0:00:03.490,0:00:07.490 Hi, my name is Matthew Wangeman. 0:00:11.290,0:00:15.380 I teach Disability Studies[br]at Northern Arizona University. 0:00:25.929,0:00:29.929 I have been a disability advocate [br]for over 30 years. 0:00:55.843,0:00:59.843 I went to the University of California [br]at Berkeley 0:01:25.464,0:01:29.464 so I have been very lucky in my life. 0:01:56.637,0:02:00.637 My first memory of the ADA was [br]three years after it was passed 0:02:31.436,0:02:35.436 because I was in Berkeley 0:02:59.502,0:03:03.502 and Berkeley had stronger laws [br]than the ADA 0:03:36.151,0:03:40.151 so I really did not know or care [br]about the ADA at that time. 0:04:27.616,0:04:31.616 And the interesting thing is[br]in Berkeley and in California 0:04:46.438,0:04:50.438 people with disabilities were talking [br]about how the ADA was less strong 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for people with disabilities [br]in California and Berkeley. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So when I first learned about the ADA[br]I was living in an area that had 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 stronger rules and regulations for people [br]with disabilities than the ADA had put in. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So I did not care that much[br]about it at the time. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think the ADA has helped with [br]accessibility 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 all around the United States. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That is to me probably one of [br]the most important things 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that the ADA has accomplished. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I really think the ADA is [br]a great civil rights law 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it has put disability [br]on the map in this country. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But for people with [br]significant disabilities 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the ADA has not done that much [br]in the grand scheme. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Like employment is a great example. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We are still at the same rate of [br]employment as before the ADA. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think given where this country is today[br]the ADA could not be stronger. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In fact, given today the ADA [br]would not pass, and that is sad. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I really think our education system needs[br]to be changed 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and even though the ADA really [br]does not cover education it should. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In order to have people with disabilities [br]included in this society 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 they need to have a quality education[br]and special education is not cutting it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So if I had my way, [br]I would throw out special education 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and have one education system [br]for everyone. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It is stupid to have two [br]and to me it should be illegal 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to have a separate education system. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I would have the ADA[br]cover education as well. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Just to really believe that people [br]with disabilities have the same rights 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as everyone else and I'd like to say[br]we can have all the laws in the world 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but if people's attitudes do not change,[br]we are just spinning our wheels. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I use a wheelchair. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And if my wheelchair just spins its wheels[br]I don't seem to go anywhere. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Laughter)
