0:00:11.220,0:00:14.610 In the last course of my graduate program 0:00:14.630,0:00:18.460 we created an online campaign video [br]on human trafficking. 0:00:18.735,0:00:20.585 My professor at the time said, 0:00:20.825,0:00:23.995 "You're not going to change[br]the world through this project, 0:00:23.995,0:00:28.695 but you're going to add a spoon of sugar [br]into the salty ocean to sweeten it up." 0:00:29.218,0:00:34.008 You may think making peace starts [br]with presidents, prime ministers, 0:00:34.008,0:00:37.278 leaders of some countries [br]shaking hands together, 0:00:37.278,0:00:41.038 or the United Nations,[br]NGO workers tirelessly working 0:00:41.038,0:00:44.718 in the less developed field[br]for the poorest of the poor. 0:00:44.918,0:00:49.378 I was thinking the same [br]before I started my graduate program. 0:00:49.804,0:00:53.884 But today you will learn [br]that peace actually starts with you. 0:00:55.038,0:00:59.248 I came to South Korea in order [br]to conduct my field research 0:00:59.248,0:01:01.118 on the issue of "comfort women." 0:01:01.740,0:01:06.470 "Comfort women" is a euphemism [br]coined by the Japanese Imperial Army 0:01:06.470,0:01:08.620 before and during World War II. 0:01:09.037,0:01:13.657 There are women who were forced [br]into sexual slavery by the army 0:01:13.657,0:01:16.908 and a majority of them [br]are from here, South Korea. 0:01:17.198,0:01:23.038 But there are also survivors from China, [br]Taiwan, Indonesia, and the Philippines. 0:01:24.419,0:01:26.909 When I told my friends and family in Japan 0:01:26.909,0:01:30.769 that I would research [br]the issue of comfort women, 0:01:30.769,0:01:35.309 they usually say, "You're going to deal [br]with such a difficult issue." 0:01:36.553,0:01:40.173 I asked my mother why and she answered, 0:01:40.325,0:01:44.505 "I understand that the Japanese Army [br]did something terrible in the past, 0:01:44.979,0:01:48.529 but that's an embarrassing part [br]we all don't want to touch." 0:01:50.240,0:01:53.080 Many of you probably heard last year 0:01:53.090,0:01:57.240 that the government of Japan [br]and South Korea reached an agreement 0:01:57.250,0:01:59.340 on the issue of comfort women. 0:01:59.982,0:02:02.342 Under the agreement, [br]the government of Japan 0:02:02.382,0:02:07.702 will pay one billion yen to a foundation[br]that the South Korean government 0:02:07.732,0:02:11.042 will establish to offer[br]health and other services 0:02:11.062,0:02:13.502 to the elderly former comfort women. 0:02:14.219,0:02:19.659 In addition, the government of Japan [br]asked for removal of the statue 0:02:19.809,0:02:24.499 in front of the Japanese Embassy,[br]which pays tribute to the comfort women, 0:02:24.679,0:02:28.689 saying that the agreement was made[br]to stop future generations 0:02:28.689,0:02:31.049 from having to keep apologizing. 0:02:31.505,0:02:35.745 On the contrary, I believe[br]that the statue should not be removed 0:02:35.745,0:02:39.545 and the issue of comfort women [br]should continue to be discussed 0:02:39.545,0:02:44.745 and passed on to the future generations[br]in order to not repeat the history. 0:02:46.677,0:02:51.517 Sexual and gender-based violence [br]is not something that happened in the past 0:02:51.527,0:02:55.457 but it also proliferates [br]in modern everyday life. 0:02:55.886,0:02:58.476 Women are disproportionately suffering 0:02:58.506,0:03:01.926 because violence is often gendered 0:03:01.926,0:03:05.206 in attacks such as rape[br]and domestic violence. 0:03:05.737,0:03:08.437 According to[br]the World Health Organization, 0:03:08.587,0:03:11.027 one in three women worldwide 0:03:11.027,0:03:15.587 suffer from physical[br]or sexual abuse in their lifetime. 0:03:15.839,0:03:20.599 Here in South Korea, the number [br]of sexual assaults is increasing. 0:03:20.891,0:03:25.871 However, an expert says that the number [br]is just the tip of the iceberg, 0:03:26.455,0:03:29.125 as many women do not come forward 0:03:29.155,0:03:33.925 because they are afraid that they [br]are going to be insulted once again. 0:03:34.834,0:03:37.494 The situation is very similar in Japan. 0:03:37.834,0:03:41.284 Many assault survivors[br]do not want to come forward 0:03:41.314,0:03:44.414 because they feel ashamed or insulted. 0:03:45.210,0:03:49.850 Male-centered patriarchal societies[br]makes it difficult to talk 0:03:49.860,0:03:52.400 about the experience of sexual assaults. 0:03:52.732,0:03:58.282 Because being sexually assaulted also [br]enforces a form of stigma in our society. 0:03:59.686,0:04:04.086 I truly admire all the Korean women [br]who have come forward 0:04:04.086,0:04:06.806 and started to talk about[br]their painful experiences 0:04:06.806,0:04:08.516 as comfort women. 0:04:08.956,0:04:11.396 We can only imagine how hard it is 0:04:11.396,0:04:15.286 but then to talk [br]about experiences in public, 0:04:15.286,0:04:19.036 being raped over and over [br]by Japanese soldiers 0:04:19.066,0:04:22.896 and never being taken care of [br]even when they became sick. 0:04:23.295,0:04:27.055 There are also many women [br]who are abandoned and murdered 0:04:27.055,0:04:28.415 at the end of the war. 0:04:29.532,0:04:31.422 The surviving comfort women [br] 0:04:31.422,0:04:35.372 are still fighting for their rights[br]and restoration of their dignity. 0:04:35.675,0:04:38.305 And a few survivors are participating 0:04:38.315,0:04:42.215 in the weekly demonstration[br]in front of the Japanese Embassy 0:04:46.055,0:04:48.355 calling for the Japanese government 0:04:48.385,0:04:51.025 to take legal responsibility[br]for its cause. 0:04:52.716,0:04:55.416 As a final assignment of my course 0:04:55.446,0:04:58.906 we wanted to create [br]an online campaign video 0:04:58.926,0:05:01.896 to make a powerful impact on the viewers. 0:05:01.906,0:05:06.396 Together with my colleagues,[br]Arunima, Caroline, and Rebekka, 0:05:06.426,0:05:10.176 we wanted to raise[br]awareness of child trafficking. 0:05:10.512,0:05:14.132 This was our effort to sweeten [br]the ocean just a little bit. 0:05:14.512,0:05:15.577 [Video] 0:05:15.607,0:05:17.417 (Beeping) 0:05:36.152,0:05:38.402 (Sizzling) 0:05:50.935,0:05:53.295 (Scraping) 0:06:06.048,0:06:08.718 [According to the International [br]Labor Organization 0:06:08.718,0:06:10.848 an estimated 17.2 million children 0:06:10.848,0:06:12.908 are in forced domestic[br]servitude worldwide.] 0:06:13.077,0:06:16.087 [These children are as young as five.] 0:06:17.664,0:06:20.544 [It happens all over the world.] 0:06:21.077,0:06:25.567 [You can be part of the solution!] 0:06:32.181,0:06:34.081 The child domestic servitude [br] 0:06:36.821,0:06:39.691 is a form of modern day slavery. 0:06:39.691,0:06:43.771 Millions of children, all over the world,[br]are being trafficked into servitude 0:06:43.771,0:06:47.311 with a false promise [br]of education and a better life. 0:06:47.901,0:06:51.651 Many of these children[br]work up to 18 hours a day. 0:06:52.958,0:06:54.968 Often, they are not paid. 0:06:55.379,0:06:59.939 The world will likely turn its back [br]on those exploited children 0:06:59.939,0:07:01.806 unless someone has the courage 0:07:01.806,0:07:04.406 to question the practice [br]and its morality. 0:07:04.911,0:07:10.221 Even then, changes in cultures and laws[br]sufficient to stop child trafficking 0:07:10.221,0:07:11.911 will likely come slowly. 0:07:12.369,0:07:15.389 Take the issue[br]of comfort women, for example, 0:07:15.389,0:07:17.539 many of them were as young as 12 0:07:17.549,0:07:20.059 when they were forced [br]into sexual slavery. 0:07:21.003,0:07:23.553 They were not able to speak[br]about their experiences 0:07:23.553,0:07:26.093 under the strong patriarchal society. 0:07:26.643,0:07:31.543 But with democratization [br]of South Korea and the feminist movement 0:07:31.543,0:07:36.823 they started to speak in public [br]for the first time in the 1990s. 0:07:37.318,0:07:42.758 That is when they opened the door to allow[br]the taboo issue of comfort women 0:07:42.758,0:07:46.338 to become an issue discussed [br]in South Korea, Japan, 0:07:46.338,0:07:47.988 and the rest of the world. 0:07:49.321,0:07:51.781 My work started from curiosity. 0:07:52.270,0:07:54.030 I had several questions: 0:07:54.501,0:07:56.841 Why are elderly women still fighting 0:07:56.841,0:07:59.661 for their rights and restoration [br]of their dignity? 0:08:00.243,0:08:04.633 How and why did the United States [br]play a part in reaching this agreement? 0:08:05.141,0:08:07.591 Who truly has power in this world? 0:08:08.566,0:08:13.246 My hope is also to add a spoon [br]of sugar in this salty ocean. 0:08:13.745,0:08:19.485 I would like to seek an appropriate way [br]of honoring the lives of women 0:08:19.715,0:08:23.995 not only the surviving elders [br]but also the many young women 0:08:23.995,0:08:25.665 who were abandoned and murdered 0:08:25.665,0:08:28.675 in the battle field outside [br]of their own country. 0:08:29.030,0:08:32.920 By doing so, I believe [br]we can have a better conversation 0:08:32.920,0:08:37.250 towards sexual and gender-based violence[br]prevailing in our countries. 0:08:39.067,0:08:43.687 So, let us become curious [br]about exploitation in today's world. 0:08:44.007,0:08:47.727 Let us question why the world [br]is the way it is right now. 0:08:48.419,0:08:52.899 Why are some countries rich and powerful[br]while others are not? 0:08:53.406,0:08:57.324 Why are certain populations [br]being discriminated against? 0:08:57.354,0:09:00.524 Why are certain people[br]doing certain jobs in your community? 0:09:01.173,0:09:04.353 Why are there no women in boardrooms? 0:09:04.613,0:09:07.443 Why is your friend[br]being bullied in your classroom? 0:09:07.880,0:09:11.430 Then reach out your hand [br]to people who need your help. 0:09:11.720,0:09:14.570 Your help might be as tiny [br]as a spoon of sugar. 0:09:14.965,0:09:19.945 But if many of us do it together, [br]I think we can change the world. 0:09:20.114,0:09:23.744 Then you'll see that peace [br]actually starts with you. 0:09:23.964,0:09:25.484 Thank you so much. 0:09:25.504,0:09:27.924 (Applause)
