WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So can I get a show of hands how many of you in this room 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 have been on a plane in this past year? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's pretty good. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Well, it turns out that you share that experience 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with more than 3 billion people every year. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And when we put so many people in these metal tubes 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that fly all over the world, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 sometimes, things like this can happen 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you get a disease epidemic. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I first actually got into this topic 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when I heard about the Ebola outbreak last year. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And it turns out that although Ebola spreads through 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 these more range-limited, more tropical routes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's all these other sorts of diseases 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that can be spread through the airplane cabin. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The worst part is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when we take a look at some of the numbers, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's pretty scary. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So with H1N1, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there was this guy who decided to go on the plane 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and in the matter of a single flight, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 actually spread the disease to 17 other people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then there was this other guy with SARS 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who managed to go on a 3-hour flight 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and spread the disease to 22 other people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's not exactly my idea of a great super power. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When we take a look at this, what we also find is that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's very difficult to pre-screen for these diseases. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, when someone actually goes on a plane, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they could be sick 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they could be in this latency period 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in which they could actually have the disease. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And they could, in turn, spread the disease 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to so many other people in the cabin. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And how that actually works is that right now 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we have air coming in from the top of the cabin 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and from the side of the cabin as you can see in the blue. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then also, that air goes out throught hese very efficient filters 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that eliminate 99.97 percent of pathogens near the outlets. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And what happens right now, though, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is that we have this mixing air-flow pattern. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if someone were to actually sneeze, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that air would get swirled around multiple times 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 before it even has a chance to go out through the filter. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I thought, clearly, this is a pretty serious problem. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I didn't have the money to go out and buy a plane, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so I decided to build a computer instead. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It actually turns out that with Computational Fluid Dynamics, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what we're able to do is create these simulations 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that give us higher resulutions 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 than actually physically going in and taking readings in the plane. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And how, essentially, this works is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you would start out with these 2D drawings -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 these are floating around in technical papers around the Internet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I take that and I put it into these 3D-modeling software, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 really building that 3D model. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then I divide that model that I just built into these tiny pieces. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then I tell the computer where the air goes in and out of the cabin, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 throw in a bunch of physics, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and basically sit there and wait until the computer calculates the simulation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So what we get with the conventional cabin is this: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you'll notice the middle person sneezing, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and we go "Splat!", right into people's faces. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's pretty disgusting. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And from the front, you'll notice those two passengers 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 sitting next to the central passenger, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 not exactly having a great time. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And when we take a look at that from the side, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you'll also notice those pathogens 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 spreading across the lenth of the cabin. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The first thing that I thought was, "This is no good." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So I actually conducted more than 32 different simulations 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and ultimately, I came up with this solution right here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is what I call a patent-pending Global Inlet Director. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 With this, we're able to reduce pathogen transmission 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by about 55 times 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and increase fresh air- inhalation by about 190 percent. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So how this actually works is 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we would install this piece of composite material 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 into these existing spots that are already in the plane. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So it's very cost-effective to install 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and we can do this directly overnight. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All we have to do is put a couple of screws in there 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you're good to go. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the results that we get are absolutely amazing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Instead of having those problematic swirling air patterns, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what we have is we can create these walls of air 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that come down in between the passengers 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to create these personalized breathing zones. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So you'll notice that if the middle passenger here 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is sneezing again, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but this time, we're able to effectively push that down 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to the filters for elimination. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the same thing form the side, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we're able to directly push those pathogens down. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So if you take a look again now at the same scenario 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but with this innovation installed, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you'll notice the middle passenger sneezes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and this time, we're pushing that straight down into the outlet 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 before it gets a chance to infect any other people. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So you notice the two passengers sitting next to the middle guy 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are breathing virtually no pathogens at all. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Take a look at that from the side as well, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's a very efficient system. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And in short, with this system, we win. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When we take a look at what this means, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what we also see is that this not only works 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if the middle passenger sneezes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but also if the window seat passenger sneezes 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or if the aisle seat passenger sneezes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And so with this solution, what does this mean for the world? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When we take a look at this from the computer simulation 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 into real life, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we can see from with this 3D model that I built over here 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 essentially using 3D printing, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we can see those same air flow patterns coming down right to the passengers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In the past, the SARS epidemic actually cost the world 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about 40 billion dollars, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and in the future, a big disease outbreak could actually 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 cost the world an excess of 3 trillion dollars. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So before, it used to be that you had to take an airplane 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 out of service for one-to-two months, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 spend tens fo thousands of man hours, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and several million dollars to try to change something. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But now, we're able to install something, essentially overnight, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and see results right away. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So it's really now a matter of taking this through to cetification, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 flight testing, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and going through all of these regulatory approvals processes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but it just really goes to show 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that sometimes the best solutions are the simplest solutions. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And two years ago, even, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 this project would not have happened 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 just because the technology then would not have supported it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But now iwth advanced computing 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and how developed our Internet is, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's really the Golden Era of innovation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And so the question I ask all of you today is, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 why wait? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Together, we can build the future, today. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thanks. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause)
