9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I would like to start 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with the story of Mary, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a woman from an African village. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Her first memories 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 are of her family fleeing violent riots 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 orchestrated 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 by the ruling political party. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Her brother was murdered 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 by the state-sponsored militia, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and she was raped more than once 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 just because she belonged[br]to the wrong party. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 One morning, a month before the election, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Mary's village was called to[br]another intimidation meeting. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In this meeting, these men[br]standing in front of them 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 telling them, "We know who you are, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we know who you will vote for, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and if you're not going[br]to drop the right paper, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we're going to take revenge." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But for Mary, this meeting is different. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 She feels different. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This time, she's waiting for this meeting, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because this time, she's carrying 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a small hidden camera in her dress, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a camera that nobody else can see. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Nobody is allowed to film[br]in these meetings. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You risk your life if you do. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Mary knows that, but she also knows 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that the only way to stop them 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and to protect herself 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and her community 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is to expose their intimidation, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to make sure they understand 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 somebody is following them, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to break the impunity they feel. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Mary and her friends were filming 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for months undercover 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the intimidation of[br]the ruling political party. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Video) [Filmed With Hidden Cameras] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Man: We are going to speak[br]about the upcoming elections. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Nothing can stup us from doing what we want. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If we hear you are with [the opposition] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we will not forgive you. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Militia Intimidation Rally] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [The Party] can torture you at any time. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The youth can beat you. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Disruption of Political Meeting] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 For those who lie, saying they are back with [the Party], 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 your time is running out. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Party Youth Militia] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Some have died because they rebelled. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Some have lost their homes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you don't work together with [the Party], 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you will lead a very bad life. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Oren Yakobovich: These images[br]were broadcast all over the world, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but more importantly, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they have been broadcast 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 back to the community. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The perpetrators saw them too. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They understood somebody[br]is following them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They got scared. Impunity was broken. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Mary and her friends forced 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the ruling political party 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 not to use violence during the election, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and saved hundreds of lives. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Mary is just one of hundreds of people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that my organization had helped 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to document human rights violations 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 using cameras. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 My background should have[br]led me to a different direction. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I was born in Israel 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to a right-wing family, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and as long as I remember myself, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I wanted to join the Israeli army 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to serve my country and prove that I was 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 what I believed was our right 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for the whole land. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I joined the Israeli army just after 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the first intifada,[br]the first Palestinian uprising, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I served in one of the hard-minded, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 toughest, aggressive infantry units, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I got the biggest gun in my platoon. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Quite fast, I became an officer 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and got soldiers under my command, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and as time passed, I started[br]serving in the West Bank, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I saw these images. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I didn't like what I saw. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It took me a while, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but eventually I refused[br]to serve in the West Bank 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and had to spend time in jail. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It was a bit 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 — (Applause) — 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It was not that bad, I have to say. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It was a bit like being in a hotel, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but with very shitty food. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In jail, I kept thinking that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I need people to know, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I need people to understand 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 what's the reality[br]in the West Bank looks like. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I need them to hear what I heard, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I need them to see what I saw, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but I also understood, we needed 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Palestinians themselves, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the people that are suffering, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to be able to tell their own stories, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 not journalists or filmmakers 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that are coming outside of the situation. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I joined a human rights organization, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Israeli human rights[br]organization called B'Tselem. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Together, we analyzed the West Bank 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and picked a hundred families that[br]are living in the most risky places: 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 close to checkpoints, near army bases, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 side by side with settlers. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We gave them cameras and training. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Quite fast, we started getting 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 very disturbing images 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 about how the settlers 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the soldiers are abusing them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I would like to share with you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 two clips from this project. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Both of them were broadcast in Israel, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it created a massive debate, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I have to warn you, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 some of you might find them 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 quite explicit. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The masked men you will see in the first clips 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 are Jewish settlers. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Minutes before the camera was turned on, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they approached a Palestinian family 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that was working their land 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and told them that they[br]have to leave the land, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because this land belongs[br]to the Jewish settlers. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The Palestinians refused. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Let's see what happened. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The masked men that are approaching 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 are Jewish settlers. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They are approaching[br]the Palestinian family. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is a demonstration in the West Bank. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The guy in green is Palestinian. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He will be arrested in a second. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Here you see him[br]blindfolded and handcuffed. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In a few seconds, he regrets he came 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to this demonstration. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He'd been shot in the foot 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with a rubber bullet. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He is okay. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Not all the settlers and the soldiers 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 are acting this way. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We're talking about a tiny minority, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but they have to be brought to justice. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This clips, and others like them, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 forced the army and the police[br]to start investigations. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They've been shown in Israel, of course, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the Israeli public[br]was exposed to them also. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This project redefined[br]the struggle for human rights 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the Occupied Territories, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we managed to reduce 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the number of violent attacks 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the West Bank. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The success of this project[br]got me thinking 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 how I can take the same methodology 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to other places in the world. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now, we tend to believe that today, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with all of the technology, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the smartphone and the Internet, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we are able to see and understand 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 most of what's happening in the world, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and people are able to tell their story, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but it's only partly true. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Until today, with all[br]the technology we have, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 less than half of the world's population 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 has access to the Internet, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and more than three billion people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 — I'm repeating the number, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 three billion people — are consuming news 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that is censored by those in power. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 More or less around the same, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm approached by a great guy[br]named Uri Fruchtmann. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He's a filmmaker and an activist. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We understood we are[br]thinking along the same line, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we decided to establish Videre, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 our organization, together. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 While building the organization in London, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we've been traveling undercover to places 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where community was suffering from abuses, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where mass atrocities were happening, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and there was a lack of reporting. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We tried to understand how we can help. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There were four things that I learned. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The first thing is that we have to engage 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with communities that are[br]living in the rural areas, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where violations are happening[br]far from the public eyes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We need to partner with them, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we need to understand which images 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 are not making it out there 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and help them to document them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The second thing I learned 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is that we have to enable them to film 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in a safe way. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Security has to be the priority. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Where I used to work before,[br]in the West Bank, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 one can take a camera out, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 most likely not going to get shot, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but in places we wanted to work, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 just try to pull a phone out,[br]and you're dead, literally dead. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is why we decided 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to take the operation undercover 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 when necessary, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and use mostly hidden cameras. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Unfortunately, I can't show you[br]the hidden cameras we're using today 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for obvious reasons, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but this is cameras we used before. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You can buy them off the shelf. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Today, we're building a custom-made 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 hidden camera, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 like the one that Mary was wearing 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in her dress to film[br]the intimidation meeting 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of the ruling political party. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's a camera that nobody can see 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that blends into the environment, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 into the surroundings. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Now, filming securities go beyond 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 using hidden cameras. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Being secure starts way before 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the activist is turning the camera on. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 To keep our partners safe, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we work to understand[br]the risk of every location 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and of every shot before it's happened, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 building a backup plan[br]if something goes wrong, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and make sure we have everything in place 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 before our operations start. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The third thing I learned 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is the importance of verification. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You can have an amazing shot of atrocity, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but if you can't verify it, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it's worth nothing. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Recently, like in the ongoing war in Syria 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or the war in Gaza, we've seen images 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that are staged or brought[br]from a different conflict. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This misinformation destroys 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the credibility of the source, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it's harmed the credibility of other 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 reliable and trustworthy sources. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We use a variety of ways to make sure 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we can verify the information 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we can trust the materials.
