0:00:00.000,0:00:02.560 ♫ Make Thrift Buy intro music ♫ 0:00:03.600,0:00:05.769 Hi everyone, and welcome to episode 3 of Make 0:00:05.769,0:00:09.200 Thrift Buy. A show where you guys send me[br]clothes that you found online and I try to 0:00:09.200,0:00:12.360 re-create them.[br]Today’s challenge was suggested by Victoria 0:00:12.360,0:00:17.010 Valenzuela, and it’s of this awesome Pin[br]Up Girl Clothing Sailor Dress, which retails 0:00:17.010,0:00:20.750 for $132 dollars. Now I was lucky enough to[br]find this dress at the thrift store the other 0:00:20.750,0:00:25.110 day, which I thought could be used for this[br]project. So…I thought I’d give this one 0:00:25.110,0:00:28.000 a go![br]The first thing I did was to make a cut out 0:00:28.000,0:00:29.300 on the front of the dress, just like the one[br]on the picture. 0:00:29.300,0:00:35.520 I drew the cutout on with chalk, and I hacked[br]away at this with some scissors. Then I folded 0:00:35.520,0:00:40.809 all the raw edges back inside the dress about[br]half an inch, and I stuck some pins in to 0:00:40.809,0:00:46.100 hold it all in place.[br]I then very carefully sewed around the cut 0:00:46.100,0:00:49.629 out really close to the edges. Using a straight[br]stitch but pulling the fabric slightly as 0:00:49.629,0:00:53.339 I went because the dress material was slightly[br]stretchy, and I didn’t want the stitches 0:00:53.339,0:00:56.440 to snap, andddd I ended up with a pretty nice[br]looking cut out. 0:00:56.440,0:01:01.129 Now, there is a distinct lack of anchors on[br]my dress. For this I decided I would make 0:01:01.129,0:01:07.049 a stencil so all my anchor shapes would be[br]the same size, and…I totally forgot what 0:01:07.049,0:01:13.130 anchors looked like. Thank you Google Images![br]First I drew an anchor onto some cardboard, 0:01:13.130,0:01:18.420 and then attempted to cut it out precisely.[br]Which is actually A LOT harder than you would 0:01:18.420,0:01:24.049 think! A good 20 minutes later and I had a[br]real dodgy looking stencil, but…it let me 0:01:24.049,0:01:27.390 trace the basic shape of an anchor so I figured[br]it would be good enough. 0:01:27.390,0:01:30.770 Then I went to the craft store to get some[br]fabric paint, but the guy at the craft store 0:01:30.770,0:01:35.009 actually recommended this Posca pen would[br]work fine on fabric. I was a bit dubious that 0:01:35.009,0:01:38.679 it would show up well on black fabric, but[br]I also thought that using a pen rather than 0:01:38.679,0:01:44.310 paint would be easier so I trusted him and[br]I went for it. And to my amazement, it worked! 0:01:44.310,0:01:49.679 So I did one, and then I just repeated this[br]all over my dress. 0:01:49.679,0:01:55.539 Soo…Five hours and hundreds of anchors later[br]and a shape of an anchor is basically etched 0:01:55.539,0:01:59.530 into my brain. I’m not going to be forgetting[br]what an anchor looks like any time soon. So 0:01:59.530,0:02:03.850 apparently to set the marker into the fabric[br]you iron it at a high temperature without 0:02:03.850,0:02:09.789 steam on the reverse side of the fabric. So[br]I did that. Now, because I have terrible foresight, 0:02:09.789,0:02:13.570 I drew my hundreds of anchors before testing[br]that they would actually stay on the fabric 0:02:13.570,0:02:14.980 when washed.[br]Yeah… 0:02:14.980,0:02:20.570 BUT, to test whether this pen works on fabric[br]I popped the dress into my washing machine. 0:02:20.570,0:02:27.570 I’m really not happy about this.[br][washing machine noises] 0:02:28.000,0:02:35.000 Please be okayyy[br]Yep, and…heaps of them faded. Like…heaps 0:02:40.380,0:02:47.230 are basically gone. Yeah…[br]Okay so…It’s actually not that bad. As 0:02:47.230,0:02:50.810 the dress dried a lot of them became a lot[br]clearer to see, and most stayed on pretty 0:02:50.810,0:02:54.880 well. So, I just went back over the faded[br]ones with the Posca pen again, and I made 0:02:54.880,0:02:58.760 a mental note to myself to only ever gently[br]hand wash the dress in the future. 0:02:58.760,0:03:02.560 So back on track, my dress had a black tie[br]in the front, whereas the one from Pin up 0:03:02.560,0:03:07.260 Girl Clothing has a white tie. So I simply[br]snipped off the black ties. Then I used these 0:03:07.260,0:03:11.980 pieces to make a stencil for two white tie[br]pieces. I added a seam allowance, and also 0:03:11.980,0:03:15.580 made them a little bit longer.[br]I cut out four of these, then pinned them 0:03:15.580,0:03:20.620 together two at a time, and sewed using a[br]straight stitch all away around the edges; 0:03:20.620,0:03:25.940 leaving the bottom edge open so I could turn[br]them the right way around. Then I attached 0:03:25.940,0:03:31.480 these to the front of the dress and sewed[br]them on. 0:03:31.480,0:03:37.680 So the real question is…[br]How did I go? 0:03:37.680,0:03:44.680 ♫ music plays ♫[br]So in conclusion, if you’re lucky enough 0:03:47.260,0:03:51.980 to find this style of dress in a thrift store—[br]then this something you can really easily 0:03:51.980,0:03:55.140 make.[br][Scissor snipping and zipper noise effects] 0:03:55.140,0:03:57.300 So my version by Pin Up Girl Clothing: $132.[br]My version: $8. 0:03:57.300,0:04:03.200 Now I do have to say that the one on Pin Up[br]Girl Clothing is probably quite a bit nicer, 0:04:03.200,0:04:08.840 with a full skirt, and inbuilt pockets. Plus[br]my one is black, theirs is navy, BUT I think 0:04:08.840,0:04:15.840 for $8 this is a pretty decent replica.[br]So let me know what you think, and keep those 0:04:16.220,0:04:18.260 suggestions coming, and I’ll see you all[br]next time! 0:04:18.260,0:04:22.240 ♫ Outro music ♫
