9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, thank you everyone to coming to[br]this talk. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Are you ready to start? Yeah, fabulous. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We've called it "That's a Free Software[br]Issue!" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Cause it is! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A little bit about us. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 My name is Karen Sandler, I'm the executive[br]director of an organization named 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Software Freedom Conservancy. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Raise your hand if you've heard of[br]Conservancy 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so, like 3/4 of the room. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We're a nonprofit charity, we're the home[br]of lots of free software projects 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 like garbled,[br]the list goes on and on. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We're also the home of the Debian Copyright[br]Aggregation project, and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we're the home of Outreachy, which is a[br]diversity initiative that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Debian participates in and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the very shortest note about me is that[br]I have a heart condition and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm fine, but my heart is 3 times the size[br]of a normal person's heart 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I'm at a very high risk of suddenly[br]dying, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so I have a pacemaker defibrillator,[br]which is awesome, except 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I can't see the source code in my own[br]body, which is causing me to be 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 really really passionate about software[br]freedom. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Karen might be a cyborg, but I'm a cat[br]owner, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this is a picture of my cat, his name is[br]Bash. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 My name is Molly de Blanc, I'm a free[br]software activist, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm the campaign manager for the Free[br]Software Foundation. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 How many people here know about the FSF? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Wow! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 How many of you are members? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Still good! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Can we ask them how many are[br]Conservancy supporters? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 How many of you are Conservancy[br]supporters? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Nice 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 How many of you are both? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Thanks! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If anyone, since I'm a volunteer with the[br]Free Software Foundation, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm also a lawyer and I only do pro bono[br]legal work now. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But since I'm a volunteer sometimes with[br]the Free Software Foundation, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I can say that if anyone signs up to become[br]a Free Software Foundation associate member 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 during this talk, come up afterwards and[br]highfive me. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I can say, since I volunteer for the[br]Conservancy, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that if you would like to become a[br]Conservancy supporter by the end 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of this presentation, I will highfive you. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, in addition to those things, I'm also[br]on the board of the Open Source Initiative 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I like to think this makes me doubly[br]qualified to talk about licensing 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 even though I'm less qualified than Karen[br]to talk about licensing. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You are also affiliated with all of[br]the orgs. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Yeah. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Officially, so… 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Which brings us to[br]"What is user freedom?" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Raise you hand if this is, maybe, your[br]first conference 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in Free and Open Source Software. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Let's give all these people a round of[br]applause there, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 like 5 people here who are new. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Applause] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Brief introduction, do you want to[br]start that? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Sure 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 User freedom is predicated, it's based[br]on the idea 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we first need to understand and appreciate[br]that we have digital rights. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We're extending our rights that exist in[br]physical spaces to digital spaces. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And once we understand that, we can then[br]think about and talk about 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Well, there is this software and these[br]technologies that we're using 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we also have rights specifically[br]relevant to those" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So user freedom is the freedom that we[br]have relating to technology and software. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 User freedom is a really important part[br]of our digital right, it's… 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the slide is not… oh there it is 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Oops, now I have gone too far. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Software freedom is an important piece of[br]user freedom. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 User freedom, I think, it's very difficult[br]for user freedom to exist 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 without software freedom. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, software freedom, should I just…[br]Yeah. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Software freedom is a software that[br]you can… 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I love this picture, ???[br]for the FSF 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You can buy this on a t-shirt[br]from them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But it's software with 4 freedoms. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The ability to run a software, to make[br]modifications to the software, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to contribute back those changes and to[br]share the software generally. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There's different licenses that help[br]accomplish this. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Free and Open Source Software is[br]predicated on a legal construct 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and there's this really special idea called[br]Copyleft where 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we use copyright, which creates effectively[br]a monopoly, but in order to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 keep software free and to share it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This was kind of a crash course on[br]what Free Software is and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 what Free Software Freedom is and how[br]it fits in the context of user freedom. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Did you want to add anything to that?[br]No, it's okay. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now we want to tell you about why we care[br]about Free Software. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We mostly care because we care about[br]the future of our technology and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we care about how technology is interwoven[br]into the societies that we live in. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 For me, the reason why I care about[br]sofware freedom is deeply personal, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I have this defibrillator, I can't see the[br]source code inside my body 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but also, I can't modify it and I can't[br]change it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When I was pregnant, I got shocked by[br]my defibrillator 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because my heart was palpitating, which is[br]something that normal people who are pregnant 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 have palpitations, but the vast majority,[br]85% of people who have defibrillators 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 are over the age of 65. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And of the people who get defibrillators,[br]fewer than half of them are women, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so the set of people who are in my situation 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 being pregnant with a defibrillator was[br]just teeny tiny 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and no one had anticipated my condition[br]before. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But I couldn't do anything about[br]that situation, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the only way I could deal with it was[br]to take drugs to slow my heartrate down 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and that was a real challenge. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 As I live with my defibrillator, the issues[br]around software freedom become 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 really evident 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and as I go through different stages[br]in my life, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it becomes more and more obvious[br]how those map into societal issues. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, for me, this just comes up over[br]and over again as a metaphor 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for all of the technology we rely on. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I care about Free Software from a high[br]level. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is a reinterpretation from a quote[br]given to me by Elana Hashman 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "User freedom enables consent" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In order to consent, we have to have[br]autonomy, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and in order to have autonomy, we need[br]to be able to understand 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 what we're looking at and what we're[br]talking about. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So without user freedom, without software[br]freedom, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we wouldn't be able to look at these[br]technologies that are running 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 every single aspect of our lives. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So the question is, why should you care[br]about software freedom? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We were thinking about it and we were[br]able to divide 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 what we think are the core issues into[br]a few major categories. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The first one is autonomy. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Linking back to my heart condition, not[br]being able to even see the source code 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on my own body, let alone have the ability[br]to work with medical professionals 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to modify it really underscores this point. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We should have control over the[br]technology we rely on 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and whether on not we are the ones who[br]want to modify the technology 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or whether we want to work with[br]professionals or a team or regulators 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or whoever it is to modify our technology 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We don't have autonomy over our own[br]destinies, unless we have control 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 over our software, unless we can see how[br]it's written, see how it operates 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and also have the ability to modify and[br]implement those modifications. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Autonomy also fits into that narrative[br]that I mentioned before about consent. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 An enthusiastic consent to the way that[br]we're interacting with technology, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the way that the results are being used. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is very vital for our autonomy freedom. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Another major category of areas where[br]we think that software freedom is essential 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is within security. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We must have control over our security[br]tools. We must be able to review the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 security software that we're using. We[br]need to not only be able to review the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 source code and see how--[br]we may not always be able to see that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there are backdoors that having the[br]opportunity to review that source code 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is a critical component, and the ability[br]to modify when there is a vulnerability 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is really important too. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There's this study called the [br]"Honeymoon Effect" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 raise your hand if you have heard of[br]the Honeymoon Effect, just curious 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 about that, just a few people.[br]They studied the number of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 vulnerabilities in software over time[br]as opposed to bugs in software over time 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The number of bugs in software is[br]generally a decreasing number as a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 project matures. But then if you look[br]instead at known vulnerabilities, there's 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this period of time where the known[br]vulnerabilities are flat and they call 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the honeymoon period, because it[br]was the time where there were no 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 known vulnerabilities in that source[br]code and the software project 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and once there was one vulnerability 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 found it increased at an almost 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 exponential rate. And it was interesting[br]and they studied how 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000
