Hello, this is View from Point of View Channel.
With this background,
you must realize that I'm in the field again.
Welcome to another episode of View on Tour!
[Birds chirp]
Today, we visit Ayutthaya province once more.
We are now at 'Samana Kot'
or Wat Samana Kottharam.
This temple is very important, but people don't know about it.
Want to know why it's important?
Let's hear it!
If you want to know why it's important,
you must not look at the present's name.
Not 'Samana Kot' or 'Wat Samana Kottharam'
or whatever
We must look at the nickname that were known widely in Ayutthaya period.
Back then, this temple was called
'Wat Phraya Phra Klang'
Phraya Phra Klang should be a familiar position name.
Actually, this temple is very important
becayse it's as old as the early Ayutthaya period.
In that era, there's a history that
this temple was built, present in many records.
Some parts said that
the father of Uthong, the founder of Krungsri Ayutthayam,
was once a monk of this temple.
But, this temple has regained its popularity.
As you see, all the arts
are from the middle Ayutthaya period.
It's because somebody important has restored this temple.
That is, Kosa Pan and Kosa Lek.
They went to a battle in Chiang Mai, and after they returned,
they restored this temple. That's why this temple is called
their family's temple.
And therefore the nickname,
Wat Phraya Klang [their positions].
Samana Kot or Wat Samana Kottharam
is believed to be built even before the Ayutthaya period.
In the northern records,
there is a story about a king
who was once monk of this temple.
After comparing the year and the era, they concluded that
this king must be the father of Ramathibodi I
or Uthong, the first king of Krungsri Ayutthaya.
Of course,
having the father of the king as monk here, this temple must have been super important.
From the late Ayutthaya period, there was Kaempfer record.
It's a record made by Engelbert Kaempfer, a german doctor
of the Honourable East India Company.
He has written beautifully
that there are two temples in Ayutthaya that's interesting,
that is, Chedi Phukhao Thong, and this temple.
If you travel here, besides the temple,
you will find many important things,
although this temple is not well-known.
Here, let's take a look.
If you walk through the chapel's front gate,
you'll find this thing right here.
There are two shrines with Buddha statue in the middle.
It's the shrine for Kosa Pan and Kosa Lek.
You can pay respect here.
These shrines have the big Buddha statue in between.
You can come visit anytime.
However, this temple is even more important than this.
Actually, behind the temple has another interesting thing.
Let me take you there.
This is another interesting spot of the temple,
the statue of King Taksin.
It's because this temple once received him
as a monk back in Ayutthaya period.
When he ordained, he was living in this temple.
After being a monk for a while,
he left the monkhood to work in the court.
That's why this place
has the statue of him. You can come and pay respect.
This temple is another important place
in Ayutthaya that many don't know about.
You can visit some time, because this temple
is next to Wat Kudi Dao, where the TV show 'Pitsawat' was shot.
It's also near Wat Maheyong,
the temple built by the ladies in the court.
It's also beautiful and worth a visit.
