0:00:02.416,0:00:05.815 Hey folks, this is Brad Stucki, and[br]I'm excited to be here to share 0:00:05.815,0:00:09.067 with you a little bit of the things[br]that I've learned from this particular 0:00:09.067,0:00:13.349 theorist. I signed up for Urie [br]Bronfenbrenner and his 0:00:13.349,0:00:16.666 bioecological theory of child[br]development, and we've talked 0:00:16.666,0:00:19.449 about this a little bit already[br]in class, and so I'm excited to 0:00:19.449,0:00:23.200 build on what we've already[br]talked about. So here we go. 0:00:23.200,0:00:27.216 I'd like to start by sharing a little[br]bit of the overview of what 0:00:27.216,0:00:31.049 Bronfenbrenner taught and [br]what he studied. His work focuses 0:00:31.049,0:00:35.264 on the development of the child[br]with their environment, and so 0:00:35.264,0:00:39.599 it shows how the child interacts[br]with different systems and different 0:00:39.599,0:00:44.948 people, and how it affects them to[br]become who they end up being-- 0:00:44.948,0:00:49.382 who their individual person is.[br]So we'll go ahead and we'll just 0:00:49.382,0:00:53.714 jump right into it. Okay, so the [br]first system is the microsystem. 0:00:53.714,0:00:58.481 This is the most simple. It is the[br]child interactions with their family, 0:00:58.481,0:01:03.897 with their peers, it is their individual,[br]personal relationships that they have 0:01:03.897,0:01:10.745 with one another that shape them[br]into who they are and who they become. 0:01:10.745,0:01:15.629 And so an example of this would be[br]the child learning from their parents 0:01:15.629,0:01:19.926 or from their teachers, it may be them[br]picking up their different social cues, 0:01:19.926,0:01:26.693 their laugh, it could be just observing [br]the parent, or listening to what they say 0:01:26.693,0:01:31.111 and copying those same standards[br]and so it's just the interaction 0:01:31.111,0:01:34.060 between those two-- the child [br]and the parent, or the child and 0:01:34.060,0:01:36.643 their teacher, the child and their[br]friends-- that helps them develop 0:01:36.643,0:01:43.642 into their individual person.[br]Okay, so the next one-- oh, so actually, 0:01:43.642,0:01:48.175 every time we talk about a system[br]I'm just gonna lay down a line that 0:01:48.175,0:01:53.710 has the definition of it, and I'll just[br]reiterate what it says, and so the 0:01:53.710,0:01:57.876 microsystem is just an interaction[br]or support between the individual 0:01:57.876,0:02:00.376 and their direct relationship,[br]like their parents. 0:02:00.376,0:02:04.725 So the next system is the [br]mesosystem, and this one 0:02:04.725,0:02:10.492 is a system of microsystems.[br]So a microsystem that's 0:02:10.492,0:02:15.859 like the parents, the friends,[br]the teachers, and the mesosystem 0:02:15.859,0:02:20.743 is the interaction between these[br]two microsystems. And the results 0:02:20.743,0:02:25.175 of those affects the child positively[br]or negatively. So here's an example 0:02:25.175,0:02:30.841 of the mesosystem. In this post,[br]you see that their friends, and you 0:02:30.841,0:02:33.758 put them together with the parents,[br]like maybe they come over, and if they 0:02:33.758,0:02:37.759 have a negative reaction-- if they[br]disapprove of the friends, results in 0:02:37.759,0:02:41.625 the top part, where the child will[br]be sad, they may have a negative 0:02:41.625,0:02:46.657 development. They're pushing[br]against the parents, maybe have 0:02:46.657,0:02:49.340 negative feelings towards the [br]parents, whereas the bottom, 0:02:49.340,0:02:52.890 if the parents approve of the friends,[br]there's a positive development 0:02:52.890,0:02:55.923 where the child trusts the parents[br]more, trusts the friends more, 0:02:55.923,0:02:59.640 and this is positive all together.[br]And so that's an example of the 0:02:59.640,0:03:07.357 mesosystem and how the different [br]microsystems interact to affect the child. 0:03:07.357,0:03:10.874 And so that's the mesosystem, it's the[br]interaction between different microsystems 0:03:10.874,0:03:19.723 that affect the child. The exosystem[br]is the next step up from being further 0:03:19.723,0:03:24.089 away from the child. And so if you look[br]at the second line, it describes what the 0:03:24.089,0:03:28.140 exosystem is. It is people or places[br]that children may not directly interact 0:03:28.140,0:03:33.340 with, but still impact their lives.[br]And so, an example of this is the 0:03:33.340,0:03:36.456 community or the neighborhood[br]they grow up in, the government, 0:03:36.456,0:03:40.508 the church, their parents' workplace.[br]And certain examples. 0:03:40.508,0:03:46.656 And so the example of an exosystem,[br]the top one is a great example. 0:03:46.656,0:03:52.438 It's a father who is continually[br]passed up for a promotion by 0:03:52.438,0:03:57.155 an indifferent boss at the workplace,[br]who may take it out on his child and 0:03:57.155,0:04:01.858 mistreat them at home. And so the [br]child never interacted with the parent's 0:04:01.858,0:04:06.871 workplace, but received the results[br]of the stress and anger from the parent, 0:04:06.871,0:04:11.654 and so that's what an exosystem is, [br]and the bottom one talks about a 0:04:11.654,0:04:14.105 mother who leaves to go to the [br]military and the child develops 0:04:14.105,0:04:19.005 anxiety, even though she's never[br]been to her parent's workplace, 0:04:19.005,0:04:23.655 doesn't know why the parents are[br]leaving. And so that's the result of 0:04:23.655,0:04:29.070 the exosystem. And so the exosystem[br]is something-- an interaction, setting, 0:04:29.070,0:04:32.471 that does not involve the child but[br]still affects them. 0:04:32.471,0:04:36.755 Okay, and so the next one is the[br]macrosystem, and is described 0:04:36.755,0:04:41.137 as the effects of larger principles[br]defined by the macrosystem. 0:04:41.137,0:04:46.137 And so that's like cultural values,[br]religious values, customs, and laws. 0:04:46.137,0:04:50.087 And I guess also it includes the[br]mass media. 0:04:50.087,0:04:53.786 And so an example of that is culture--[br]culture's a collection of beliefs, 0:04:53.786,0:04:58.620 customs, and art, and people who[br]live in those customs are expected 0:04:58.620,0:05:05.003 to live certain ways. And so the [br]macrosystem affects the child 0:05:05.003,0:05:08.721 because of those cultures,[br]because of where they're 0:05:08.721,0:05:11.587 expected to live, and that [br]affects who they become 0:05:11.587,0:05:15.837 and the development of that[br]child. So like an example I use 0:05:15.837,0:05:19.820 is the societal culture where[br]the father's the breadwinner, 0:05:19.820,0:05:24.436 when that's not really the case[br]it is now, but it still affects the 0:05:24.436,0:05:28.869 child to maybe want to be [br]that breadwinner and to 0:05:28.869,0:05:33.786 not allow his wife to provide[br]for their family. 0:05:33.786,0:05:37.686 And so macrosystem is just the [br]effects of culture, religious beliefs, 0:05:37.686,0:05:42.702 their views and lifestyle of a child,[br]and so it helps develop that child 0:05:42.702,0:05:45.986 to become who they are. 0:05:45.986,0:05:50.951 The last one is the chronosystem,[br]and this one relates to time, 0:05:50.951,0:05:54.787 and so it's the passage of time[br]or the time and era that they live in 0:05:54.787,0:06:00.318 that affects the child. Like war-time,[br]depression, being a 'baby boomer' 0:06:00.318,0:06:07.736 (quote, unquote) to the gen-Z,[br]millennials, and that depiction 0:06:07.736,0:06:11.751 affects how the child is seen and[br]also how they live. 0:06:11.751,0:06:17.884 And like an example of that is[br]the Great Depression. My grandmother 0:06:17.884,0:06:21.067 lived around the time of the [br]Great Depression, right after, 0:06:21.067,0:06:29.764 and she grew up never throwing[br]anything away. Every little use 0:06:29.764,0:06:34.696 of every single item that she bought[br]to use and use until it wore out. 0:06:34.696,0:06:42.829 So that's an example of the chronosystem[br]and how time and era that you live in 0:06:42.829,0:06:47.429 affects who you are and what you[br]become. And so that's chronosystem, 0:06:47.429,0:06:51.762 the effect of time on the child, the [br]influence of time. And so now that we 0:06:51.762,0:06:56.079 understand all this, how does it affect[br]our teaching? And one of the articles 0:06:56.079,0:07:02.112 I found, it says, 'by studying the various[br]ecological systems, Bronfenbrenner's 0:07:02.112,0:07:06.928 ecological systems theory is able to [br]demonstrate the diversity of interrelated 0:07:06.928,0:07:11.295 influences on children's development. [br]Awareness of the contexts that children 0:07:11.295,0:07:16.811 are in can sensitize us to variations[br]in the way children may act in 0:07:16.811,0:07:21.728 different settings.' So as a teacher,[br]as we're aware of how the child's 0:07:21.728,0:07:26.544 development may be influenced[br]by these different systems, we can 0:07:26.544,0:07:31.390 do a better job in teaching and [br]being aware of our different students 0:07:31.390,0:07:34.240 so that we can be the best teacher[br]that we can. That we can give them 0:07:34.240,0:07:37.723 individualized teaching that will [br]help the student. 0:07:37.723,0:07:42.173 And so that's what I got from [br]Bronfenbrenner's theory, 0:07:42.173,0:07:48.006 and hopefully it helps you as well[br]in helping to individualize your 0:07:48.006,0:07:52.872 students' teaching to help them[br]to have the best education and 0:07:52.872,0:07:54.921 development that they can have. 0:07:54.921,0:07:59.539 So here is the bibliography, and[br]I'm excited to hear what you guys 0:07:59.539,0:08:01.741 have to say, so thank you.
