WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was born in 1993 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the northern part of North Korea 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in a town called Hyesan, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which is on the border with China. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I had loving parents 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and one older sister. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Before I was even 10 years old, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 my father was sent to a labor camp 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for engaging in illegal trading. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, by illegal trading, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he was selling clocks, sugar, rice 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and later copper to feed us. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In 2007, my sister and I decided to escape. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She was 16 years old 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I was 13 years old. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I need you to understand 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what the word "escape" means 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the context of North Korea. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We were all starving, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and hunger means death in North Korea. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So it was the only option for us. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I didn't even understand the concept of escape, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but I could see the lights from China at night, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I wondered, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if I would go somewhere the light is, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I might be able to find a bowl of rice. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's not like we had a grand plan or maps. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We did not know anything about what was going to happen. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Imagine your apartment building caught fire. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I mean, what would you do? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Would you stay there to be burned, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or would you jump off out of the window 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and see what happens? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's what we did. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We jumped out of the house 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 inside the fire. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 North Korea is unimaginable. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's very hard for me 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when people ask me what it feels like to live there. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 To be honest, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I tell you, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 you can't even imagine it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The words in any language 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 can't describe, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because it's a totally different planet, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as you cannot imagine your life on Mars right now. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 For example, the word "love" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 has only one meaning: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 love for the Dear Leader. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's no concept of romantic love in North Korea, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and if you don't know the words, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that means you don't understand the concept, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and therefore, you don't even realize that concept is even a possibility. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Let me give you another example. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Growing up in North Korea, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we truly believed that our Dear Leader 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is an almighty god 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who can even read my thoughts. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was even afraid to think in North Korea. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And we had heard that he was starving for us 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and he was working tirelessly for us, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and my heart just broke for him. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When I escaped to South Korea, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 people told me there 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he was actually a dictator, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he had cars, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 many many resorts, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and he had an ultra-luxurious life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then I remember looking at a picture of him, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 realizing for the first time 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that he is the largest guy in the picture. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And it hit me. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Finally, I realized he wasn't starving. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But I was never able to see that before, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 until someone told me that he was fat. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Really, someone had to teach me that he was fat. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If you have never practiced critical thinking, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 then you simply see what you're told to see. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Biggest question people ask me 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is why there is no revolution inside North Korea? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Are we dumb? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Why is there no revolution for 70 years of this oppression? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I say, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if you don't know you're a slave, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 if you don't know you're isolated 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or oppressed, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how do you fight to be free? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I mean, if you know you're isolated, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that means you are not isolated. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Not knowing is the true definition of isolation, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that's why I never knew 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was isolated when I was in North Korea. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I literally thought I was in the center of the universe. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So here is my idea worth spreading: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a lot of people think 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 humans inherently know what is right and wrong, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the difference between justice and injustice, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 what we deserve and we don't deserve. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I tell them, BS. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Everything, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 everything must be taught, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 including compassion. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If I see someone dying on the street right now, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I will do anything to save that person, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but when I was in North Korea, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I saw people dying and dead on the streets. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I felt nothing, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 not because I'm a psychopath, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but because I never learned the concept of compassion. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Only, I felt compassion, empathy and sympathy in my heart. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 After I learned the word "compassion" and the concept, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I feel them now. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now, I live in the United States as a free person. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thank you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And recently, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the leader of our free country, our President Trump, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 met with my former god, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and he decided human rights is not important enough 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to include in his agendas, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and he did not talk about it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And it scares me. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We live in a world right now 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where a dictator can be praised 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for executing his uncle, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for killing his half-brother, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 killing thousands of North Koreans, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that was worthy of praise. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And also it made me think: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 perhaps we all need to be taught something new about freedom now. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Freedom is fragile. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I don't want to alarm you, but it is. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It only took three generations 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to make North Korea into George Orwell's "1984." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It took only three generations. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 If we don't fight for human rights, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for the people who are oppressed right now who doesn't have a voice, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as a free people here, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who will fight for us when we are not free? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Machines? Animals? I don't know. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think it's wonderful that we care about climate change, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 animal rights, gender equality, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all of these things. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The fact that we care about animals rights, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that means that's how beautiful our heart is, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that we care about someone who cannot speak for themselves. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And North Koreans right now cannot speak for themselves. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They don't have internet in the 21st century. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We don't have electricity, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and it is the darkest place on Earth right now. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now I want to say something to my fellow North Koreans 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who are living in the darkness. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They might not believe this, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but I want to tell them 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that an alternative life is possible. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Be free. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 From my experience, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 literally anything is possible. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was ?? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I was sold as a slave. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But now I'm here, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that is why I believe in miracles. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The one thing that I learned from history 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is that nothing is forever in this world, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and that is why we have every reason to be hopeful. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Thank you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Applause)
