platform[br]for subtitling and translation. 0:00:16.091,0:00:18.120 As part of my role as a filmmaker, 0:00:18.120,0:00:21.905 subtitling and translation[br]is such a pivotal part to what I do. 0:00:21.905,0:00:24.400 Specially as I make films,[br]and at the moment, 0:00:24.400,0:00:27.469 I'm making a film about languages,[br]about the subject of language, 0:00:27.469,0:00:30.301 including a recent project,[br]a feature documentary project 0:00:30.301,0:00:32.164 called, "The Colours of the Alphabet", 0:00:32.164,0:00:34.063 which I'm going to talk[br]a little bit about now, 0:00:34.063,0:00:37.362 because subtitling and translation[br]have been so pivotal and so fundamental 0:00:37.362,0:00:39.597 to how this film is made. 0:00:39.597,0:00:42.611 Those in it, those with me on it, 0:00:42.611,0:00:46.342 without them I wouldn't be able[br]to have made the film. 0:00:46.342,0:00:48.581 The film is a feature documentary, 0:00:48.581,0:00:50.685 it released last year[br]at the Glasglow Film Festival, 0:00:50.685,0:00:53.564 and it's been turned around[br]festivals and cinemas around the UK, 0:00:53.564,0:00:56.493 and in Europe and Africa, since then. 0:00:56.493,0:00:59.665 It's the story of three children[br]in a village in Zambia, 0:00:59.665,0:01:00.940 in a village called Lwimba. 0:01:00.940,0:01:06.039 It's a story of language and politics[br]in education, if you want, and childhood. 0:01:06.039,0:01:09.852 It follows the children for 12 months[br]at their first year of school. 0:01:09.852,0:01:11.424 And there's a school in the community, 0:01:11.424,0:01:14.061 where the community speaks[br]one language, called Soli, 0:01:14.061,0:01:16.871 the region and the teacher speak[br]another language, called Nyanja, 0:01:16.871,0:01:18.196 and they all must learn English, 0:01:18.196,0:01:20.542 because English is the only [br]official language of Zambia, 0:01:20.542,0:01:24.456 despite there being[br]72 different languages, 0:01:24.456,0:01:28.020 and only less than 2% of the population[br]speak English at home. 0:01:28.020,0:01:30.863 So, of course, it's a film about[br]this political dynamic, 0:01:30.863,0:01:33.632 but at the same time, it's a film[br]about childhood, and it's funny, 0:01:33.632,0:01:37.557 and it'a film that, hopefully,[br]we can all relate to at times, 0:01:37.557,0:01:40.250 and it reminds us of those days[br]at school and their difficulties, 0:01:40.250,0:01:41.337 but of course, 0:01:41.337,0:01:44.781 for someone that is going to school[br]in a different language completely, 0:01:44.781,0:01:50.405 these difficulties are really highlighted[br]and exasperated, if you want. 0:01:51.285,0:01:54.681 But within the filmmaking process,[br]subtitling and translation is fundamental. 0:01:54.681,0:01:57.244 We used multicolored subtitles in the film 0:01:57.244,0:02:00.353 to represent the changes [br]in the different languages 0:02:00.353,0:02:03.166 that are going on in the classroom,[br]and in somewhere like Zambia. 0:02:03.166,0:02:06.320 This multilingualism is incredible,[br]it's very impressive, but of course, 0:02:06.320,0:02:11.983 conveying it to a non-indigenous[br]African-language-speaking-audience 0:02:11.983,0:02:15.115 is often difficult, and it's often[br]not taken as a priority. 0:02:15.115,0:02:16.472 But for us it was a priority, 0:02:16.472,0:02:20.130 so we used a creative approach [br]to subtitling, if you want, in the film, 0:02:20.130,0:02:22.814 that you can see in the teaser[br]at the end of this video. 0:02:23.644,0:02:26.329 Soli, one of the languages, is orange,[br]has orange subtitling, 0:02:26.329,0:02:29.406 Nyanja has green subtitling,[br]Bemba has pink subtitling, 0:02:29.406,0:02:31.611 and English has white subtitling. 0:02:31.611,0:02:35.596 And this technique has been able to foster[br]more conversation, and hopefully, 0:02:35.596,0:02:39.169 a greater understanding[br]about this multilingualism that exists, 0:02:39.169,0:02:43.164 this beautiful multilingualism that exists[br]and the complexities and the skills, 0:02:43.164,0:02:47.776 which so many people [br]across the continent embrace this. 0:02:48.047,0:02:50.658 And I suppose, [br]within the documentary more broadly, 0:02:50.658,0:02:52.879 subtitling and translation [br]is so important, and my team -- 0:02:52.879,0:02:55.666 and is my team for this film[br]that I talk about. 0:02:55.666,0:02:58.758 My team of subtitlers [br]and translators in Zambia, 0:02:58.758,0:03:04.009 Suwilanji Ngambi, Peter Lupiya,[br]and Brighton Lubasi were so important, 0:03:04.009,0:03:06.309 and without them [br]I wouldn't be able to make the film. 0:03:06.309,0:03:10.863 And also my team in the UK,[br]Elena Zini and those in Screen Language, 0:03:10.863,0:03:14.142 who helped to bring the film[br]to international audiences, 0:03:14.142,0:03:16.639 and creating[br]foreign language versions of the film. 0:03:16.979,0:03:21.455 But more generally, [br]a documentary film having translation 0:03:21.455,0:03:23.885 and translators that work seriously[br]on approaching it, 0:03:23.885,0:03:26.196 to understand the importance[br]of representing someone, 0:03:26.196,0:03:28.754 and that language can be misconstrued, 0:03:28.754,0:03:32.122 and a message stands a translation [br]isn't taken seriously, is so important. 0:03:32.742,0:03:35.482 I think documentary filmmaking[br]provides a specific case, sometimes, 0:03:35.482,0:03:40.110 because people and the film[br]that an audience can see and hear 0:03:40.110,0:03:42.468 are real people before and after the film, 0:03:42.468,0:03:46.262 and so, their accurate representation[br]is so important, 0:03:46.262,0:03:49.492 and their understanding of them[br]as people is so important. 0:03:49.492,0:03:54.853 I think translation and subtitling[br]can do a wonderful job there 0:03:54.853,0:03:58.030 to help audiences around the world 0:03:58.030,0:04:02.777 experience different languages [br]and cultures, but also, at the same time, of the Alphabet", 0:04:08.665,0:04:12.191 but the release of [br]"The Colours of the Alphabet" 0:04:12.191,0:04:16.682 in early next year across Africa, 0:04:16.682,0:04:19.410 where it'll be broadcasted into [br]49 different countries with Afridocs. 0:04:19.410,0:04:22.607 And as part of the broadcast[br]we're working with Amara 0:04:22.607,0:04:24.528 to create 25 indigenous language[br]versions of the film. 0:04:24.528,0:04:27.291 It's a really exciting project for us 0:04:27.291,0:04:28.739 because, of course, [br]we want the film to travel across Africa, 0:04:28.739,0:04:31.754 is where the film is made, 0:04:31.754,0:04:33.000 is where, hopefully, [br]the film speaks to a lot of audiences. 0:04:33.000,0:04:37.646 But, at the same time, 0:04:37.646,0:04:38.792 it's important that the film[br]is seen in the languages of the audience, 0:04:38.792,0:04:41.815 that is the [end goal] of the film, 0:04:41.815,0:04:43.910 but we also want
