Yeah, I think I got that right. 20 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And then there are two senses that most people haven't heard of. 21 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And that is the Proprioception Sense and the Vestibular Sense. 22 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Proprioceptive Sense is the sense of where your body is in space. 23 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 It allows for you to know where your limbs are, how much force you're 24 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 exerting on things. 25 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And also, where you are spatially in your environment, and how to interact 26 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 with objects in your environment. 27 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 The Vestibular Sense is the sense that is all about motion and movement. 28 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 It is a sense that tells you if you are in motion or standing still. 29 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 If you are up or down, swinging, spinning, upside down, 30 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 all of that is informed by the Vestibular Sense. 31 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 So, as I'm sure you can imagine, when a person is under or over sensitive 32 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 to any of the sensory input they may receive from their environment, 33 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 their experience is going to be a lot different than a typical person's. 34 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And their life is going to be very different because of the things they 35 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 have to deal with. 36 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 For example, a child who is undersensitive to proprioceptive input may have trouble 37 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 knowing where his body is in space, he may have trouble knowing how much 38 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 pressure to exert on things. 39 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 So he may either be too gentle, and be consistently dropping small objects. 40 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Or, he may be too rough in play, and be constantly seeking out really rough 41 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 activities to give him a lot of deep pressure input on his joints. 42 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Like wrestling, jumping around, jumping on a trampoline. 43 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 A person with sensory integration issues who is very sensitive to noise may have 44 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 a lot of trouble with auditory processing issues when they're in a space where there 45 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 is background music or a lot of people talking, like in a restaurant. 46 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 So while they can hear the person who is sitting across from them and speaking, 47 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 they may not be able to interpret what the person is saying. 48 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 They know they're speaking, their brain just can't filter out all of the auditory 49 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 information. 50 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 So like I said, sensory processing issues can encompass and incorporate all of the 51 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 senses. And everybody who has sensory integration 52 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 issues, autistic or non-autistic will have their own set of triggers, 53 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 negative sensory input that causes them discomfort or pain. 54 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And many people who have sensory integration issues, will have 55 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 some sensory input that they actively seek out and they crave, often because they are 56 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 undersensitive to it. 57 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 So, an autistic person who seeks out Vestibular input because they are 58 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 under-sensitive to vestibular input may really enjoy activities like 59 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 swinging on a swing, or spinning on a tire swing, or on a computer chair. 60 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Something that comes up a lot, and I get questions about this a lot, comes down to 61 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Sensory Defensiveness and food. 62 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Many autistic people have a very limited diet.
