9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Talk meister] Grab a seat please, there's[br]lots of seats around here, or there. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's my pleasure to introduce our current[br]and new DPL, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Neil McGovern for his annual bits from[br]the DPL 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Applause] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Neil] Thanks very much, hi everyone. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm aware that this talk is due to cut in[br]to lunch so I'll try and keep it slightly 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 ... in to dinner, so I'll keep it slightly[br]more refined [laughter] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so people can get their food early. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Hopefully everyone's ok with that anyway. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm also kind of glad that it's in this[br]slot when it was originally proposed 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I got my initial time slot it was[br]going to be a 9am slot just after the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 cheese and wine party so I [laughter] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 probably wouldn't expect quite so many[br]people as we have here today. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, welcome everyone, this final day of[br]the open weekend. Anyone who isn't a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 regular person, hi and welcome to Debian! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Welcome to the huge Debian family which[br]is certainly growing all the time and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is something that's really good to see. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's quite fantastic that there's just so[br]many people involved, especially this year 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When I last checked the stats I think we[br]had 383 people who had so far checked in 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 slightly less than for DebConf 7, but I'm[br]certain... [laughter] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm certain over the next few days that'll[br]go up and definitely surpass us. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I just want to remind everyone what the[br]size of the project we are. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's such a huge effort, one of the[br]biggest open source and free software 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 projects in the world. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Combining around 1000 developers, a few[br]thousand maintainers and contributors as 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 well, and also our users. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's really a huge effort that we manage[br]to still be here after 22 years and still 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 be going strong. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Hopefully a DebConf in future will look[br]a little bit like that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think the orga team might be slightly[br]more stressed if we end up with numbers 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but what a fantastic thing. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Also over the last few years we've had 42[br]new project members have joined us. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is over the last year, we've had all[br]these people. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Huge welcome to everyone there. [Applause] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Especially one or two on there which I[br]decided to get back into doing application 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 management, especially for our non-[br]uploading developers as well, which has 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 been a huge boost to really grow where[br]we're going. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Also welcome back. I've noticed a few[br]people this year who I haven't seen in a 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 few years, so stand up if you've been away[br]for a few years and you're returning 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I know there's certainly some people,[br]excellent, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Tolimar? [laughter] There he is![br][Applause] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Kris Rose? Is he here? [points] Excellent. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Was active before I even joined Debian,[br]and essentially has come back again, so 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it's great to see everyone back and thanks[br]very much for remembering us. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There's been a few new people as well. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Very, very new people who I haven't kinda[br]seen around before in previous DebConfs 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Where did all these children come from?[br]I think there must have been something... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [laughter] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think the Switzerland DebConf, there[br]might have been something in the water, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because it's suddenly been a huge... it's[br]absolutely fantastic to see not only 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 our usual developers around, but their[br]families as well, and new people being 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 introduced to Debian and to technology. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The TecKids workshops I think are[br]absolutely fantastic initiative I think 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that really helps broaden Debian and what[br]we do. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, when I first became DPL, I always knew[br]Debian was a big thing in free software, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the communities and things we do. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I went along to my running club 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we went for a run, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 went to the pub afterwards as you do in[br]the UK, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you can't have sport without excessive[br]alcohol consumption afterwards so it seems 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and about 7 or 8 people all came up to me 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and said "Hey, congratulations on being[br]DPL, I'm going to buy you a pint!", which 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [laughter] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which is great 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So if anyone wants to run for DPL you get[br]free beer, this is a good thing. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But it did really impress on me that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Debian's a big deal, it's a really huge[br]deal. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you have a look at some of the latest[br]server stats for web servers, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Debian's number one. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's about 32% of Linux distributions, and[br]and if you combine Ubuntu as well, and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 all our derivatives, we're about 62% of[br]all linux servers out there 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Basically Debian really does run the world 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Not only that, but the amount of embedded[br]devices that Debian's involved with 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 from, as mentioned before, the HP talk,[br]running huge teleco systems 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to assistive devices. I know Andy's around[br]somewhere. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That product is essentially being based on[br]Debian and it's a speak and spell type 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 device. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's for people who can't talk. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You have a little keyboard, you type in[br]what you want to say, it has predictive 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 technology in there, and then it gives[br]people a voice. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Debian is literally being used to give[br]people voices who can't speak. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is the sort of impact that Debian[br]have, and free software can have 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on the world. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A few things happened, certainly over the[br]last year. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Apparently we released. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I was only DPL for about a week, but I'm[br]going to take credit for this 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 like any good politician, anyway.[br][laughter] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I've already had a stable release. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This has hugely welcomed. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I don't know if anyone followed the DevOps[br]Reactions tumblr page, but they were 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 following along and huge cheers from[br]everyone when Debian releases. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It is a big deal. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Strangely I also saw a press release that[br]that said they're 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 having a party to celebrate the release[br]of Debian 8 at Linux Fest North West, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But this press release was from Microsoft[br][laughter] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I thought it might be a spoof at first,[br]but I diligently checked the certificates 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and domains and made sure it went back. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think people, certainly large[br]organisations are realising now that this 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 open source, free software thing isn't[br]going away 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This isn't something that they can just[br]ignore, or they can fight against. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is something that they have to[br]embrace 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Certainly for someone like Microsoft to[br]throw away a load of cake and do a press 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 release because Debian's released is[br]something I never thought I'd see when I 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 first joined the Debian Project. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We've had some new good things which have[br]started recently as well 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Fantastic areas if anyone knows what this[br]might be for a current initiative that's 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 going on? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Picture of four similar potted plants] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I was trying to do reproducible builds. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 They all sort of look the same, so near[br]enough [laughter] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's the nearest I could find on Flickr to[br]something being reproducible. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 These are all CC by the way. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So this is perhaps a bit of a better slide[br]to explain just how impressive it is 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where we've got. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I don't know if everyone here's aware of[br]reproducible builds and what this is 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 trying to do, and the importance of it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [XXXX 8:49 XXXX]
