celebrate 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 International Translation Day 2017, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and to talk to you about Amara as well, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which is, of course, a wonderful platform[br]for subtitling and translation. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 As part of my role as a filmmaker, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 subtitling and translation[br]is such a pivotal part to what I do. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Specially as I make films,[br]and at the moment, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm making a film about languages,[br]about the subject of language, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 including a recent project,[br]a feature documentary project 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 called, "The Colours of the Alphabet", 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which I'm going to talk[br]a little bit about now, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because subtitling and translation[br]have been so pivotal and so fundamental 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to how this film is made. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Those in it, those with me on it, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 without them I wouldn't be able[br]to have made the film. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The film is a feature documentary, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it released last year[br]at the Glasglow Festival, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it's been turned around[br]festivals and cinemas around the UK, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and in Europe and Africa, since then. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's the story of three children[br]in a village in Zambia, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in a village called Lwimba. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's a story of language and politics[br]in education, if you want, and childhood. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It follows the children for 12 months[br]at their first year of school. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And there's a school in the community, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where the community speaks[br]one language, called Soli, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the region and the teacher speak[br]another language, called Nyanja, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and they all must learn English, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because English is the only [br]official language of Zambia, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 despite there being[br]72 different languages, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and only less than 2% of the population[br]speak English at home. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, of course, it's a film about[br]this political dynamic, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but at the same time, it's a film[br]about childhood, and it's funny, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it'a film that, hopefully,[br]we can all relate to at times, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it reminds us of those days[br]at school and their difficulties, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but of course, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for someone that is going to school[br]in a different language completely, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 these difficulties are really highlighted[br]and exasperated, if you want. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But within the filmmaking process,[br]subtitling and translation is fundamental. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We used multicolored subtitles in the film 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to represent the changes [br]in the different languages 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that are going on in the classroom,[br]and somewhere like Zambia. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This multilingualism is incredible,[br]it's very impressive, but of course, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 conveying it to a non-indigenous[br]African-language-speaking-audience 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is often difficult, [br]and it's often not taken as a priority. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But for us it was a priority, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so we used a creative approach [br]to subtitling, if you want, in the film, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that you can see in the teaser[br]at the end of this video. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Soli, one of the languages, is orange,[br]has orange subtitling, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Nyanja has green subtitling,[br]Bemba has pink subtitling, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and English has white subtitling. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And this technique has been able to foster[br]more conversation, and hopefully, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a greater understanding[br]about this multilingualism that exists, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this beautiful multilingualism that exists[br]and the complexities and the skills, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which so many people across the continent[br]embrace this. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I suppose, [br]within the documentary more broadly, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 subtitling and translation [br]is so important, and my team -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and my team for this film[br]is what I talk about. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 My team of subtitlers [br]and translators in Zambia, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Suwilanji Ngambi, Peter Lupiya,[br]and Brighton Lubasi were so important, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and without them [br]I wouldn't be able to make the film. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And also my team in the UK,[br]Elena Zini and those in Screen Language, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who helped to bring the film[br]to international audiences, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and creating [br]foreign language versions of the film. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But more generally, [br]a documentary film having translation 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and translators that work seriously[br]to approach it, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to understand the importance[br]of representing someone, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and that language can be misconstrued, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and a message stands a translation [br]is taken seriously is so important. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think documentary filmmaking[br]provides a specific case sometimes, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because people and the film[br]that an audience can see and hear 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 are real people before and after the film, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so their accurate representation[br]is so important, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and their understanding of them[br]as people is so important. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think translation and subtitling[br]can do a wonderful job there 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to help audiences around the world 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 experience different languages [br]and cultures, but also, at the same time, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 understand people[br]in the best way possible. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I also want to mention a new project[br]that we're working on 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 around "The Colours of the Alphabet", 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but the release of [br]"The Colours of the Alphabet" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in early next year across Africa, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where it'll be broadcasted into [br]49 different countries with Afridocs. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And as part of the broadcast[br]we're working with Amara 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to create 25 indigenous language[br]versions of the film. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's a really exciting project for us 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because, of course, [br]we want the film to travel across Africa, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is where the film is made, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is where, hopefully, [br]the film speaks to a lot of audiences. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But, at the same time, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it's important that the film[br]is seen in the languages of the audience, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that is the [ ] of the film, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but we also want people to be able[br]to understand it in their terms. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, we're going to be working[br]in the next months 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with indigenous subtitlers and translators 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to create 25 different language versions. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We're going to be offering them [br]the opportunity to train and work with us, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and at the end of the day, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for people to help to translate [br]and subtitle this film, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and hopefully, foster what could be 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 one of the
