0:00:03.399,0:00:08.099 Hello, and welcome back to another episode[br]of Make Thrift Buy, the show where I... 0:00:08.099,0:00:10.980 have a cold.[br]BUT also, you send me pictures of clothes 0:00:10.980,0:00:14.389 that you've found on the internet, and I try[br]my best to recreate them! 0:00:14.389,0:00:18.690 Today's challenge was suggested by the lovely[br]ada_oline, who wanted me to try out this silvery 0:00:18.690,0:00:24.070 drawstring bag. I found this bag on a couple[br]of different sites, including some Etsy stores, 0:00:24.070,0:00:27.779 Ebay... I basically found this bag everywhere. 0:00:27.780,0:00:29.320 Drawstring bags are pretty simple. 0:00:29.330,0:00:30.830 So, we'll get started! 0:00:30.830,0:00:35.690 The special materials I needed for this project[br]were some silver fabric, an eyelet or grommet 0:00:35.690,0:00:39.590 kit with tools, and approximately 74 inches[br]of rope. 0:00:39.590,0:00:44.390 I started out by cutting out my bag material.[br]To do this, I folded my silver material in 0:00:44.390,0:00:49.230 half, right-sides together, and on the wrong-side[br]of the fabric, I drew a rectangle that was 0:00:49.230,0:00:50.710 13 by 17 inches. 0:00:51.940,0:00:55.460 I then put some pins through[br]both pieces of fabric to hold them together, 0:00:55.460,0:00:59.570 then cut out the rectangle, making sure to[br]cut through both pieces of fabric. By folding 0:00:59.570,0:01:04.610 my material in half before cutting, I’ve[br]saved time by cutting out both pieces at once. 0:01:04.610,0:01:09.220 Then, I leave the pins in the material, and[br]I sew around the edges of the bag like this. 0:01:09.220,0:01:14.560 I make sure to leave 2 inches not sewn up[br]the top here, and I also don’t sew the top edge. 0:01:15.340,0:01:20.790 I’m using an overlocker to sew - because[br]it’s fast and I’m lazy - but you can definitely 0:01:20.790,0:01:25.409 also just use a normal straight stitch on[br]a sewing machine, or even hand-sew this with 0:01:25.409,0:01:28.300 a needle and thread. 0:01:28.300,0:01:32.500 When you’re done, your two rectangles should[br]be sewed together, right-sides together, like 0:01:32.510,0:01:36.080 this. And I know you can’t see my stitches[br]here because I was using light-coloured thread, 0:01:36.080,0:01:38.570 but they *are* there, and they look like this. 0:01:38.570,0:01:43.760 Next, I folded down this top, unsewn edge,[br]by ONE inch, like this. 0:01:43.760,0:01:50.750 And then I pinned this edge down all the way[br]around the top of the bag, so that I had this. 0:01:50.750,0:01:54.960 And then I sewed all the way around the bag,[br]to create a kind of tube on both the front 0:01:54.960,0:02:00.820 and back sides of the bag, like this. 0:02:00.820,0:02:04.479 When you get to the side seam of your bag,[br]you should stop sewing, lift up your needle 0:02:04.479,0:02:09.200 and cut the threads, and start again on the[br]other side of the seam, so that you get two 0:02:09.200,0:02:12.420 tubes, one of the front and one on the back[br]of the bag. 0:02:12.420,0:02:16.889 When I was done sewing, I turned my bag the[br]right way around! And, I also pushed out the 0:02:16.889,0:02:18.829 corners of the bag using a ruler. 0:02:18.829,0:02:24.810 Then, on the two bottom corners, I sewed over[br]the top of each corner like this. Just make 0:02:24.810,0:02:29.019 sure that this corner is big enough for your[br]eyelet to fit inside. 0:02:29.019,0:02:33.870 Okay, so now it’s time to set the eyelets![br]Now, this is the eyelet kit that I bought. 0:02:33.870,0:02:38.790 DO NOT get this brand of eyelets – which[br]is called Sullivan’s – this kit was totally 0:02:38.790,0:02:43.969 wrong and incomplete just and didn’t….[br]work. And also led me to ruin most of my eyelets 0:02:43.969,0:02:47.569 while I was practicing, and, as you can see,[br]my table! 0:02:47.569,0:02:51.810 Anyway, I got it to work because I found an[br]anvil and a tool that I could use in another 0:02:51.810,0:02:56.680 button kit that I owned – Thanks, NEWEY[br]– so I inserted my eyelets by making a little 0:02:56.680,0:03:02.930 hole in the middle of that corner triangle,[br]making the hole bigger using a pen, inserting 0:03:02.930,0:03:07.709 this larger eyelet piece through the hole,[br]placing the anvil underneath, then placing 0:03:07.709,0:03:11.989 the washer over the top, putting this tool[br]thingy in the middle, and then bashing the 0:03:11.989,0:03:19.939 whole thing down with a hammer. Which gave[br]me this pretty eyelet in my fabric. Hooray! 0:03:19.939,0:03:22.969 I repeated this on both the bottom corners[br]of the bag. 0:03:22.969,0:03:27.739 Now it’s time to add the bag straps. So,[br]I cut myself about 74 inches of rope. 0:03:27.739,0:03:29.639 Then, I threaded the rope as follows: 0:03:29.639,0:03:33.510 First, through one of the eyelets, and I tied[br]a knot in the short end. 0:03:33.510,0:03:38.999 Then, I inserted a safety pin into the other[br]end of the rope to help guide it, and I threaded 0:03:38.999,0:03:42.699 the rope through the top tube. 0:03:45.560,0:03:47.900 ...and then I[br]pulled it through until the strap on the left 0:03:47.949,0:03:50.659 was about the right length for a bag. 0:03:50.659,0:03:54.339 Then I threaded the rope through the BACK[br]tube, and out the other end. 0:03:56.879,0:03:59.679 And I pulled the excess rope all the way through. 0:04:04.740,0:04:09.740 Then I threaded the rope, once again, through[br]this TOP tube. So, there are two layers of 0:04:09.749,0:04:13.969 rope going through the top tube now. Because[br]of this, it can be a bit hard to get the rope 0:04:13.969,0:04:18.199 in there, but keep persevering and you’ll[br]get it there eventually. 0:04:18.200,0:04:22.000 I pulled this rope all the way through, and[br]then threaded it though the last eyelet... 0:04:25.740,0:04:29.200 ...and I tied a knot in the end, and snipped off[br]the excess rope. 0:04:33.260,0:04:37.780 Then, I tried the bag on, found the rope to[br]be a little bit too long, so I cut it shorter 0:04:37.789,0:04:44.069 at the ends and re-tied the knots until both[br]the straps were about the right length. 0:04:44.069,0:04:45.289 And that’s it. 0:04:45.289,0:04:46.749 So, how did I go? 0:04:46.749,0:04:58.930 [music plays] 0:05:04.650,0:05:10.500 So - I am *really* please with how this one[br]turned out! And my conclusion is a definite 0:05:10.500,0:05:11.900 [scissors snipping sound effect] 0:05:11.900,0:05:15.090 Yeah - you can really easily make this for[br]yourself, even if you're a beginning sewer 0:05:15.090,0:05:20.680 - in fact, if you're new to sewing, I think[br]that this is a really good project to be one 0:05:20.680,0:05:23.340 of your first projects, because you don't[br]have to sew too much, you're only ever sewing 0:05:23.340,0:05:27.340 straight lines - in fact, considering how[br]easy this is to make, it's kind of outrageous 0:05:27.340,0:05:31.280 the amount that I found for it online.[br]But, if you make this for yourself, and even 0:05:31.280,0:05:33.539 if you buy all the materials new, you're not[br]going to be spending more than $10 or $15 0:05:33.539,0:05:36.400 on this.[br]So that's it from me for today! I hope you're 0:05:36.400,0:05:39.860 all having a really good day, and I'll see[br]you all for my next video.
