9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Hi, my name is Alastair Cole. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm a documentary film maker [br]based here in Scotland, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it's a pleasure to be here today 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to celebrate[br]International Translation Day 2017, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and to talk to you about Amara as well, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which is, of course, a wonderful platform[br]for subtitling and translation. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 As part of my role as a filmmaker, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 subtitling and translation[br]is such a pivotal part to what I do. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Specially at the moment,[br]the film I'm making is about languages, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the subject of language, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 including a recent project,[br]a feature documentary, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "The Colors of the Alphabet". 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which I'm going to talk[br]a little bit about now, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 why translation and subtitling[br]have been so pivotal and so fundamental 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to how this film is made. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Those who were with me in it, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 without them I wouldn't have been able[br]to made this film. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The film is a feature documentary, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it released last year[br]at the Glasglow Festival, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it's been turned around[br]festivals and cinemas 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the UK, Europe and Africa,[br]since then. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's the story of three children[br]in a village in Zambia, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in a village called [ ] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's a story of language and politics[br]in education, if you want, and childhood. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It follows the children for 12 months[br]at their first year of school. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And there's a school in the community, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where the community speaks one language[br]- [ ] - 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the region and the teacher speak[br]another language, called [ ], 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and they all learn English, because[br]English is the official language of Zambia
