9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Good Morning 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Worldwide, over 1.5 Billion People experience some conflict 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In response, people are forced to flee their country. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 leaving over 15 million refugees. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 children without a doubt are 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the most innocent and vulnerable victims 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but not just from the obvious physical dangers, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but from, the often, unspoken affects that wars have on their families. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The experiences of war leave children at real high risk 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for the development of emotional and behavioural problems. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 children as we can only imagine, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 will feel worried, threaten and at risk. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but there is good news. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The Quality of care that children recieve 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in their families, can have a more significant 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 effects on their well-being, than from 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the actual experiences of war that they have been exposed to. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So actually, children can be protected 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 by warm, secure parenting. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 during and after conflict. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In 2011 I was a first year PHD Student 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the University Of Manchester 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 School Of Physiological Sciences. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Like many of you here, I watched the crisis in Syria 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 unfold in front of me on the Tv. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 My family are originally from Syria, and very early on 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I lost several family members in really horrifying ways. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I sit and I gathered with my family to watch the Tv. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So we have all seen those scenes, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 barns destroying, buildings, chaos, destruction. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and people screaming and running. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it was always the people screaming and running 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that really got me the most. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Specially those terrified looking children. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I was a mother to two young, typically inquisitive children. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They were five and six then. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 At an age when they typically ask lots and lots of questions 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and expect real convincing answers. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So I began to wonder what it might be like 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to parent my children in a war-zone and a refugee camp. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Would my children change? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Would my daughter's bright happy eyes lose their shine? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 would my sons' really relax care-free nature 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 become fearful and withdrawn? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 How would I cope? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Would I change? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 As psychologists and parent's trainers 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we know that arming parents 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with skills and caring for their children 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 can have a huge effect on their well-being. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We call this Parents Training. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The questions I had was 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Could Parent Training programs be useful for families 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 while they're still in war-zones or refugee camps? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Could we reach them with advise or training 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that would help them through the struggles? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, I approached my PHD supervisor, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 professor Rachel Calam, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with my idea of using my academic skills 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to make some changes in the real world. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I wasn't quite sure, exactly, what I wanted to do. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 She listened carefully and patiently, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And to my joy, she said: 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "If that is what you want to do, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it means so much to you, Let's do it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Let's find ways to see if parent programs can be useful 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for families in this contexts." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So for the past five years myself and my colleagues, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 professor Calam and Dr. Kim Cartwright 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 have been working on ways to support families 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that have experienced war and displacement. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now, to know how to help families that have been 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 through conflict, support their children, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the first step must obviously be 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to ask them what are they struggling with. Right? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I mean, it seems obvious, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but often those are the most vulnerable 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that we are trying to support that we actually don't ask. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 How many times have we just assumed 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we know exactly the right thing that is gonna help 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 someone or something without actually asking 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 them first.
