WEBVTT 00:00:03.399 --> 00:00:08.099 Hello, and welcome back to another episode of Make Thrift Buy, the show where I... 00:00:08.099 --> 00:00:10.980 have a cold. BUT also, you send me pictures of clothes 00:00:10.980 --> 00:00:14.389 that you've found on the internet, and I try my best to recreate them! 00:00:14.389 --> 00:00:18.690 Today's challenge was suggested by the lovely ada_oline, who wanted me to try out this silvery 00:00:18.690 --> 00:00:24.070 drawstring bag. I found this bag on a couple of different sites, including some Etsy stores, 00:00:24.070 --> 00:00:27.779 Ebay... I basically found this bag everywhere. 00:00:27.780 --> 00:00:29.320 Drawstring bags are pretty simple. 00:00:29.330 --> 00:00:30.830 So, we'll get started! 00:00:30.830 --> 00:00:35.690 The special materials I needed for this project were some silver fabric, an eyelet or grommet 00:00:35.690 --> 00:00:39.590 kit with tools, and approximately 74 inches of rope. 00:00:39.590 --> 00:00:44.390 I started out by cutting out my bag material. To do this, I folded my silver material in 00:00:44.390 --> 00:00:49.230 half, right-sides together, and on the wrong-side of the fabric, I drew a rectangle that was 00:00:49.230 --> 00:00:50.710 13 by 17 inches. 00:00:51.940 --> 00:00:55.460 I then put some pins through both pieces of fabric to hold them together, 00:00:55.460 --> 00:00:59.570 then cut out the rectangle, making sure to cut through both pieces of fabric. By folding 00:00:59.570 --> 00:01:04.610 my material in half before cutting, I’ve saved time by cutting out both pieces at once. 00:01:04.610 --> 00:01:09.220 Then, I leave the pins in the material, and I sew around the edges of the bag like this. 00:01:09.220 --> 00:01:14.560 I make sure to leave 2 inches not sewn up the top here, and I also don’t sew the top edge. 00:01:15.340 --> 00:01:20.790 I’m using an overlocker to sew - because it’s fast and I’m lazy - but you can definitely 00:01:20.790 --> 00:01:25.409 also just use a normal straight stitch on a sewing machine, or even hand-sew this with 00:01:25.409 --> 00:01:28.300 a needle and thread. 00:01:28.300 --> 00:01:32.500 When you’re done, your two rectangles should be sewed together, right-sides together, like 00:01:32.510 --> 00:01:36.080 this. And I know you can’t see my stitches here because I was using light-coloured thread, 00:01:36.080 --> 00:01:38.570 but they *are* there, and they look like this. 00:01:38.570 --> 00:01:43.760 Next, I folded down this top, unsewn edge, by ONE inch, like this. 00:01:43.760 --> 00:01:50.750 And then I pinned this edge down all the way around the top of the bag, so that I had this. 00:01:50.750 --> 00:01:54.960 And then I sewed all the way around the bag, to create a kind of tube on both the front 00:01:54.960 --> 00:02:00.820 and back sides of the bag, like this. 00:02:00.820 --> 00:02:04.479 When you get to the side seam of your bag, you should stop sewing, lift up your needle 00:02:04.479 --> 00:02:09.200 and cut the threads, and start again on the other side of the seam, so that you get two 00:02:09.200 --> 00:02:12.420 tubes, one of the front and one on the back of the bag. 00:02:12.420 --> 00:02:16.889 When I was done sewing, I turned my bag the right way around! And, I also pushed out the 00:02:16.889 --> 00:02:18.829 corners of the bag using a ruler. 00:02:18.829 --> 00:02:24.810 Then, on the two bottom corners, I sewed over the top of each corner like this. Just make 00:02:24.810 --> 00:02:29.019 sure that this corner is big enough for your eyelet to fit inside. 00:02:29.019 --> 00:02:33.870 Okay, so now it’s time to set the eyelets! Now, this is the eyelet kit that I bought. 00:02:33.870 --> 00:02:38.790 DO NOT get this brand of eyelets – which is called Sullivan’s – this kit was totally 00:02:38.790 --> 00:02:43.969 wrong and incomplete just and didn’t…. work. And also led me to ruin most of my eyelets 00:02:43.969 --> 00:02:47.569 while I was practicing, and, as you can see, my table! 00:02:47.569 --> 00:02:51.810 Anyway, I got it to work because I found an anvil and a tool that I could use in another 00:02:51.810 --> 00:02:56.680 button kit that I owned – Thanks, NEWEY – so I inserted my eyelets by making a little 00:02:56.680 --> 00:03:02.930 hole in the middle of that corner triangle, making the hole bigger using a pen, inserting 00:03:02.930 --> 00:03:07.709 this larger eyelet piece through the hole, placing the anvil underneath, then placing 00:03:07.709 --> 00:03:11.989 the washer over the top, putting this tool thingy in the middle, and then bashing the 00:03:11.989 --> 00:03:19.939 whole thing down with a hammer. Which gave me this pretty eyelet in my fabric. Hooray! 00:03:19.939 --> 00:03:22.969 I repeated this on both the bottom corners of the bag. 00:03:22.969 --> 00:03:27.739 Now it’s time to add the bag straps. So, I cut myself about 74 inches of rope. 00:03:27.739 --> 00:03:29.639 Then, I threaded the rope as follows: 00:03:29.639 --> 00:03:33.510 First, through one of the eyelets, and I tied a knot in the short end. 00:03:33.510 --> 00:03:38.999 Then, I inserted a safety pin into the other end of the rope to help guide it, and I threaded 00:03:38.999 --> 00:03:42.699 the rope through the top tube. 00:03:45.560 --> 00:03:47.900 ...and then I pulled it through until the strap on the left 00:03:47.949 --> 00:03:50.659 was about the right length for a bag. 00:03:50.659 --> 00:03:54.339 Then I threaded the rope through the BACK tube, and out the other end. 00:03:56.879 --> 00:03:59.679 And I pulled the excess rope all the way through. 00:04:04.740 --> 00:04:09.740 Then I threaded the rope, once again, through this TOP tube. So, there are two layers of 00:04:09.749 --> 00:04:13.969 rope going through the top tube now. Because of this, it can be a bit hard to get the rope 00:04:13.969 --> 00:04:18.199 in there, but keep persevering and you’ll get it there eventually. 00:04:18.200 --> 00:04:22.000 I pulled this rope all the way through, and then threaded it though the last eyelet... 00:04:25.740 --> 00:04:29.200 ...and I tied a knot in the end, and snipped off the excess rope. 00:04:33.260 --> 00:04:37.780 Then, I tried the bag on, found the rope to be a little bit too long, so I cut it shorter 00:04:37.789 --> 00:04:44.069 at the ends and re-tied the knots until both the straps were about the right length. 00:04:44.069 --> 00:04:45.289 And that’s it. 00:04:45.289 --> 00:04:46.749 So, how did I go? 00:04:46.749 --> 00:04:58.930 [music plays] 00:05:04.650 --> 00:05:10.500 So - I am *really* please with how this one turned out! And my conclusion is a definite 00:05:10.500 --> 00:05:11.900 [scissors snipping sound effect] 00:05:11.900 --> 00:05:15.090 Yeah - you can really easily make this for yourself, even if you're a beginning sewer 00:05:15.090 --> 00:05:20.680 - in fact, if you're new to sewing, I think that this is a really good project to be one 00:05:20.680 --> 00:05:23.340 of your first projects, because you don't have to sew too much, you're only ever sewing 00:05:23.340 --> 00:05:27.340 straight lines - in fact, considering how easy this is to make, it's kind of outrageous 00:05:27.340 --> 00:05:31.280 the amount that I found for it online. But, if you make this for yourself, and even 00:05:31.280 --> 00:05:33.539 if you buy all the materials new, you're not going to be spending more than $10 or $15 00:05:33.539 --> 00:05:36.400 on this. So that's it from me for today! I hope you're 00:05:36.400 --> 00:05:39.860 all having a really good day, and I'll see you all for my next video.
