122 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I mean, you've talked about how so many people are underserved 123 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 by the traditional banking industry. 124 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 How do we make sure that those people 125 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 have that opportunity? 202 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 DS: Well, I think the entire financial services industry 203 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 is evolving right now, 204 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and so I think banks will always play a role, 205 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 or as far into the future as I can see, 206 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 but it will evolve. 207 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I mean, think about basic credit cards. 208 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Today, you think about a credit card, 209 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and you think about it predominantly as a form factor, 210 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 something that you pull out of your pocket. 211 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Sometimes there's status associated with what you're pulling out of your pocket, 212 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 depending on the color of that credit card. 213 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 But really I think those form factors start to go away 214 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and become embedded in digital wallets. 215 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 So credit will always be an important element. 216 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 You know, most people in the world, 217 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 it isn't that their cash outlays exceed their cash intake. 218 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 It's just that they're not evenly distributed. 219 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 So there are times where your cash outflows exceed your cash intake, 220 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and there you need some form of credit to make up that difference. 221 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And so I think forms of credit will always be an important element. 222 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 But the way that you extend credit will change going forward, 223 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 the way that you think about scoring people 224 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 in terms of can they handle credit. 225 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 You know, traditionally, in more developed countries, 226 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 you use what's called FICA scores or Bureau scores, 227 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 but those ignore so many of the financial transactions 228 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 that people who are outside the financial system do, 229 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 like paying rent or paying their bills on time. 230 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And with data and information and machine learning around that -- 231 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and we need to be careful that there aren't biases 232 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 built into those algorithms -- 233 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 we can start to do things that could never be done before. 234 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I'll just give you one quick example. 235 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 We're one of the largest providers of working capital to small businesses 236 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 in the world. 237 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 We're probably one of the top five in the United States. 238 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 So we've done over 14, 15 billion dollars 239 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 of lending of working capital to small businesses. 240 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Seventy percent of that goes to the 30 percent of counties 241 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 where 10 or more banks have closed branches. 242 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And where do banks close branches? 243 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Banks close branches in neighborhoods 244 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 where the medium income is below the national average, 245 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 which makes sense because for a branch to be profitable 246 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 they need a certain amount of deposits 247 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 for that branch to actually be profitable. 248 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And so, in lower income neighborhoods, 249 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 branches are starting to close. 250 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 So why are 70 percent of our loans in those lower income neighborhoods?
