WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 GREECE'S PARTICIPATION IN WORLD WAR ONE 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thousands of pages have been written 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about both the the National Schism and the epic war in Asia Minor 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which ultimately was completed with the destruction and uprooting of the Greeks in Ionia. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Since those 2 events have monopolised discussions, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the general public doesn't know much about Greece's participation in WWI. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 For reasons that we don't need to mention now, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Greece might have been late in entering 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the conflict between the Central Powers and the Entente, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 however during the short period that it participated 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it achieved an important victory 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and played an active role in the conclusion of the war 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on the Macedonian Front. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some might say that Greece was participating in this conflict indirectly before 1917 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 since on the one hand Eleftherios Venizelos with the National Defence Coup D'État 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and on the other hand the Anglo-French 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 were trying to force Greece to join the war in various ways. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Bulgarians had invaded Macedonia in 1916 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and remained there until 1918. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 During the Bulgarian occupation, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they proceeded with thousands of murders and destruction 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 along with looting important archaeological and religious treasures. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Despite the Bulgarian occupation in Macedonia starting in August 1916 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Greece eventually entered the war in June 1917 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when the French invaded Piraeus and bombed Athens 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 forcing the government to resign 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and King Konstantinos abdicated the throne and left the country. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Venizelos then returned to Athens as the prime minister 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and declared war on the Central Powers on 28 June. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 During its brief participation in the war, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Greece had a minimal participation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The first battle was against the Bulgarians on the massif of Skra di Legen 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on 30 May 1918. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Four months later, in September, Greek forces also participate 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the final assault and dissolution of the enemy on the Macedonian front in the Battle of Doirani. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Doirani is a lake which today is split between the borders of Greece and Skopje. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Greek Army had a small contribution to the Entente's victory. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 However, it was enough for Greece to sit at the table on the winning side 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and assert territorial gains. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now let's go back to the battles though. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In May 1916, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Bulgarians took Fort Roupel without a fight, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and went all the way to Skra 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where they occasionally skirmished with the Anglo-French troops. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Entente wanted to stop the Bulgarians from sending troops westward 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to reinforce the Germans on other fronts. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Therefore it kept them confined there, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 blocking off the pass from the Skra massif. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 On the other hand, now that Greece had entered the war, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it wanted to occupy these areas, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which the Bulgarians had previously occupied. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 French army general Guillaumat 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 decided that the fortified area of Skra had to be occupied. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Greek National Defence army corps undertook carrying out this mission 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 under lieutenant general Emmanouil Zymvrakakis. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The task force was under the command of major general Ioannou. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Greek forces were made up of 14,500 infantrymen 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who were supported by 287 heavy and light artillery. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Bulgarians on the other hand 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 had 5 infantry regiments 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 supported by powerful artillery, both heavy and light. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Greek troops in the battle, are shown on the map: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the 5th and 6th regiment of the Archipelago division, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the 7th and 8th regiment of the Cretan division, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the 1st regiment of the Serres division. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Greeks were also supported by a French division. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The offensive began at 5 in the morning on 16 May. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 By the afternoon of the 17th, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Greeks occupied Skra. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Bulgarians resisted fiercely 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 resulting in casualties being high for the Greek troops as well. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Casualties reached 434 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 while the injured reached 1925. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Not only did the Bulgarians suffer hundreds of casualties, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but 2000 of them were also taken captive. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "FALLEN IN BATTLE 1916-1918 CYPRIOT VOLUNTEERS PVT APOSTOLOU K. APOS. PVT KATSARIS CHR. GRIG. PVT IKONOMIDIS LEON. PVT IKONOMIDIS I. CHRYS. PVT PAPACHRISTODOULOU A. D. " 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That was the first and last epic battle of the Greek Army in WWI. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A second battle is fought a few months later, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in September 1918. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The Battle of Doirani is fought between 18-19 September. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The British cooperated with the Greek Army 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and attacked the Bulgarian forces near Lake Doirani. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 On the one side were the Bulgarians with 45,000 troops. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 On the other side was the British 22nd division 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 supported by the Greek Serres and Cretan divisions, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 amounting to a total of 75,000 soldiers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The battles lasted for 2 days, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 during which the upper hand was constantly changing between both sides. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Eventually the Bulgarians won a tactical victory 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which is evident from the number of casualties. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The British and Greeks had 6,500-7,000 casualties 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 while the Bulgarians had only suffered 2,700. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Three days before the Battle of Doirani, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on 15 September, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Serbs and French had defeated the Bularians and Germans 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at the Battle of Dobro Pole, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in modern day Skopje. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The allied army constantly headed towards Bulgaria. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 After this defeat, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a riot broke out in the Bulgarian camp 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they signed a truce and surrendered. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This caused the Bulgarians in Doirani to withdraw 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the Greeks and British occupied the regions of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Only the British Royal Air Force attacked the columns of retreating Bulgarians. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Resulting in the Bulgarians suffering casualties. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This formally ended the battles on the Macedonian Front. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Greece was one of the countries with the smallest military losses 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 since it entered the war quite late. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Casualties amounted to a total of 27,000 men on the battlefields 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 more specifically: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 6,000 dead and missing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and 21,000 injured. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 However difficulties hadn't started for the Greek Army yet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 After constant wars: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 2 Balkan Wars and a World War, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it was called to carry out another feat, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the one on the Asia Minor Front, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which was Greece's opportunity to fulfill the dream of Great Greece. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 A dream that would prove to be a nightmare 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for the Greek population and for the other Christian populations in Asia Minor. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Cognosco Team We thank you for watching us.
