0:00:06.494,0:00:38.190 [Music] 0:00:44.253,0:00:48.253 I'm fascinated with the way language 0:00:48.253,0:00:50.913 is central to [br]our world view as indigenous people. 0:00:50.913,0:00:54.874 I'm a Naheo artist and curator living on[br]Lekwungen territory in Victoria BC. 0:00:56.451,0:00:58.761 My personal research centers [br]around language 0:00:58.761,0:01:02.067 revitalization and how it connects us[br]to our cultures and lands. 0:01:03.742,0:01:06.275 Over the past few years I've been on a 0:01:06.275,0:01:07.395 journey to learn the [br]Cree language. 0:01:08.227,0:01:10.556 It's been a challenging [br]and incredibly rewarding experience. 0:01:12.486,0:01:15.094 Now I want to travel to Alberta, [br]where my ancestors are 0:01:15.094,0:01:19.094 from to discover the different ways that 0:01:19.094,0:01:23.094 communities are revitalizing their[br]languages. 0:01:25.757,0:01:27.857 My mother and I both grew up not knowing 0:01:27.857,0:01:31.277 anything about our Cree family because she was adopted out at birth 0:01:31.277,0:01:33.267 as part of the '60s scoop. 0:01:34.008,0:01:35.528 Twelve years ago, [br]we met our Cree family, 0:01:35.640,0:01:37.243 and since then I have been in a 0:01:37.243,0:01:39.252 process of connecting with the community 0:01:39.252,0:01:41.253 in Wabasca, Alberta, the place where my 0:01:41.253,0:01:43.403 kokum, my grandmother Florence, [br]was born. 0:01:47.477,0:01:49.211 I recently met Nora Yellowmee,[br]an administrator 0:01:49.211,0:01:53.297 at the local school,[br]Oski Pskiknowew Kamik. 0:01:54.719,0:01:56.269 After realizing that we were second 0:01:56.269,0:01:59.988 cousins, she offered to help[br]me learn about my family tree. 0:02:01.254,0:02:05.254 (Nora) You have your grandmother, Florence. 0:02:09.707,0:02:12.567 and her mother is Isabelle, and then, 0:02:12.567,0:02:20.279 I'm here. And your [br]grandmother. And your mom. 0:02:20.949,0:02:23.066 Um, Fancine. 0:02:23.066,0:02:23.936 (Nora) Your first cousins or 0:02:23.936,0:02:25.855 second cousins.[br](Man) Ok. 0:02:26.476,0:02:30.476 (Nora) And you're down here.[br](Man) I'm down there. 0:02:30.730,0:02:33.480 Yeah, this is more than, 0:02:33.480,0:02:37.139 a lot more than I knew from [br]before I met you, before I came up. 0:02:37.716,0:02:41.716 (Nora) Yea, that's Isabelle. 0:02:42.233,0:02:46.233 Nohkom Isabelle. 0:02:47.499,0:02:51.499 This means a lot to me to see this. 0:02:51.499,0:02:55.271 Again, um, because[br]the more that I see it the more that I 0:02:55.271,0:02:57.177 hear about this, 0:02:57.177,0:03:00.557 and talk about it, it's going to stick and 0:03:00.557,0:03:00.557 I'll understand more and know more[br]through that process. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Nora) My dream for the language here, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 starting with the school, is to have 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 people who speak the language speak it 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 everyday because we are not getting that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There are many Cree speakers working here, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but they are not speaking it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 For people, the young families and young 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 mothers, speak Cree to their children and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 all the rest of it all follow. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Seeing a photo of my Cocom (?) Florence 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as a young woman created a sense of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 healing and re connection. After feeling 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 disconnected for most of my life, knowing 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 more about my family's history has 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 allowed me to connect deeper with 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 my ancestors. There is so much more to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 discover, but like learning the language, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this will take time. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The Kapaskwatinak Cultural Education 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Center is a place for the Children of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Wabaska to connect to the land 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and their culture. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Knowledge Keeper Lorraine Cardinal helps 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 guide the children through land based 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 education including coming of age [br]ceremonies. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm excited to learn about these teachings 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 since I didn't have the opportunities to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 experience them. Growing up disconnected 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 from community and family. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The reason that I do these things, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 like the coming of age because its 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 also my responsibility as a Naheo School 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to protect the children, creator's 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 children. We need to teach them those 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 protocols. We need to teach them 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 values. They need to know them so that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they don't end up getting hurt in 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the future and that shame of our 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 language and who we are, and our 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 cerimonial ways. Losing those has caused 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 big destruction in our communities 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because our children as they're growing 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 up, they know who they are, they came 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with the gift of knowing who they are. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I have a responsibility to pass those 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 teachings on to other children too 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because they will experiment, they will 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 explore and we want to prevent them 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 from hurting each other or [br]hurting themselves. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Singing and drums) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Lorraine) They call that (??????????), 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 young manhood and young womanhood. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I want to thank you and honor you for 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 coming into this world. You are a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 blessing to us. We are so very honored 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to have you as part of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 us, Naheo school. Always remember 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to hold your head up, don't be ashamed 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and always accept yourself for who you are 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and honor those gifts you brought 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with you and welcome into 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 womanhood. Welcome. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It truly is a blessing and an honor to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 have you as a young Naheo (Iskhoo?), 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A young Naheo woman and welcome. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (children talking) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Lorraine) Somehow, someway fear got 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 instilled in us people. Shame got 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 instilled in us as indigenous people. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Our children, what they experienced here 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 today taught them how sacred they are, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 how important they are, how 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 beautiful they are and that they are not 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 just beautiful in physical form. That 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they're beautiful in spiritual form too. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 All we need to do is believe in them, to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 love them, and to tell them that they're 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 important and they'll start feeling 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 good about themselves. I'm proud of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 them. Their spirit is still alive and well. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Narrator) What do you see being the way 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 forward so that these young ones in the[br]community 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 can not only understand the language 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and its relationship to their spirit 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and their relationship, to the land 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to each other and to themselves but be 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 speaking it? How do you feel about 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the future of the language in these 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 next generations to come? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have to believe in ourselves to be able 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to do it, and we need to set our goal and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 if it revitalizes the language then lets 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 do that. How do we learn Cree? We learned 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it sitting around with the old people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 visiting eachother and our parents 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 speaking to us, you know? So, we can get 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it back. We just need to do it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 John Bigstone is a Wabiskaw elder 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who carries vast spiritual and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 ceremonial knowledge. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He invited me to the land where he holds 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 sweat lodge ceremonies to share teachings 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 about the spirit within our languages. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Music) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Inhales deeply) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It clears your mind when you breathe in 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 this smudge. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 English language is inadequate if you are going 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to describe spirit. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Its inadequate. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They named it according to their 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 connection to the plant becuase they spoke 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to the plant and they had a connection. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They had a connection to all of life. They 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 understood their environment. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They understood that everything was alive, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and your spirtit has a connection to that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 spirit of mother earth, and everything 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that grows on her body. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Prior to contact, everything that was 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 described in a more spiritual way. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You know, had a spiritual meaning. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (((((((((Time- 10:31)))))))
