Brace lecture. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 My name is Joe Salvo, and it is my honor as 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 President of the Copyright Society to welcome you here 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to Fordham University School of Law, and to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 introduce tonight's honorary speaker Shira Perlmutter. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 For those of you that don't know, the Copyright Society is a member run 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 non-profit organization. We are celebrating our 61st Year, and, uh, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 lots and lots of activities that we, uh, sponsor - I would encourage 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 those of you who are not familiar to go to our website 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 www.csusa.org 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for a totla schedule of everything that we're doing. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Um, each year the Society seeks to single out one of the leading 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 thinkers, writers, scholars, practitioners 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 jurists, or policymakers in our field, that has contributed 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to the understanding, discourse, and advancement of copyright, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and to invite them here to New York, to give the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 prestigious Brace lecture. Past speakers 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are among some of the giants of copyright 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and tonight's speaker is no exception. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Shira Perlmutter, for those of you who may not know, currently serves as 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Chief Policy Officer and Director for International Affairs at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In that capacity she serves as the policy advisor to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Undersecretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and she oversees a number of critical functions, including 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the administration and support for all domestic and international IP 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 policy-related operations, like our trade and treaty obligations; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the oversight of the Office of Policy and External Affairs; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 congressional and legislative engagement is carried out 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 through the Office of Governmental Affairs; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 IP education and training through her involvement with the Global IP Academy; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 global IP leadership though the IP Attache Program; and economic analysis 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 through the Chief Economist. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Prior to joining the USPTO Shira served over five and one-half years as the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Executive Vice President of Global Legal Policy, in London, for the IFPI - 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the International Federation of Phonograph Industries, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 developing and coordinating worldwide IP positions on behalf of the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 recorded music industry, and representing the labels before various 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 inter-governmental bodies including the European Commission. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And, while some of us tend to spend our down time in London 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 doing such pedestrian things as visiting the London Eye or the Tower of London, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 while there Shira also served as a lecturer at Kings College at the University of London; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as a research fellow at the Oxford Intellectual Property Research Center 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at the University of Oxford; as a trustee at the Munich Intellectual Property Law Centre
