0:00:02.879,0:00:06.640 Hello! Welcome back to another episode of[br]make thrift buy, the show where you send in 0:00:06.640,0:00:10.830 suggestions of cool clothing or accessories[br]that you’ve seen on the internet and I do 0:00:10.830,0:00:15.570 my best to recreate them! Today’s episode[br]was suggested by LxIDIY13, who wanted me to 0:00:15.570,0:00:19.949 try and recreate this animal face shoulder[br]bag. The one that was suggested to me is from 0:00:19.949,0:00:24.819 a cheap wholesale website called CNDirect,[br]but you can basically find these things, like, 0:00:24.819,0:00:29.470 everywhere. You can find them in all different[br]sizes from large tote bags to really small 0:00:29.470,0:00:36.430 coin purses, and you can also find them for[br]worryingly cheap. Like I found these purses 0:00:36.430,0:00:43.300 on ebay for 93 cents, and that includes free[br]shipping.... Now when something is this cheap, 0:00:43.300,0:00:48.480 it makes me a little bit worried about exactly[br]how much the person who made it was getting 0:00:48.480,0:00:51.110 paid. Besides, it looked like something that[br]would be a really fun challenge to try and 0:00:51.110,0:00:53.210 recreate for myself. SO, let’s begin! 0:00:53.210,0:00:57.370 So the first thing that I needed to do was[br]to find an image of an animal's face. I went 0:00:57.370,0:01:01.440 onto a royalty-free image website and I typed[br]in “puppy”. Sorry cat people, but I wanted 0:01:01.440,0:01:05.079 to make a dog face bag instead. Now, the best[br]type of image for this project will be an 0:01:05.079,0:01:11.460 animal that has a really round head, and sticky-up[br]ears – so, like this one, or this, or this 0:01:11.460,0:01:15.479 or this. However, this French Bulldog won[br]my heart, and it was also a perfect image 0:01:15.479,0:01:19.840 to use because it had a really round head,[br]very sticky-up ears and a white background 0:01:19.840,0:01:21.139 which would be easy to remove. 0:01:21.139,0:01:25.520 Next, I opened up the image in photoshop and[br]I removed the background and the body. Then, 0:01:25.520,0:01:29.259 I carefully separated the ears from the image[br]so that they were separate from the head. 0:01:29.259,0:01:32.749 I also made the ears a little bit smaller[br]in relation to the head, because I didn't 0:01:32.749,0:01:34.369 want GIANT ears on my bag. 0:01:34.369,0:01:38.670 I saved the image as a high quality JPEG,[br]opened it up in a word document and then printed 0:01:38.670,0:01:42.600 it out onto photo transfer paper; along with[br]a bunch of other images that I’m going to 0:01:42.600,0:01:46.619 use for future projects, because I don’t[br]like to waste my photo transfer paper on blank 0:01:46.619,0:01:48.329 space! This stuff isn't that cheap! 0:01:48.329,0:01:53.130 Speaking of wasting photo transfer paper,[br]the first printing… didn’t go so well. 0:01:53.130,0:01:57.299 I tried to fix this dodgy print job with a[br]black marker, but… I’m not the artist 0:01:57.299,0:02:02.379 I thought I was, and, this looked... let's[br]be honest, really bad. So, I needed to print 0:02:02.380,0:02:03.300 out another. 0:02:03.310,0:02:07.389 Now when you’re printing your image, make[br]sure that you select the highest quality printing 0:02:07.389,0:02:11.030 possible. This is where I went wrong before.[br]Now THIS is much better. 0:02:11.030,0:02:15.840 Then I also decided that the head needed to[br]be a bit bigger anyway, so I printed out a 0:02:15.840,0:02:17.920 third.[br]And I guess that I’ll make a coin purse 0:02:17.920,0:02:21.280 out of the smaller one.[br]Anyway, as you can see I cut out and separated 0:02:21.280,0:02:26.160 the head and the ear pieces. And then, I peeled[br]the backing paper off the photo transfers. 0:02:26.160,0:02:31.160 Then, with this cotton linen material that[br]I thrifted, I cut out pieces of fabric that 0:02:31.160,0:02:35.810 were a bit larger than my images. And then,[br]I ironed both the head and the ears onto their 0:02:35.810,0:02:39.490 respective bits of linen fabric to transfer[br]the images onto the fabric. 0:02:39.490,0:02:44.170 Then, I used some fabric scissors to cut the[br]fabric to the same shape as the images, leaving 0:02:44.170,0:02:48.570 about half an inch of fabric border around[br]the edges. 0:02:48.570,0:02:55.210 Then, I worked out all the different pieces[br]that I was going to need for my bag. 0:02:55.210,0:03:01.940 So, for the ears, I cut out two more pieces[br]of black linen that were identical in shape 0:03:01.940,0:03:03.530 to the ears that I have already cut out. 0:03:03.530,0:03:07.610 Then, I placed each ear and it’s identical[br]back piece right-sides together, and then 0:03:07.610,0:03:09.210 I sewed them together like this. 0:03:09.210,0:03:13.140 Then, I cut off the excess fabric outside[br]of the stitches, and I turned the ears the 0:03:13.140,0:03:17.570 right way around, so that the photo transfer[br]is on the outside. 0:03:17.570,0:03:21.960 For the front face section, I grabbed this[br]thick fake leathery material, that I already 0:03:21.960,0:03:25.870 owned, and I cut out a piece that was identical[br]in size to the face piece. This backing made 0:03:25.870,0:03:30.150 out of this stuff material is basically going[br]to help the bag maintain it's shape. Then 0:03:30.150,0:03:34.830 I sewed the two together, wrong sides together,[br]like this, leaving a gap down the bottom. 0:03:34.830,0:03:38.180 Through the gap, I filled the piece with a[br]little bit of stuffing which will also help 0:03:38.180,0:03:40.140 it maintain its shape. 0:03:42.530,0:03:46.870 The next step is attaching the ears, which[br]I attached to the front piece like THIS. I 0:03:46.870,0:03:49.870 know this looks like you’re sewing them[br]on upsidedown, but just wait – this will 0:03:49.870,0:03:51.060 all make sense at the end. 0:03:51.060,0:03:57.360 I also cut off the excess fabric at the ends[br]of the ears. Now in the next few steps, these 0:03:57.360,0:04:01.090 ears will need to stay DOWN out of the way[br]on the front of the bag like this. 0:04:01.090,0:04:03.060 Now I'm going to attach my bag’s strap. 0:04:03.060,0:04:08.110 With 52 inches of bag strap… material…[br]whatever you call this stuff – I secured 0:04:08.110,0:04:12.010 the strap onto the front of the face piece.[br]I attached it using paper clips so that I 0:04:12.010,0:04:16.090 wouldn’t pierce through the photo transfer[br]with pins. Making sure first that the strap 0:04:16.090,0:04:19.459 was not twisted, I sewed it onto the front[br]of the bag like this. 0:04:19.459,0:04:23.960 Then, I gathered up all of the bag’s strap[br]and I secured it with an elastic band. Like 0:04:23.960,0:04:27.690 the ears, this will also have to stay out[br]of the way in the next few steps. 0:04:27.690,0:04:31.410 Finally, the front piece was FINISHED, and[br]the bag-making can begin! 0:04:31.410,0:04:35.040 Now the method that I’m going to use to[br]make my bag is extremely similar to how I 0:04:35.040,0:04:39.280 made this fluffy clutch back in episode 32.[br]Now, if you’re wanting to try and make this 0:04:39.280,0:04:44.060 round bag, I highly recommend that you try[br]it out using RECTANGLES first, using the same 0:04:44.060,0:04:46.000 method that I did with my clutch. 0:04:46.000,0:04:50.620 SO, in order to make my bag I am going to[br]need my outer front piece, an outer back piece, 0:04:50.620,0:04:54.490 for which I am also using fake leather, and[br]front and back lining pieces. 0:04:54.490,0:04:58.850 I am also going to need a zipper. Now, the[br]zipper is best if it’s the same colour as 0:04:58.850,0:05:02.380 your photo transfer, but unfortunately I didn’t[br]have any black zippers that were long enough 0:05:02.380,0:05:05.160 so I had to use this thrifted cream-coloured[br]one instead. 0:05:05.160,0:05:09.370 Now, the first step of making a simple bag[br]like this is to attach the front pieces to the zipper. 0:05:10.860,0:05:15.160 So first, lay down the lining piece and then[br]I attached the zipper, with the zipper facing UP, 0:05:15.160,0:05:16.710 to the lining. 0:05:16.710,0:05:20.960 Now it helps here if you use a zipper foot[br]on your sewing machine, and you can also unzip 0:05:20.960,0:05:24.430 the zipper because that will make sewing around[br]the curve a little bit easier. 0:05:24.430,0:05:28.040 As you can see, my zipper is a little bit[br]longer than I needed it to be, so I just let 0:05:28.040,0:05:32.020 it go off the edges like this. As long as[br]you leave the zip part in the middle, this 0:05:32.020,0:05:36.360 will work fine. Next, it was time for me to[br]attach the front piece, which I placed right-side 0:05:36.360,0:05:40.800 down on top of the zipper, and then I sewed[br]it on like this. This is probably the most 0:05:40.800,0:05:47.930 difficult part to sew together, so I unzipped[br]the zipper and I went really slowly. 0:05:47.930,0:05:51.960 Once that was all sewn together I flipped[br]the lining over to the other side, so that 0:05:51.960,0:05:56.700 the zipper was free. The next step is to essentially[br]do the same thing again – I placed the lining 0:05:56.700,0:06:00.830 down, then I put the zipper on right side[br]up, and I sewed them together like this. Next 0:06:00.830,0:06:06.389 comes the outer back piece, which is placed[br]right sides down, and then sewn on like this. 0:06:06.389,0:06:13.520 Then, again, I flipped the lining on the back[br]piece around to the other side. 0:06:13.520,0:06:17.480 And now, I have something that almost resembles[br]a bag! Kind of. 0:06:17.480,0:06:21.430 Now the next thing that I did was to place[br]the front and back outer pieces right sides 0:06:21.430,0:06:26.610 together, move the lining UP and out of the[br]way, and then I sewed the front and back outer 0:06:26.610,0:06:28.350 pieces together like this. 0:06:30.620,0:06:35.460 Then, I pulled the lining UP and above the[br]bag as far as I could – and as you can see, 0:06:35.460,0:06:39.480 this is rather difficult to do on a circular-shaped[br]purse – and then I sewed the lining pieces 0:06:39.480,0:06:43.000 together like THIS, with a large gap in the[br]middle. 0:06:43.000,0:06:48.449 Then through that hole in the lining, I pulled[br]everything the right way around. And, from 0:06:48.449,0:06:53.500 what looked like a big old mess just a moment[br]ago, I got something which actually looked 0:06:53.500,0:06:55.560 ALMOST like a finished bag! 0:06:58.490,0:07:02.200 The only part which still needed sewing together[br]is the small gaps at the side, which I wasn’t 0:07:02.210,0:07:05.300 able to sew together earlier because of the[br]bag’s roundness. 0:07:05.300,0:07:09.169 Basically, all I have to do is to hand sew[br]the gaps together using a needle and black 0:07:09.169,0:07:10.949 thread, like this. 0:07:16.260,0:07:19.710 Now with the outer section of the bag all[br]sewn up, the last step was to pull out the 0:07:19.710,0:07:25.130 lining and sew the gap closed. Then, I put[br]the lining back into the bag, zipped it up, 0:07:25.130,0:07:27.240 and I am DONE. 0:07:27.240,0:07:29.340 So, how did I go? 0:07:29.340,0:07:32.840 [music plays] 0:08:05.460,0:08:09.840 So, this was the final product, or products,[br]and I couldn’t be happier with how they 0:08:09.850,0:08:14.370 turned out! They turned out soooo so well.[br]This project is a definite: 0:08:14.370,0:08:16.110 [scissor snipping sound effect] 0:08:16.240,0:08:18.240 The only frustrating thing was that the size 0:08:18.250,0:08:21.590 of the bag was kind of limited to the size[br]of a standard A4 size sheet of paper because 0:08:21.590,0:08:25.000 that's all my printer can handle. I couldn’t[br]think of a way to make it bigger without actually 0:08:25.000,0:08:29.330 going and getting purchasing printed fabric,[br]which is kind of expensive. So I was wondering 0:08:29.330,0:08:33.930 if any of you had an idea of a way that I[br]would be able to make this bigger at home, 0:08:33.930,0:08:38.089 without just having to stick two transfer[br]sheets together because there would be a line 0:08:38.089,0:08:42.399 right down the middle; it'd look kind of dodgy...[br]If you have any ideas, then I'd love to hear 0:08:42.399,0:08:43.659 them, let me know in the comments below! 0:08:43.659,0:08:48.120 Now, I want to address an issue that I know[br]is going to come up if previous youtube comments 0:08:48.120,0:08:52.910 are anything to go by. Each of these cost[br]me around about $5 each to make. And while 0:08:52.910,0:08:57.240 yes, while one of the points of this series[br]is to make fashion more accessible by showing 0:08:57.240,0:09:00.610 you how you can recreate items from the high[br]street for a fraction of the cost, that is 0:09:00.610,0:09:04.960 not the main point of this series. Another[br]extremely important reason that I do this 0:09:04.960,0:09:09.390 series is to reject the culture of “fast[br]fashion”. And if something like a coin purse 0:09:09.390,0:09:15.029 only costs you 93 cents to make and then ship[br]halfway across the world to your doorstep 0:09:15.029,0:09:19.140 – something seriously wrong is going on[br]here. The person who made it is most likely 0:09:19.140,0:09:22.950 working in awful sweatshop conditions, or[br]they're a child, or they're working under 0:09:22.950,0:09:27.510 slave labor, and I can’t support any company[br]that would allow its workers to be treated 0:09:27.510,0:09:33.710 that way in order just to sell people who[br]are more well-off cheap stuff. And THAT is 0:09:33.710,0:09:37.950 half of the reason that I make my own things.[br]Be conscious of where your stuff is coming from! 0:09:37.950,0:09:42.440 And ending on that kinda political note, it’s[br]now time to say goodbye.
