9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, you've just registered for your first MOOC 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and you're wondering what to do next. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There are many ways you can succeed in a MOOC. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You must just want to follow along and get a sense of the topic. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You might be doing it for course credit. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You might be doing it to develop a new learning network 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or to help finish that project you're working on. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This video is how I look at success in a Massive Open Online Course. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Let's say you've just registered for a MOOC about thingamajigits. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You've registered at the course site 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and you've decided that you're going to commit your time, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but you're trying to figure out where to start. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is five steps to succeed in a MOOC. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You need to orient, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 declare, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 network, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 cluster 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and focus. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 First, you need to orient yourself. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Where are the materials, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the links you'll need to use every week, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the times of the live sessions? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Gather these together, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 bookmark them! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You'll find that in some ways, a MOOC is a lot like just being on the Web, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with one big exception: 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a MOOC is paced. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There are readings and topics and they are separated into weeks. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 While no one is going to be checking on you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to make sure you read everything, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the materials are there, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and while you don't need to cover everything, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the more you cover, the more you can participate. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The next thing you need to do is declare yourself. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You need to have a place for your thoughts and your reflections to live. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It might be a blog that you're writing, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it might be a discussion forum that's part of the course. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Your MOOC will have some way of gathering all the reflections on your course together. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It might be a tag, or some other method. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Let's say your course tag is 'Thingamajigits2011'. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Maybe you already have a blog, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or you can set one up online. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You can write a reaction to one of the readings, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 add a course tag to it and post it to Twitter. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And then, probably, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 nothing happens. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 No one grades it, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 no one comments. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You've declared yourself, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but no one seems to have noticed. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You need a network. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You need to follow some other people reflecting on the material 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and make some connections. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Go back and take a look at the communications 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you've been getting from the facilitators. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Do a search for the course tag. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Find some people's work, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 read a few posts and comment on them. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Those connections and your comments are what the course is all about. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Better yet: go back to your spot 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and write a thoughtful reply to someone's questions or concerns. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Tell them about it, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 make connections. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There is a discussion going on 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the discussion is probably what you took this course for. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 After a few weeks, it's probably time to cluster. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 During the first couple of weeks of reading and commenting, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you'll notice that there are a couple of other people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 whose interests in thingamajigits is very close to yours. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You'll find that you're returning to their work more often, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that they're commenting on your work more often, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that you're connecting. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You don't need to connect with everyone. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Find yourself a cluster of people who are focused on what you're interested in, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a group of people for you to work with, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 maybe, even a community that might share ideas 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 after the course is over. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Finally, and this is especially important to me, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you need to focus. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Even with all the positive connections 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the interesting readings, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the learning about 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the interesting readings 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the learning about thingamajigits, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I always find that a little over half-way through an open course, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 my mind starts to wander. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Maybe you're not sure what you're trying to do with the course. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you're not trying to finish the course for credit, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 why are you trying to do it?
