WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, you've just registered for your first MOOC 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you're wondering what to do next. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There are many ways you can succeed in a MOOC. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You must just want to follow along and get a sense of the topic. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You might be doing it for course credit. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You might be doing it to develop a new learning network 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or to help finish that project you're working on. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This video is how I look at success in a Massive Open Online Course. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Let's say you've just registered for a MOOC about thingamajigits. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You've registered at the course site 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you've decided that you're going to commit your time, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but you're trying to figure out where to start. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is five steps to succeed in a MOOC. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You need to orient, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 declare, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 network, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 cluster 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and focus. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 First, you need to orient yourself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Where are the materials, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the links you'll need to use every week, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the times of the live sessions? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Gather these together, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 bookmark them! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You'll find that in some ways, a MOOC is a lot like just being on the Web, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with one big exception: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a MOOC is paced. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There are readings and topics and they are separated into weeks. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 While no one is going to be checking on you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to make sure you read everything, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the materials are there, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and while you don't need to cover everything, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the more you cover, the more you can participate. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The next thing you need to do is declare yourself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You need to have a place for your thoughts and your reflections to live. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It might be a blog that you're writing, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it might be a discussion forum that's part of the course. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Your MOOC will have some way of gathering all the reflections on your course together. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It might be a tag, or some other method. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Let's say your course tag is 'Thingamajigits2011'. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Maybe you already have a blog, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or you can set one up online. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You can write a reaction to one of the readings, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 add a course tag to it and post it to Twitter. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then, probably, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 nothing happens. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 No one grades it, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 no one comments. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You've declared yourself, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but no one seems to have noticed. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You need a network. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You need to follow some other people reflecting on the material 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and make some connections. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Go back and take a look at the communications 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you've been getting from the facilitators. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Do a search for the course tag. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Find some people's work, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 read a few posts and comment on them. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Those connections and your comments are what the course is all about. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Better yet: go back to your spot 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and write a thoughtful reply to someone's questions or concerns. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Tell them about it, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 make connections. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There is a discussion going on 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the discussion is probably what you took this course for. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 After a few weeks, it's probably time to cluster. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 During the first couple of weeks of reading and commenting, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you'll notice that there are a couple of other people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 whose interests in thingamajigits is very close to yours. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You'll find that you're returning to their work more often, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that they're commenting on your work more often, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that you're connecting. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You don't need to connect with everyone. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Find yourself a cluster of people who are focused on what you're interested in, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a group of people for you to work with, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 maybe, even a community that might share ideas 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 after the course is over. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Finally, and this is especially important to me, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you need to focus. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Even with all the positive connections 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the interesting readings, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the learning about 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the interesting readings 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the learning about thingamajigits, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I always find that a little over half-way through an open course, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 my mind starts to wander. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Maybe you're not sure what you're trying to do with the course. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you're not trying to finish the course for credit, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 why are you trying to do it?
