0:00:00.000,0:00:02.840 (Sigh) Yep. I'm actually doing this. 0:00:03.140,0:00:06.220 [Make Thrift Buy Intro Music] 0:00:06.220,0:00:10.800 Hey! Welcome to Make Thrift Buy, the show[br]where you send in suggestions of clothes that you've 0:00:10.800,0:00:14.340 seen on the Internet and then I try my best[br]to recreate them. 0:00:14.340,0:00:20.340 So a LOT of you have sent me messages in the[br]past few weeks asking me to recreate the "Virgin 0:00:20.340,0:00:26.039 Killing Sweater". Appppparently this sweater[br]recently blew up on Twitter in Japan, and 0:00:26.039,0:00:31.939 later it was also picked up by Western major[br]media outlets in their monthly "isn't Japan 0:00:31.939,0:00:35.800 so craaaazy" stories, although I am pretty[br]sure it's actually manufactured and sold in 0:00:35.800,0:00:37.580 a Chinese store called Seventy Three. 0:00:37.580,0:00:43.530 It's also apparently received the name "virgin[br]killer" from a Japanese person on Twitter 0:00:43.530,0:00:51.640 because it's so erotic....that it kills...virgins?[br]Look everything about this is a little bit 0:00:51.640,0:00:52.950 iffy; I'm just here to sew. 0:00:52.950,0:00:57.321 Oh yeah. Important thing to note about this[br]sweater: It's supposed to be so low cut at 0:00:57.321,0:01:03.079 the back that it shows off "butt cleavage".[br]Now I didn't know butt cleavage was a thing 0:01:03.079,0:01:09.680 until today. And in attempting to keep this[br]video PG I'm not going to show you the photos 0:01:09.680,0:01:15.010 of people wearing it where you can see their[br]butt cleavage, nor will I be showing my own 0:01:15.010,0:01:18.901 butt cleavage if I do make it successfully,[br]but if you want to see this worn on actual 0:01:18.901,0:01:26.650 human beings (or a bunch of anime girls or[br]my little pony characters, which, I pre-warn 0:01:26.650,0:01:31.940 you, you will not be able to unsee) there's[br]a Not Safe For Work page on knowyourmeme.com 0:01:31.940,0:01:35.160 all about this sweater with about 300 pictures. 0:01:35.160,0:01:37.670 Anyway, let's try and recreate this. 0:01:37.670,0:01:41.810 Well, I started out by finding a suitable[br]sweater at the thrift store. This one was 0:01:41.810,0:01:47.850 $15 and it's a men’s size large. Most importantly,[br]it has a turtle neck, and it's also quite 0:01:47.850,0:01:52.270 long on me – it ends about where my shorts[br]end so it’s the perfect length for this 0:01:52.270,0:01:53.270 DIY. 0:01:53.270,0:01:55.950 Anyway, off with the arms! We sure won’t[br]be needing those! 0:01:55.950,0:02:01.070 Oh yeah, guys, I should just stop here, I’ve[br]created such a sexy look already. 0:02:01.070,0:02:05.460 Anyway next I wanted to make it fit more snugly,[br]so it’s time to take in the sides. 0:02:05.460,0:02:11.030 I pinched the material at the sides until[br]it was more snug on my body, estimating how 0:02:11.030,0:02:12.590 much I’d need to take it in by. 0:02:12.590,0:02:16.970 Then I turned the sweater inside out, and[br]I laid it out flat, and I drew straight lines 0:02:16.970,0:02:22.250 down both sides using some chalk. And I also[br]stuck some pins through both layers of fabric 0:02:22.250,0:02:26.770 to help keep them together through the next[br]step, because knitted fabric STRETCHES like 0:02:26.770,0:02:27.770 nothing else. 0:02:27.770,0:02:32.130 In the next step, I’m going to be using[br]my overlocker to SERGE down these two lines. 0:02:32.130,0:02:36.250 So here is some actually useful tips about[br]sewing with knitted fabrics. 0:02:36.250,0:02:41.530 So this is an overlocker, also known as Serger[br]- stickers available from DFTBA.com - and 0:02:41.530,0:02:48.370 before serging any kind of fabric, especially[br]bulky, knitted fabric like I'm using here, 0:02:48.370,0:02:56.640 you should adjust the settings on your serger.[br]So I am setting my differential feed to "2", 0:02:56.640,0:03:02.350 which will give me, hopefully, flat seams.[br]If you set it to this, we're going to get 0:03:02.350,0:03:05.260 real wavy seams, so it needs to be set to[br]"2". 0:03:05.260,0:03:11.650 I'm also setting my stitch... length? Yes.[br]This is length. I'm also setting my stitch 0:03:11.650,0:03:17.610 length to the, uh, longest length possible.[br]And finally I am using nylon threads because 0:03:17.610,0:03:20.680 they are stretchier.[br]I worked out all of these adjustments by reading 0:03:20.680,0:03:26.360 the manual for my machine - your machine will[br]probably be a bit different, so a good idea 0:03:26.360,0:03:29.530 is to read the manual.[br]But the most important one is this one here, 0:03:29.530,0:03:33.490 the differential feed.[br]And I practiced on the fabric that I cut off 0:03:33.490,0:03:40.030 from the arms until I got a nice, flat seam.[br]See, this is one of my first attempts - that 0:03:40.030,0:03:42.120 is what I did not want. 0:03:42.120,0:03:46.490 So, after doing all that I put the sweater[br]into the serger and I serged down those lines 0:03:46.490,0:03:47.490 I drew earlier! 0:03:47.490,0:03:52.900 And, guys, I actually managed to sew a pretty[br]flat seam on my sweater there! It was still 0:03:52.900,0:03:58.150 the tiniest bit ruffled but hey, it’s pretty[br]good – because sewing together two layers 0:03:58.150,0:04:01.570 of chunky knit is really difficult, so I'm[br]pretty proud of myself. 0:04:01.570,0:04:05.380 Okay so then I decided to do the rest of the[br]measuring by putting my sweater on this dress 0:04:05.380,0:04:09.069 form, because I was sick of how itchy and[br]hot the sweater was making me. 0:04:09.069,0:04:12.580 So the thing I did next was to essentially[br]trace those cut-outs directly onto the sweater 0:04:12.580,0:04:17.660 using some chalk. Obviously, using a dressform[br]also makes this process somewhat easier than 0:04:17.660,0:04:21.030 trying to trace it out while wearing it on[br]myself. 0:04:21.030,0:04:26.500 So once I had drawn on those cutouts I…[br]cut them out. Using some fabric scissors. 0:04:26.500,0:04:31.730 I cut about 1 inch outside the chalk lines,[br]to give myself some hemming allowance. 0:04:31.730,0:04:36.220 And when that was done… it looked like this.[br]And it’s looking quite similar to the original 0:04:36.220,0:04:38.690 at this point, if I do say so myself! 0:04:38.690,0:04:43.310 The next step was to hem all the raw edges[br]to give them a neat finish, which I did by 0:04:43.310,0:04:47.180 first going all the way around the raw edges[br]with my overlocker... 0:04:47.180,0:04:51.639 And then folding the hem up inside the garment[br]about ½ an inch and using a stretch stitch 0:04:51.639,0:04:56.540 to go over the top, and using a walking foot[br]attachment as well. These two techniques stop 0:04:56.540,0:04:59.060 the hem from ruffling on the knitted fabric. 0:04:59.060,0:05:04.480 So this is what it looked like when I was[br]done, and ummhhh... I realised at this point 0:05:04.480,0:05:08.930 that I had been a bit too enthusiastic with[br]those side cutouts... 0:05:08.930,0:05:13.120 See now, on this mannequin, it looks like[br]there’d just be “tasteful” amounts of 0:05:13.120,0:05:14.140 sideboob, right? 0:05:14.140,0:05:19.639 But unfortunately this dress form is not exactly[br]the same size as me. SO when I actually tried 0:05:19.640,0:05:22.500 this on – uhh… how to say this delicately… 0:05:22.500,0:05:24.620 My boobs spilled out the sides. 0:05:24.740,0:05:29.680 This is why I probably should have tried it[br]on before cutting it out. Welp. Too late now. 0:05:29.680,0:05:34.470 It’s time to try and salvage this project.[br]Which I did by grabbing the one sleeve that 0:05:34.470,0:05:38.630 I hadn’t already butchered by practising[br]on it before with my serger, and I cut this 0:05:38.630,0:05:42.960 sleeve in half, then I placed it underneath[br]the side cut outs like this, to give a little 0:05:42.960,0:05:47.271 bit more coverage at the front. I pinned it[br]on, repeating this for the other side, and 0:05:47.271,0:05:51.150 then I sewed these extra pieces on like THIS,[br]again using a stretch stitch. 0:05:51.150,0:05:57.370 Next, the fabric also went a little bit more…[br]floopy? Than I expected after making the cutouts, 0:05:57.370,0:06:01.300 and it also gaped a bit at the sides, so to[br]fix this, I turned the garment inside out, 0:06:01.300,0:06:05.860 laid it flat like this… and essentially[br]I made this part tighter by sewing a line 0:06:05.860,0:06:07.800 like this, through both layers of fabric. 0:06:07.800,0:06:10.900 The very LAST step was adding a tie at the[br]back. 0:06:10.900,0:06:15.770 I’m not sure why this tie exists on the[br]original, I think that it’s probably just 0:06:15.770,0:06:20.229 purely decorative – in any case, it’s[br]definitely not going to be functional on my 0:06:20.229,0:06:21.229 backless sweater. 0:06:21.229,0:06:25.949 So first I estimated how long each tie would[br]be by pretending that my measuring tape was 0:06:25.949,0:06:28.460 the tie, and getting the approximate length[br]from this. 0:06:28.460,0:06:32.380 I cut out two long pieces of cotton fabric[br]in a matching colour, each of them measuring 0:06:32.380,0:06:34.790 33 by 2 and half inches. 0:06:34.790,0:06:38.820 And I folded both in half lengthways, sewed[br]down this edge, turned them inside out using 0:06:38.820,0:06:43.350 a bodkin, ironed them flat and then sewed[br]down the middle of them like this. 0:06:43.350,0:06:47.650 Finally, I attached them together in one long[br]strap, and then I hand-sewed it onto the back 0:06:47.650,0:06:51.870 of the sweater just underneath the turtleneck…[br]and I tied it into a pretty bow. 0:06:51.870,0:06:57.660 And with that… I was done. So…. Oh man[br]I still can’t believe I’ve made this item 0:06:57.660,0:07:00.350 of clothing… How did I go? 0:07:00.350,0:07:02.120 (dorky music plays) 0:07:02.120,0:07:05.380 Mmpphh!! I wanna take this off NOW! 0:07:05.380,0:07:07.580 (Sigh) but first - some shots. 0:07:07.580,0:07:13.140 This is what it looks like from the front.[br]I'm gunna put pants on to show you the back. 0:07:16.820,0:07:21.580 So we've got the turtleneck at the front,[br]we've got ample side-boob... we have a "V" 0:07:21.580,0:07:27.460 cutout at the butt, waistline here, for a[br]lot of... 0:07:27.460,0:07:28.620 butt cleavage! 0:07:28.640,0:07:33.980 Oh look! We've got some more sideboob there,[br]we've got the tie... that doesn't... function. 0:07:34.080,0:07:41.580 Mmm. Yeah. So, uh, Pfffft. This is, uh, 100%[br]wool! So... and it's, it's summer where I 0:07:41.580,0:07:45.140 live right now![br]I do not feel sexy... at all. 0:07:45.140,0:07:47.540 Mm, baby. I'm so itchy. 0:07:47.540,0:07:51.580 Here's a hot tip for those of you planning[br]on recreating this - not that I particularly 0:07:51.580,0:07:58.790 recommend doing so - use a sweater that's[br]not 100% wool, like maybe, more polyester? 0:07:58.790,0:08:03.699 I couldn't figure out what the original was[br]made of but I'm betting it isn't 100% pure 0:08:03.700,0:08:06.420 wool.[br]Turns out, that's not very comfortable to 0:08:06.420,0:08:07.500 wear! 0:08:07.500,0:08:13.500 And yep, so I'm feeling REALLY uncomfortable[br]and awkward right now... so... uhh... 0:08:13.540,0:08:14.540 END CARD! 0:08:15.860,0:08:17.440 'Kay so I made it. 0:08:20.560,0:08:24.660 [Make Thrift Buy Music ....
