0:00:03.820,0:00:08.010 Hello and welcome to another episode of Make,[br]Thrift, Buy, the show where YOU guys send 0:00:08.010,0:00:12.480 in interesting, weird or mass-produced clothes[br]that you’ve seen on the internet, and then 0:00:12.480,0:00:14.179 I do my best to recreate them. 0:00:14.179,0:00:18.081 Today’s episode has been suggested by a[br]number of you – thank you to Sophie, Jade and 0:00:18.081,0:00:19.310 agus for this suggestion. 0:00:19.310,0:00:23.970 So this is probably the least ridiculous pair[br]of cut-out jeans that I’ve seen so far – have 0:00:23.970,0:00:28.839 you guys seen those “cut out” jeans where[br]the entire front part – and even some of 0:00:28.839,0:00:30.250 the back – is missing? 0:00:30.250,0:00:34.320 I have, because so many of you guys keep SENDING[br]me photos of them. 0:00:34.320,0:00:35.950 And they make me MAD. 0:00:35.950,0:00:42.460 Number 1, because THIS IS SO EASY TO D-I-Y[br]DON'T SPEND $100 ON THESE! 0:00:42.460,0:00:45.539 Literally - get thrift store jeans, cut them[br]with scissors. 0:00:45.539,0:00:46.920 Also what the heck. 0:00:46.920,0:00:49.960 Is the aesthetic to pretend that you’ve[br]been mauled and escaped from a wearwolf or 0:00:49.960,0:00:50.960 something? 0:00:50.960,0:00:53.600 That you’re too poor to have a nice pair[br]of jeans but not really because you've actually 0:00:53.600,0:00:55.090 spent $100 on UNIF for them? 0:00:55.090,0:00:56.090 *FASHION* 0:00:56.090,0:01:00.260 But anyway, today, we’re going to use these[br]as inspiration to make our own pair of heart 0:01:00.260,0:01:01.260 cutout jeans. 0:01:01.260,0:01:04.500 These are originally from a Japanese brand[br]called Fig and Viper but they are no longer 0:01:04.500,0:01:05.500 available anymore. 0:01:05.500,0:01:07.450 So what are we waiting for – let’s get[br]started. 0:01:07.450,0:01:11.410 First, I thrifted myself a pair of fairly[br]loose-fitting jeans – but, you can use any 0:01:11.410,0:01:13.540 jeans that you want for this DIY. 0:01:13.540,0:01:17.380 Next I figured out where I wanted to place[br]my heart cutouts, which is one big one on 0:01:17.380,0:01:21.750 the front HERE, and three smaller hearts on[br]the back down here, here and here. 0:01:21.750,0:01:23.910 Now I’m going to make heart templates. 0:01:23.910,0:01:27.930 Using a bit of scrap paper, I folded it in[br]half, and then drew half a heart onto it like 0:01:27.930,0:01:29.230 this. 0:01:29.230,0:01:33.830 Then I cut this out, and unfolded, I have[br]a perfectly symmetrical heart. 0:01:35.520,0:01:40.140 I made sure that these hearts were the same[br]size as the cutouts that I wanted on the jeans. 0:01:40.149,0:01:44.200 I also put the jeans on, and I marked out[br]exactly where I wanted the cutouts to be using 0:01:44.200,0:01:45.200 some pins. 0:01:45.200,0:01:48.600 Then I turned the jeans inside out, and I[br]made chalk marks where the pins are – I’m 0:01:48.600,0:01:52.399 moving the placement just slightly over to[br]the left to get the cutouts right in the centre 0:01:52.399,0:01:54.290 of the leg – and then I took the pins out. 0:01:54.290,0:01:57.890 Now I’m going to show you how to do just[br]one of the heart cutouts, but this will be 0:01:57.890,0:02:00.399 the same deal for all 4 heart cutouts that[br]I make. 0:02:00.399,0:02:04.580 Now, if you want the heart cutouts to maintain[br]their shape while you're wearing your jeans, 0:02:04.580,0:02:08.270 especially if you're using a loose-fitting[br]pair, then you will definitely want to use 0:02:08.270,0:02:09.270 interfacing. 0:02:09.270,0:02:13.380 This is some light, woven fusible interfacing[br]that you can basically just iron straight 0:02:13.380,0:02:15.140 down onto the wrong side of your fabric. 0:02:15.140,0:02:19.920 I needed the interfacing the be just slightly[br]larger than the cutout, so using the appropriate-sized 0:02:19.920,0:02:24.970 heart template for the cutout that I was doing,[br]I cut a piece of interfacing a bit bigger 0:02:24.970,0:02:25.970 than this heart. 0:02:25.970,0:02:29.770 I rounded-out the edges of the interfacing,[br]and then placed it fusible-side down onto 0:02:29.770,0:02:33.140 the inside of my jeans, in the spot that I[br]wanted my heart cutout to sit. 0:02:33.140,0:02:36.190 The next step was to iron it onto the inside[br]of the jean's leg. 0:02:36.190,0:02:39.200 Now I'm ironing them on two-at-a-time here[br]to save time. 0:02:39.200,0:02:42.580 First I quickly went over the interfacing[br]with the iron to make sure it was stuck down, 0:02:42.580,0:02:46.390 and then got a cotton shirt and I placed this[br]over the top, and I pressed down on this for 0:02:46.390,0:02:47.700 about 30 seconds. 0:02:47.700,0:02:49.980 The interfacing is now stuck onto the jeans. 0:02:49.980,0:02:53.510 So next I placed the heart template directly[br]onto the spot where I wanted the cutout to 0:02:53.510,0:02:56.660 be, and I traced around it, directly onto[br]the interfacing. 0:02:56.660,0:03:02.370 Then, I drew a smaller heart, like this, about[br]5/8ths of an away from the edge of the larger 0:03:02.370,0:03:03.370 heart. 0:03:03.370,0:03:06.530 Then, with a pair of scissors, I cut out the[br]smaller heart, making sure that I was only 0:03:06.530,0:03:11.030 cutting through ONE layer of the jeans, not[br]through both layers, which I did by putting 0:03:11.030,0:03:13.610 my hand inside the jeans to separate the two[br]sides. 0:03:14.150,0:03:18.600 Next, I made little slits around the shape[br]wherever there was a curve, or a point. 0:03:18.600,0:03:23.690 So, I’m going to make little slits that[br]go all the way to the bigger heart’s outline, 0:03:23.690,0:03:26.090 using some scissors, like this. 0:03:26.560,0:03:31.400 These small cuts then let me then fold the[br]fabric back towards the big heart’s outline, 0:03:31.410,0:03:35.380 like this. 0:03:35.380,0:03:41.810 After folding the pieces back, I put some[br]pins through it like this, to keep it secure. 0:03:41.810,0:03:45.840 And just a note, at the pointy, top “V”[br]of the heart, you’ll need to cut off some 0:03:45.840,0:03:49.240 of the edges so that they won’t be visible[br]through the cutout. 0:03:50.200,0:03:53.810 Once I’d gone all the way around the heart[br]shape, it looked like this, and the next step 0:03:53.810,0:03:58.040 was to simply sew these pieces down, using[br]a straight stitch, all the way around the 0:03:58.040,0:03:59.040 heart. 0:03:59.040,0:04:01.930 Now, it was a little bit tricky getting the[br]jeans onto the machine – because I wanted 0:04:01.930,0:04:06.201 to make sure that I’m only sewing through[br]ONE layer of the jeans, otherwise I’d sew 0:04:06.201,0:04:09.921 up the leg hole – but, trust me, with a[br]bit of perseverance, it can be done! 0:04:11.360,0:04:15.740 Then, starting starting at one of the “sharp”[br]corners of the heart shape, I carefully stitched 0:04:15.750,0:04:20.600 about half an inch away from the cutout’s[br]edge, making sure that I was sewing down all 0:04:20.600,0:04:22.600 of the little “flappy bits” of fabric. 0:04:22.600,0:04:27.030 I went pretty slowly here and I made sure[br]that I removed my pins just before I went 0:04:27.030,0:04:28.110 over them with my needle. 0:04:28.110,0:04:32.840 When I wanted to turn the presser foot to[br]sew around the curvy edge of the heart, I 0:04:32.840,0:04:38.290 put my needle down, lifted up the presser[br]foot, and then rotated my material underneath, 0:04:38.290,0:04:40.680 put the foot back down, and then continued[br]on sewing. 0:04:40.680,0:04:44.650 Also, the bottom thread will be visible on[br]the outside of the jeans, around the cutout, 0:04:44.650,0:04:49.330 so I made sure that I was using a thread in[br]a similar colour to the jeans. 0:04:49.330,0:04:53.630 However, if you wanted contrasting stitching,[br]then feel free to use whatever colour thread 0:04:53.630,0:04:55.000 that you want! 0:04:55.000,0:05:00.320 Also, to save paper and to maintain consistent[br]heart-shapes, I started out with my largest 0:05:00.320,0:05:04.450 heart cutout and as I made them smaller, I[br]used the same piece of paper. 0:05:04.450,0:05:09.370 I simply folded the template back in half,[br]drew a smaller heart inside the previous one, 0:05:09.370,0:05:13.220 cut this out, and then unfolded this gave[br]me my new template – which I used to do 0:05:13.220,0:05:15.530 the same thing for yet another, smaller, cutout. 0:05:15.530,0:05:19.550 Also, I noticed tiny bits of fraying at the[br]corners of my cutout, so I made sure that 0:05:19.550,0:05:23.740 these won’t fray anymore by applying a little[br]bit of fabric glue to these spots, and you 0:05:23.740,0:05:26.260 could also use something like fray-check if[br]you have it. 0:05:26.260,0:05:31.180 Then I gave everything an iron to make the[br]cutouts nice and crisp, and, I’m done! 0:05:31.180,0:05:32.500 So, how did I go? 0:05:32.500,0:05:34.200 [MUSIC PLAYS] 0:05:48.720,0:05:53.140 There are two things that I’ve learned from[br]doing this, that I think would improve this 0:05:53.140,0:05:57.650 project if I were to do it again:[br]The first is to use a pair of jeans with thicker 0:05:57.650,0:05:58.650 denim. 0:05:58.650,0:06:02.460 My jeans are actually made out of this kinda[br]weird, super light-material - according to 0:06:02.460,0:06:07.480 the tag, they are "lifestyle denim", whatever[br]that means - but they’re less like your 0:06:07.480,0:06:10.310 typical denim and more like dress-fabric. 0:06:10.310,0:06:14.530 I think that the hearts would retain their[br]shapes a little bit better if normal-to-heavy 0:06:14.530,0:06:16.050 weight denim was used. 0:06:16.050,0:06:19.750 The second is that I think this would probably[br]work better on a pair of tight-fitting or 0:06:19.750,0:06:20.810 skinny jeans. 0:06:20.810,0:06:24.740 The original jeans have the same problem as[br]mine – the heart kind of gets distorted 0:06:24.740,0:06:27.670 and warped if your leg isn’t out like THIS. 0:06:27.670,0:06:32.320 I mean, the shapes still look like hearts,[br]for the most part, when you are just standing 0:06:32.320,0:06:37.080 normally - BUT they would look like hearts[br]all of the time if you were to use skin-tight 0:06:37.080,0:06:38.080 jeans. 0:06:38.080,0:06:41.450 Nonetheless, this method still does work really[br]well to give you cute cutouts in your jeans 0:06:41.450,0:06:45.990 so my conclusion is: to thrift a pair of jeans[br]or use an old pair of jeans and make these 0:06:45.990,0:06:46.990 for yourself. 0:06:46.990,0:06:47.990 [Scissor snipping and zipper sound effect] 0:06:47.990,0:06:49.660 OKAY- one thing you wanna make sure of when[br]you’re wearing these jeans: 0:06:49.660,0:06:50.960 put some sunscreen under them holes. 0:06:50.960,0:06:53.639 Or you’ll get a sunburn in the shape of[br]a heart. 0:06:53.639,0:06:55.350 Actually.... that sounds kinda cool. 0:06:55.350,0:06:57.740 But you know what's also cool, kids - SKINCARE! 0:06:57.740,0:06:59.270 Skincare is cool. 0:06:59.270,0:07:03.640 I will not be held responsible anyone trying[br]to tan the shape of a heart into their leg. 0:07:03.640,0:07:05.480 Do something more beneficial with your time[br]and… 0:07:05.480,0:07:07.070 Go support
