9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Well, I have known many[br]alpha males in my life, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 chimpanzee alpha males, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I'm going to talk about[br]what an alpha male is, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because I think we can all learn[br]a lot from our close relatives 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where we have alpha males. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And as an example, I want to give you[br]Amos, a male that I knew 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who was a young male[br]and he was alpha male, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 he was very popular, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but he got sick 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and he lost his position because,[br]you know, chimpanzee males 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they can spot from a mile away[br]if you are weak 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and they went for him, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and he lost his position,[br]and then he got sicker and sicker 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 until at some point 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we had to isolate him. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The group lived on a grassy island, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we had to isolate him in a cage, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but we cracked open the cage[br]so that the rest of the chimps 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 still had access to him. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And what happened was most touching. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Other chimps would bring food to him, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they would bring wood wool to him, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which is this thing that they use[br]to sleep in and build nests out of, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and females would put[br]the wood wool behind his back. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He was leaning heavily against the wall, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and look, the way we do with pillows[br]and to patients in a hospital, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they were putting[br]that stuff behind his back. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I thought, this is the way[br]to go for an alpha male. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He was loved and respected,[br]and everyone was taking care of him, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and this is not always how it goes, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because some males don't answer well[br]when they lose their position. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So Amos was an example[br]of a male who was liked as a leader, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I think the term alpha male, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 if you look it up on the internet, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you will find all these business books[br]that tell you how to be an alpha male, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and what they mean[br]is how to beat up others 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and beat them over the head[br]and let them know that you are boss 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and don't mess with me and so on. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And basically an alpha male[br]for them is a bully. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I really don't like[br]that kind of description, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because I am actually partly responsible[br]for the term "alpha male" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because I wrote this book[br]"Chimpanzee Politics," 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which was recommended by Newt Gingrich 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to freshmen congressmen. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I don't know what good it did,[br]but he recommended that book to them, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and after that the term[br]"alpha male" became very popular.
