0:00:03.780,0:00:04.780 Hello! 0:00:04.780,0:00:08.069 Welcome to a brand new episode of Make, Thrift,[br]Buy, the show where you guys send in cool 0:00:08.069,0:00:11.680 things you found on the internet and then[br]I do my best to recreate them! 0:00:11.680,0:00:13.820 So first off – show of hands if you love[br]puns. 0:00:13.820,0:00:14.820 GUYS. 0:00:14.820,0:00:18.900 Today’s challenge, sent to me by Norie,[br]is probably one of my favourite Make Thrift 0:00:18.900,0:00:20.570 Buy suggestions so far. 0:00:20.570,0:00:21.570 It’s a HAND. 0:00:21.570,0:00:22.570 BAG. 0:00:22.570,0:00:23.570 A hand. 0:00:23.570,0:00:24.570 Bag. 0:00:24.570,0:00:25.560 Get it? 0:00:25.560,0:00:26.750 The whole item is a pun. 0:00:26.760,0:00:27.760 It’s so beautiful. 0:00:27.760,0:00:32.320 The original design comes from a Japanese[br]brand called MerryJenny from a year-old collection 0:00:32.320,0:00:37.140 – so unless you live in Japan, and time-travel[br]back a year ago, or you buy a cheap wholesale 0:00:37.140,0:00:41.659 knockoff of this bag – which, actually no,[br]not even that’s available anymore – well, 0:00:41.659,0:00:44.829 this item is pretty much impossible to get[br]your hands on. 0:00:44.829,0:00:48.379 Luckily, I’m pretty handy when it comes[br]to DIY, so I'm pretty sure we can make this 0:00:48.379,0:00:49.510 for ourselves. 0:00:49.510,0:00:50.551 Fingers crossed we nail it! 0:00:50.551,0:00:53.809 This, and more puns, await you in this tutorial. 0:00:53.809,0:00:54.909 So let’s get started. 0:00:54.909,0:00:58.800 So before we start I just want to say, I did[br]pretty much everything about this project 0:00:58.800,0:01:00.900 pretty much backwards, and for that reason 0:01:00.900,0:01:02.809 it took me two frickken DAYS to complete, 0:01:02.809,0:01:05.990 but if you do this project in a much more[br]logical way than I did then it will probably 0:01:05.990,0:01:07.670 take you about 3-4 hours. 0:01:07.670,0:01:09.390 Just do as I say, not as I do. 0:01:09.390,0:01:12.950 Anyway with that said, the first thing I did[br]was to collect up my fabrics. 0:01:12.950,0:01:19.280 Both fabrics are woven (which means, non-stretchy)[br]cottons which are mid-to-heavy weight – like 0:01:19.280,0:01:20.729 linen consistency. 0:01:20.729,0:01:24.909 The black cotton will make up the bag portion[br]of the tote, and this purpley-pink fabric 0:01:24.909,0:01:27.380 will make up the straps and the hands of the[br]bag. 0:01:27.380,0:01:31.289 The first thing that I did was to cut 3 rectangles[br]out of my fabrics. 0:01:31.289,0:01:35.420 The two straps are both 42 inches long and[br]6 inches wide. 0:01:35.420,0:01:39.329 I wanted these to be LONGER than the length[br]of the straps on the original bag, because 0:01:39.329,0:01:41.409 I like my tote bags to have longer straps. 0:01:41.409,0:01:45.049 The bag fabric is 36 inches long and 16 inches[br]wide. 0:01:45.049,0:01:47.520 So first, I’m going to make a simple tote[br]bag. 0:01:47.520,0:01:51.360 To do this, I folded the bag fabric in half[br]length-ways, put pins through both layers 0:01:51.360,0:01:54.619 to hold them together, and then I sewed down[br]the sides like this. 0:01:54.619,0:01:59.219 Next, with the bag still inside-out, I’m[br]going to “box” the two bottom corners. 0:01:59.219,0:02:03.500 To do this, first I cut away some of the excess[br]fabric at the seam, about 2 inches worth, 0:02:03.500,0:02:07.820 and then I pulled the corner out like this,[br]and then I folded this bottom corner so that 0:02:07.820,0:02:10.890 the side seam ends up right in the middle[br]of the corner. 0:02:10.890,0:02:15.510 Then, I drew a straight line 2 inches up from[br]the corner point to make a triangle. 0:02:15.510,0:02:17.530 Then, I sewed straight across here. 0:02:17.530,0:02:22.180 After this corner was sewn, I chopped off[br]the corner close to the stitches, repeated 0:02:22.180,0:02:24.610 this on the other side, and I ended up with[br]this. 0:02:24.610,0:02:28.310 The bottom of the bag will now look really[br]nice when it’s turned the right way around. 0:02:28.310,0:02:32.920 While the bag was still inside out, I folded[br]the top down about 1 and a half inches, and 0:02:32.920,0:02:35.600 then I sewed all the way around the top, to[br]make a hem. 0:02:38.120,0:02:42.959 To make the straps, I laid each one on my[br]ironing-board, and first I folded them like 0:02:42.959,0:02:46.120 this, bringing the edges in to meet at the[br]centre. 0:02:46.120,0:02:49.760 I ironed these folds in place, all the way[br]down the length of the strap. 0:02:49.760,0:02:54.459 Then, I folded THIS in half, and then I ironed[br]the whole strap flat. 0:02:54.459,0:02:56.099 And then I repeated this for the other strap. 0:02:56.099,0:02:59.570 Now unfortunately, I didn’t have a thread[br]that matched the colour of my fabric, so I 0:02:59.570,0:03:02.240 chose this pale grey as a nice, subtle contrast. 0:03:02.240,0:03:07.580 Then, I folded down the end of each strap[br]like this, and I sewed a box shape down the 0:03:07.580,0:03:11.360 end, and then I sewed down both sides of each[br]strap like this. 0:03:16.460,0:03:19.240 And this is what each finished strap looks[br]like. 0:03:19.250,0:03:23.909 Next, I placed the straps approximately where[br]I wanted them to go on the bag, but I didn’t 0:03:23.909,0:03:24.909 sew them on yet. 0:03:24.909,0:03:29.319 And this is the point where I started doing[br]EVERYTHING backwards – because I decided 0:03:29.319,0:03:33.540 that I would try and sew the hands directly[br]onto the bag itself, which I later realised 0:03:33.540,0:03:34.879 was not the best thing to do. 0:03:34.879,0:03:39.150 Anyway, to get the right size for each of[br]the hands, I lined up this fabric underneath 0:03:39.150,0:03:42.770 the strap, and I drew a hand shape on to it[br]with chalk. 0:03:42.770,0:03:47.989 Then I folded this fabric over on itself once,[br]and then twice, so that there were a total 0:03:47.989,0:03:49.989 of 4 layers of fabric underneath. 0:03:49.989,0:03:54.629 I stuck some pins into the hand shape to stop[br]the fabric from moving, and then I cut out 0:03:54.629,0:03:56.530 all 4 hands at once. 0:03:56.530,0:04:00.100 SO, this is the bit you hands-down SHOULD[br]NOT follow. 0:04:00.100,0:04:04.870 I sewed the hands down directly onto my tote[br]bag in the positions that I wanted them, BUT 0:04:04.870,0:04:10.400 you should just sew them directly onto iron-on[br]patches – they’re these guys – instead. 0:04:10.400,0:04:14.670 All the sewing still happens in the same way[br]as I do here, so I’ll show you how I sewed 0:04:14.670,0:04:19.440 up the hands, but I highly recommend, from[br]my own firsthand experience, that you either 0:04:19.440,0:04:24.310 sew these onto scrap fabric or iron on patches,[br]and NOT directly on to the tote bag. 0:04:24.310,0:04:28.940 So, I attached each hand to the fabric underneath[br]by first throwing it into an embroidery hoop 0:04:28.940,0:04:32.370 – and this is totally optional, I just wanted[br]to keep the fabric underneath taut – and 0:04:32.370,0:04:36.961 then using a very short zig-zag stitch - here[br]is me reducing the length of my zig-zag stitch 0:04:36.961,0:04:41.041 to basically nothing - I went around the edges[br]of each hand like this. 0:04:47.020,0:04:48.620 So that gave me this. 0:04:48.630,0:04:53.330 Then, I stitched on the fingernails on in[br]a similar way, using a wide zig zag stitch 0:04:53.330,0:04:57.090 in contrasting colours – I used purple and[br]red for the nailpolish - 0:04:57.090,0:05:01.960 And this is where we really ran into trouble,[br]because the repeated zig-zag stitching caused 0:05:01.960,0:05:06.500 the fabric to pinch and bunch up around the[br]edges of the hand applique, which I didn't 0:05:06.500,0:05:08.530 think looked particularly good. 0:05:08.530,0:05:14.080 So I decided to scrap this bag, but I saved[br]the hands on it and turned them into PATCHES 0:05:14.080,0:05:18.080 – and I basically made this patches exactly[br]in the same way as I did 0:05:18.080,0:05:20.140 in my alien t-shirt DIY. 0:05:20.150,0:05:24.180 So first, I grabbed my fabric glue and I painted[br]a thin line of glue around the edges, close 0:05:24.180,0:05:25.440 to the stitches. 0:05:25.440,0:05:28.120 This will stop the fabric from fraying when[br]I cut them out. 0:05:28.120,0:05:32.000 And then, I cut the hands out of the fabric,[br]really close to those zig-zag stitches. 0:05:32.000,0:05:36.310 I then placed each hand down on top of an[br]iron-on patch – It was a LITTLE bit too 0:05:36.310,0:05:40.130 small for the patch, but I made it work – and[br]I sewed them on to the patches right around 0:05:40.130,0:05:41.130 the edges. 0:05:41.130,0:05:45.910 Then I cut all of this out, around the hand’s[br]outline – and I’ve got myself a hand patch. 0:05:45.910,0:05:48.500 I repeated this for all the others to give[br]myself 4 hand patches. 0:05:48.500,0:05:51.639 You gotta hand it to me - I improvised pretty[br]well there. 0:05:51.639,0:05:56.500 So then, I started the tote again from scratch[br]– BUT FIRST, I’m going to apply the hands 0:05:56.500,0:06:01.139 up both ends like this, each matching pair[br]about 2 and a half inches away from the top 0:06:01.139,0:06:03.850 edge of the fabric, by ironing them on. 0:06:03.850,0:06:07.530 And once they were ironed on, I made the bag[br]exactly in the same way as I did the first 0:06:07.530,0:06:11.580 time around – folded it in half, sewed down[br]the sides, boxed the corners, sewed a hem 0:06:11.580,0:06:15.390 around the top, and I’ve now got a bag with[br]hands on it, and all I have to do is to sew 0:06:15.390,0:06:16.390 on the straps. 0:06:16.390,0:06:22.020 I attached each strap to one pair of matching[br]hands, like this, sewing them on using two 0:06:22.020,0:06:24.420 lines of straight stitches here and here. 0:06:24.420,0:06:27.960 After repeating this on the other side I now[br]have a hand bag. 0:06:27.960,0:06:29.490 So, how does it look? 0:06:29.490,0:06:30.750 How did I go? 0:06:31.340,0:06:34.480 (Music plays) 0:06:53.820,0:06:55.509 I LOVE how this turned out. 0:06:55.509,0:06:59.879 This is my new favourite shopping bag, my[br]new favourite pool bag – I love it. 0:06:59.879,0:07:03.510 I’m probably going to add a small pocket[br]on the inside as well, might even do a lined 0:07:03.510,0:07:07.630 version – but because this was the first[br]ever tote bag I'd ever made, I wanted to start 0:07:07.630,0:07:08.630 with the basics. 0:07:08.630,0:07:09.810 We can get fancy later on. 0:07:09.810,0:07:12.410 Anyway, my conclusion is:[br](scissor-snipping sound effect) 0:07:12.410,0:07:14.430 THUMBS UP if you liked this tutorial! 0:07:14.430,0:07:18.240 This bag is pretty cute(ical), don't you think!
