0:00:06.576,0:00:10.319 Now, a lot of people really struggle with the F chord, the big barre chord F, 0:00:10.319,0:00:14.521 the big bad F everone's scared of but that one's not coming up until Stage 6. 0:00:14.521,0:00:19.882 What I'm gonna show you is a nice little work-around that you can very often play instead of big bad F 0:00:19.882,0:00:26.532 and that's this F major 7. It's not a particularly difficult chord, in fact actually it's kinda easy 0:00:26.532,0:00:32.045 but what's difficult about it is making sure that you use your ears to let you know when you can use it. 0:00:32.045,0:00:38.865 So if in the sheet music it says 'F' you should try and play this Fmaj7 if you struggle with Big F 0:00:38.865,0:00:42.265 and use your ears to tell you, does it sound cool or not 0:00:42.265,0:00:44.703 'cause sometimes it will sound cool, sometimes it won't. 0:00:44.703,0:00:48.327 For those of you that are music theory buffs or have studied other instruments 0:00:48.327,0:00:54.246 if the song is in the key of C then you play Fmaj7 instead of F. It's probably gonna sound cool. 0:00:54.246,0:01:00.424 If it's in any other keys the Fmaj7 might sound a little bit, well, not right, a bit weird. 0:01:00.424,0:01:06.363 So, just be aware of that and most importantly remember that if it sounds good, it is good. 0:01:06.363,0:01:11.356 So if you try and insert the Fmaj7 instead of an F and it sounds good: 0:01:11.356,0:01:14.645 Brilliant! Use it! It's working, man! That's what the whole point is. 0:01:14.645,0:01:19.036 If it sounds bad, go: 'Uh, OK, I can't play that song until I learned proper bar chord F.' 0:01:19.036,0:01:22.294 which is like I said. It's coming up in two stages. So, we're in Stage 4 now 0:01:22.294,0:01:26.326 and it comes at the beginning of Stage 6, so you haven't got that long to wait. 0:01:26.326,0:01:30.164 So, let's go to a close-up now and check out this Fmaj7. 0:01:30.779,0:01:35.780 So here we are, this is our Fmaj7 chord and you can see if you look at the neck diagram there 0:01:35.780,0:01:38.141 that we are not gonna play the thickest two strings. 0:01:38.141,0:01:42.206 So it's kinda like a D chord in that way. We're not gonna touch those two thick ones at all 0:01:42.206,0:01:45.388 'cause that will sound really horrible with this Fmaj7. 0:01:45.388,0:01:50.645 Now, the fingering is quite easy 'cause we've got here just literally open thinnest string, 0:01:50.645,0:01:55.869 then first finger 1st fret 2nd string, second finger 2nd fret of the 3rd string, 0:01:55.869,0:02:01.811 and third finger 3rd fret of the 4th string. That's a very cool sounding chord. 0:02:01.811,0:02:06.643 . . . 0:02:06.643,0:02:11.289 Now, what's important to realize here, it's a good trick to try and get your third finger 0:02:11.289,0:02:17.338 just leaning over to touch that 5th string a little bit, just to stop it ringing out in case you hit it accidently, 0:02:17.338,0:02:21.315 just if you like a little precautionary measure. 0:02:21.315,0:02:26.253 Now, if you find yourself ever struggling with this one a good way, to get to it as well is from C chord. 0:02:26.253,0:02:31.554 So, if you're starting off with a regular C chord and you move both your second and third fingers 0:02:31.554,0:02:36.550 down toward the ground by one string, you end up with an Fmaj7. 0:02:36.550,0:02:42.198 It's a very, very...you can hear it's kind of an airy sounding chord. I really like this chord. 0:02:42.198,0:02:45.730 and very often you'll find that this chord is used with C. 0:02:45.730,0:02:51.413 So you will often find yourself going like C, Fmaj7 and then maybe G, that kind of thing. 0:02:51.413,0:02:56.017 So, it's a really, really nice little one to get under your fingers. 0:02:57.248,0:02:59.412 I am gonna show you the proper way to play F 0:02:59.412,0:03:03.933 and a whole bunch of cheats on how to get around playing F if you're finding F really difficult 0:03:03.933,0:03:07.692 but I want you to get this chord down, this Fmaj7 chord down, 0:03:07.692,0:03:12.778 'cause it's a really, really useful one to have down at this stage before you've learned proper Big F. 0:03:12.778,0:03:17.726 So, try and get that one under your fingers nicely and I'll see you for yet another chord, 0:03:17.726,0:03:24.368 you learn a lot of chords this stage, I'll see you for another chord in a moment.
