WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 My name is Harry Baker. Harry Baker is my name. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If your name was Harry Baker, then our names would be the same. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's a short introductory part. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Yeah, I'm Harry. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I study math. I write poetry. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I thought I'd start with a love poem about prime numbers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is called "59." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was going to call it "Prime Time Loving." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That reaction is why I didn't. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, "59." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 59 wakes up on the wrong side of the bed, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Realises all of his hair is on one side of his head, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Takes – just under a minute – to work out it’s because of the way that he slept, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He finds some clothes and gets dressed. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He can’t help but look in the mirror and be subtly impressed 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How he looks rough around the edges and yet casually messed, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and as he glances out the windows, he sees the sight that he gets blessed 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with a 60 from across the street. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now 60 was beautiful, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 With perfectly trimmed cuticles, Dressed in something suitable, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Never rude or crude at all. Unimprovable, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Right on time as usual, More on cue than a snooker ball 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But liked to play it super cool. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 59 wanted to tell her that he knew her favourite flower, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He thought of her every second every minute every hour, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But he knew it wouldn’t work, he’d never get the girl, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because although she lived across the street they came from different worlds. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 While 59 admired 60’s ‘perfectly round’ figure, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 60 thought 59 was… odd. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One of his favourite films was 101 Dalmatians, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She preferred the sequel. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He romanticised the idea they were star-crossed lovers, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They could go against the odds and evens because they had each other, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 While she maintained the strict views imposed upon her by her mother 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That separate could not be equal. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And though at the time he felt stupid and dumb 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 For trying to love a girl controlled by her stupid mum, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He should have been comforted by the simple sum – 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Take 59 away from 60, and you’re left with the one. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Sure enough it took him 2 months of moping around, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But 61 days later, 61 was who he found, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 His next-door neighbour, he went round to her house, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because he had lost his keys again and his parents were out. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As he noticed the slightly wonky numbers on the door, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He wondered why he’d never introduced himself before, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As she politely let him in his jaw dropped in awe – 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 61 was like 60, with a little bit more. (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She had prettier eyes, and an approachable smile, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And like him, rough-around-the-edges casual style, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And like him, everything was in disorganise piles, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And like him, her mum didn’t mind if friends stayed a while. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because she was like him, and he liked her. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He reckoned she would like me if she knew he was like her, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And it was different this time. I mean, this girl was wicked, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So he plucked up the courage and asked for her digits. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She said, "I'm 61." He grinned, said, "I'm 59." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Today I’ve had a really nice time, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So tomorrow if you wanted you could come over to mine? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She said, "Sure." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She loved talking to someone who was just as quirky, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She agreed to this unofficial first date. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In the end he was only ready one minute early, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But it didn’t matter because she arrived one minute late. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And from that moment on there was non-stop chatter, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How they loved X-Factor, how they had two factors, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 How that did not matter – distinctiveness made them better, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 By the end of the night they knew they were meant together. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And one day she was talking about ‘stuck up 60’, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She noticed that 59 looked a bit shifty. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He blushed – told her of his crush: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 “The best thing that never happened, because it led to us” 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 61 was clever see, not prone to jealousy, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She looked him in the eyes and told him quite tenderly, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You’re 59 I’m 61 together we combine to become twice what 60 could ever be. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 At this point 59 had tears in his eyes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Was so glad to have this one-of-a-kind girl in his life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He told her the very definition of being prime 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Was that with only one and himself could his heart divide, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And she was the one he felt he could give his heart to, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She said she felt the same and now she knew the films were half true. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because that wasn't real love, that love was just a sample, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because when it came to real love, they were a prime example. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Cheers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That was the first poem that I wrote 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and it was for a prime number-themed poetry night. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 -- (Laughter) -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which turned out to be a prime number-themed poetry competition. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I became a prime number-themed poetry competition winner, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or as I like to call it, a prime minister. (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And this is how I discovered these things called poetry slams, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and if you don't know what a poetry slam is, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it was a format come up with in America 30 years ago 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as a way of tricking people into going to poetry events 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by putting an exciting word like "slam" onto the end. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And each performer got three minutes to perform and then 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 random audience members would hold up scorecards, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they would end up with a numerical score, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and what this meant is, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it kind of broke down the barrier between performer and audience 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and encouraged the kind of connection with the listener. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And what it also means is you can win. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And if you win a poetry slam, you can call yourself a slam champion 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and pretend you're a wrestler, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and if you lose a poetry slam you can say, "Oh, what, poetry's a subjective art form, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you can't put numbers on such things." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But I loved it, and I got involved in these slams, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I became the U.K. slam champion 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and got invited to the Poetry World Cup in Paris, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which was unbelievable. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was people from all around the world speaking in their native languages 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to be judged by five French strangers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And somehow, I won, which was great, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I've been able to travel the world since doing it, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but it also means that this next piece 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is technically the best poem in the world. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 According to five French strangers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So this is "Paper People." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I like people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'd like some paper people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They’d be purple paper people. Maybe pop up purple paper people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Proper pop up purple paper people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ‘How do you prop up pop up purple paper people?’ 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I hear you cry. Well I… 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I’d probably prop up proper pop up purple paper people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with a proper pop up purple people paperclip, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but I’d pre-prepare appropriate adhesives as alternatives, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a cheeky pack of blu tack just in case the paper slipped. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because I could build a pop up metropolis. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but i wouldn’t wanna deal with all the paper people politics. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 paper politicians with their paper-thin policies, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 broken promises without appropriate apologies. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there’d be a little paper me, and a little paper you, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and we’d watch paper TV and it would all be paper view. (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we’d watch the poppy paper rappers rap about their paper package 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or watch paper people carriers get stuck in paper traffic on the A4. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Paper. (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There’d be a paper princess Kate but we’d all stare at paper Pippa, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and then we’d all live in fear of killer Jack the paper ripper. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because the paper propaganda propagates the peoples prejudices, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 papers printing pictures of the photogenic terrorists. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There’d be a little paper me, and a little paper you, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but in a pop up population people’s problems pop up too. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there’d be a pompous paper parliament who remained out of touch, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and who ignored the peoples protests about all the paper cuts, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and then the peaceful paper protests would get blown to paper pieces, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by the confetti cannons manned by pre-emptive police. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and yes there’s still be paper money, so there’d still be paper greed, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the paper piggy bankers pocketing more than they need. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 purchasing the potpourri to pepper their paper properties, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 while others live in poverty and ain’t acknowledged properly, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a proper poor economy where so many are proper poor, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but while their needs are ignored the money goes to big wars, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 origami armies unfold plans for paper planes 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 while we remain imprisoned in our own paper chains, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but the greater shame is that it always seems to stay the same, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what changes is who’s in power choosing how to lay the blame, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they’re naming names, forgetting these are names of people, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 cause in the end it all comes down to people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I like people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 cause even when the situation’s dire, it is only ever people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who are able to inspire, and on paper – 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it’s hard to see how we all cope, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but in the bottom of pandora’s box there’s still hope, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and i still hope cause i believe in people.
