Defense Committee of the USSR ordered the
the deportation of 16,700 Muslim families of
Turkish , Kurdish and Hemshin origins from
the towns of Ahiska, Adıgön, Ahılkelek,
Aspinza, Bogdonovka, and the Acara
Autonomous Republic on July 31, 1944.
Today, these regions lie in Georgia along
its border with Turkey.
Stalin ordered Inspector Yoldash Beria of
the People’s Interior Affairs to carry out
this deportation in November that year.
Some 86,000 people were driven out of
their homes and forcefully loaded on
trains. They were left to starve on these
journeys that lasted several days.
Cau·ca·sia: A region between the Black and Caspian Seas that includes southwest Russia, Georgia, Azerbaijan, and Armenia, and that forms part of the traditional boundary between Europe and Asia.
The region contains the Caucasus Mountains, dividing it into Ciscaucasia in the north and Transcaucasia in the south; one of the most complex ethnic areas in the world, with over 50 different peoples. Also called: the Caucasus.
