Located in the Atlantic Ocean,
Fernando de Noronha
is a Brazilian archipelago
in the state of Pernambuco.
Sighted for the first time
between 1500 and 1502,
its discovery is attributed
to an expedition led by
the explorer Fernão de Noronha,
although there are controversies.
However, it is certain that the first
to describe it was Americo Vespucci
on an expedition carried out
between 1503 and 1504.
In today's video: Ten incredible facts
about Fernando de Noronha.

A Prison In Paradise
1
Fernando de Noronha was once a prison.
Imagine being detained
in a place like this.
As soon as the Portuguese
took over the Island,
they ordered the construction of 10 forts,
preventing disembarkation
in any part of the island.
The prisoners were sent
in droves to Noronha,
where many remained.
The prison was built in 1737
and was only deactivated 200 years later,
with Brazil entering
the Second World War.
This was when Noronha ended up
becoming a base for the National Defense.
No Babies Are Born In Noronha
2
The birth of children
is prohibited in the archipelago.
Therefore,
in the seventh month of pregnancy,
all pregnant women
are forced to leave their homes,
their families, and loved ones
to finish their pregnancy in Recife.
The government pays for tickets,
accommodation, and three meals a day
for the pregnant woman
and a companion until the baby is born.
Wedding Under The Sea
3
Fernando de Noronha is one of the
best destinations in the world
for practicing diving,
which has also served
as a wedding venue.
In 1991,
an American couple got married
at the bottom of the sea,
in Ponta da Sapata.
In 2017,
a couple from Fernando de Noronha
got married in the Sapata cave,
at sixteen meters deep.

The Most Expensive Gasoline In Brazil
5
Fernando de Noronha
has only one gas station.
There you will find the most
expensive gasoline in our country.
The price can be up to fifty percent
higher than in Recife, the capital.
Ridesharing
6
Although the island is quite small,
walking there can be quite tiring.
Mainly because
Noronha is hot all year round,
not to mention the price of gas.
In case you are tired of walking
and want to get a ride, sure thing
just use your thumb
and, if not the first,
the second motorized person will stop.
This is because ridesharing
is very common and costumery in Noronha.
Traveling Turtles
7
Fernando de Noronha is one of the largest
sea turtle
preservation sanctuaries in Brazil.
The archipelago has one of
the most crystal-clear seas on the planet.
The water is so clear
that it is possible to see marine life
more than 40 meters deep.
Shortest Highway in Brazil
8
BR-363 is the smallest
highway in our country.
And despite being only 7 km long,
it is extremely important for the Island,
being today the main road
for tourists and residents.
Some Beaches Close At 6pm
9
After 6pm, many beaches
in Fernando de Noronha are closed.
This happens to protect sea turtles,
which arrive on the sands
to lay their eggs shortly after sunset.
Perfect Weather
10
The natives say that
Noronha has two seasons.
A dry season from August to February,
and a rainy season from March to July.
But being in the rainy season
doesn't mean it will rain every day.
It rains sporadically,
and even during this period
you enjoy good sunny days.
The average temperature is 28ºC.
