Because she has so much to offer[br]the world. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Yes, um, my name is Rosena Finister 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Crowd whooping and clapping] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I'm from a small town where all the[br]poor people live at. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That's where I'm from. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This is the type of art that I [br]started doing. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Creative Growth currently serves [br]162 artists at our studio every week. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When people come to the Creative Growth[br]studio, for the most part 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they've never made art before [br]in their lives, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we kind of welcome that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because it allows us to see who they are. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And, you know, there's no[br]right or wrong; 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we don't teach in a traditional way. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We say, you know, "what would you like[br]to do?", 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "what are you thinking about", "what do [br]you dream about", 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "what color do you like"? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Tell us your story. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Jazzy music playing] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I've been coming here since 1992 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I like paint, I like to draw, and[br]I like paintings of people -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 like, different people. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And stars -- movie stars. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There are wholesome people. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Wholesome encounters. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 What do you like to look at? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I like that one. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This one? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Yeah. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Look at that one?[br]This is what? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 What do you call the name[br]of this painting? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Inner Limits". 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 William is just such a brilliant artist. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And look at this. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Beautiful piece. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Do you remember making this? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I remember. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That's what? Praise Frisco? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Yeah. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He envisions through his work[br]a utopian reality that he creates 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for us all to live in. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A world where people who have died[br]come back to life, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 places where bad neighborhoods are safe, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 where his family is happy, [br]where the world is peaceful. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And, he believes the painting will be[br]powerful enough 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to make that a reality. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Riding on the spaceship,[br]there's not gonna be no more evils. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 No more aliens, no more monsters, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 no more evils. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Uh-huh. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Creative Growth is really a[br]Bay Area story. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The disability rights movement in the[br]early 1970s, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Creative Growth really comes from that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, during that time, people with[br]disabilities in institutions 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 were suddenly deinstitutionalized. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, artists came together in Oakland,[br]and put paint on a table, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and said "well, these people are gonna[br]come here; creativity is the path forward" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm just doing a tree right now. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And, people with disabilities can[br]communicate and be a vital part 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of society. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Part of the Creative Growth plan to come [br]here and make art, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is that represents you, and you show your[br]work in the gallery. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If the work sells, the artist gets half [br]the money. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Creative Growth, the nonprofit gets half[br]the money. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We buy supplies and support the[br]artists with that money. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you came to Creative Growth, you may[br]buy something for 10 dollars, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and you can buy something for [br]75,000 dollars. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's exactly like the contemporary art[br]world. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 As an artist's work develops, and it gets[br]into collections, and museums, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and highly sought after, the prices go up. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And Creative Growth artists follow that[br]same path. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Judith Scott is one of the most well-[br]known Creative Growth artists. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 As an artist, Judith Scott transcended[br]this difficult situation. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Where she was separated from her[br]family and institutionalized 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for almost 40 years. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 She was Deaf and it wasn't known, so she[br]never developed language, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and she was isolated. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So in her 40's, she comes to [br]Creative Growth. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And, her method to talk to us 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 was art. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The process is very important to her 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the result of that process with these[br]sculptures, with hidden objects, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and accumulated, protected things were[br]sacred or important to her. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think Judith Scott's role in[br]contemporary art is that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 she has opened the door for a lot[br]of people to see 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who an artist can be. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Mumbling] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Right? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Right. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Mumbling] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You know, Dan's work is based on words. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He builds literally words on top of [br]each other to form 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 his communication with the world. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Do you want me to pull it down? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Yeah! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Pull it gently, right? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Right. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 [Mumbling] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Right. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We still don't know a lot about autism,[br]but there's this big barrier there. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There's this person behind this barrier 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and he can't communicate in a way that[br]you and I can communicate with each other. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And to put himself down on this paper, [br]that's Danny's opportunity to talk 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to people. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Dan's work has definitely progressed in [br]the years he's been here. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Dan became more and more interested[br]in the graphic qualities of the letters, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of how to use paint, how to use the brush,[br]how to work on massive pieces of paper. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He's very sophisticated, and he's a[br]colorist. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He's clear about what he wants to do. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You know?
