Now, often when we think of early life, 0:01:15.737,0:01:18.955 we might imagine a stegosaurus 0:01:18.979,0:01:22.408 or maybe a fish crawling onto land. 0:01:23.012,0:01:25.240 But the early life that I'm talking about 0:01:25.264,0:01:29.189 is simple microscopic life, like bacteria. 0:01:29.745,0:01:33.730 And their fossils are often preserved[br]as layered rock structures, 0:01:33.754,0:01:35.888 called stromatolites. 0:01:36.515,0:01:41.482 This simple form of life[br]is almost all we see in the fossil record 0:01:41.506,0:01:45.637 for the first three billion toward the end of a full,[br]long week mapping project, 0:02:37.174,0:02:40.161 that I came across something[br]rather special. 0:02:41.026,0:02:44.633 Now, what probably looks like[br]a bunch of wrinkly old rocks 0:02:44.657,0:02:46.670 are actually stromatolites. 0:02:46.694,0:02:50.821 And at the center of this mound[br]was a small, peculiar rock 0:02:50.845,0:02:53.523 about the size of a child's hand. 0:02:54.144,0:02:59.042 It took six months before we inspected[br]this rock under a microscope, 0:02:59.066,0:03:01.682 when one of my mentors[br]at the time, Malcolm Walter,
