It's insane. So Let's go. (girly squeal) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (phone rings) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Hello? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Scott: Uh, hello, hello hello 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Um if you're hearing this than that means you beat 50/20 mode and I have to do an 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 interview now, which I'm kind of uncomfortable with but I'm gonna do it an.. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Ah forget it, I'm done with the Phone Guy shtick 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I was going to try to keep it up for a while, but naw I think I'll end it right there 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Dawko: That was perfect 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Scott: How you doing today Lewis? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Dawko: I am very scared and nervous because yknow 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Scott: No no no (that's 3x) crazy talk 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Yeah, I'm a little anxious about this too because yknow I tend to ramble 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with my answers sometimes. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but I haven't prepared any answers for this, I'm just gonna speak from the heart and just 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 talk about some stuff and yeah it'll be good. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Dawko: Awesome because today is the 4 year anniversary of Five Nights at Freddy's. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, 4 years is crazy 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Scott: Yeah 4 years[br]Dawko: We'll just get straight into it 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, the first game 4 years since FNAF 1 we're going straight into that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, the first question I'd love to ask you let's kick it off with 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "How did you think of the original designs of the animatronics of the original gang?" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Scott: Um yknow, the main three characters Freddy, Bonnie, and Chica those designs 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 just kinda uh I didn't really plan ahead what animals they should be. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Those three just seemed natural to me for some reason. Yknow (Dawko: umhum) the only one I really 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 struggled with was trying to think of the fourth character. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Yknow who would be on the little stage kinda by himself (Dawko:yeah) and I'm trying to remember 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 all the options that I originally was kinda debating between. I mean one of the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 contenders was a fox obviously, which ended up winning. The other one was a wolf 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Another one was going to be a beaver, but later I decided against that cuz I thought 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that was too on the nose from Chipper, so I decided against that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Actually if I remember correctly, I think that a beaver character was the front runner, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 until I finally decided against him because of Chipper and then went with the 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 fox instead. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Dawko: Yeah. So, Freddy was always going to be the original like leader instead of Chipper? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Scott: Yeah Freddy was always going to be the main character. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 He was the first character that I made. Um it just came naturally, I didn't have 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to plan him out. I just knew that he was going to be a bear with a top hat holding 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a microphone. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Dawko: yeah 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Yknow he was always going to be the leader of the pack. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Dawko: Um the next question is 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 How did you come up with the game mechanic? Sitting alone in an office, not able to move. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I think someone mentioned about Sit N' Survive. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Did that have any inspiration for that? Did any like old games inspire you for this one? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Scott: Um I don't think it was Sit N' Survive. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Sit N' Survive was kind of a yknow uh all of these games cough 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Then again I guess my mindset at the time was to make smaller games that would be 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a shorter experience. For a while I was trying to make these big sweeping edge EPIC games 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 like The Desolate Hope and stuff and it was too much of a gigantic commitment 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that ultimately yknow they just weren't paying off and at the time I was really 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 struggling yknow to find... yknow somthing to kinda yknow support my family and everything 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Five Nights at Freddy's was kinda the result of me switching to this idea of 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 making shorter experiences that I can make[br]a bit faster, yknow without commiting yknow 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 two years to them. Yknow while also[br]um... yknow making it a really robust 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 experience. It's just a shorter game yknow?[br]Dawko: Yeah 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Scott: I think that played a big part in it[br]yknow everything is designed to where you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 see everything right away. Yknow, as soon [br]as you jump in you are in the experience. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Yknow? So it doesn't matter if it lasts[br]for 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 30 minutes, or an hour yknow you are in the[br]middle of it right away. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Dawko: Did anything change along the[br]course of making FNAF 1? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Scott: Um... I don't think I had any[br]problems. Lots of the stuff that was in 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there... I don't know. FNAF 1 I think was [br]a result of all the right ingredients to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 be there. I threw a bunch of stuff in there[br]and then yknow people who tested it would 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 give me... and I don't mean my kids, I let[br]some other people test it as well. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But yknow they would give me some advice[br]like one person said 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "oh I think you should leave out Phone Guy[br]there's too much exposition" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and then my mother jumps in and says[br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "oh I don't think you should have backstory[br]about anybody being killed yknow I don't [br]think the game needs that" 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Yknow I think I made a lot of really good[br]decisions about what to leave in yknow and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 what to take out. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It was just all the right ingredients there[br]so I'm really happy with that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Dawko: It really stood out from all the[br]indie games people were playing to the time. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That's definitely how it became successful.[br]It just stood out from any other horror[br]experience aswell so yeah. Good Job! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Speaking about that exploding,[br]Did you think it was going to get a huge[br]reaction on the internet? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Scott: No, of course not. I mean... like I said,[br]at the time yknow I was trying to make 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a bunch of little games to help support my[br]family. At the time I think I was making 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 slot machine games and just yknow anything[br]that would bring in an extra yknow 40 or 50 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 dollars a month. Yknow just trying to [br]accumulate all that stuff up so no. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Don't get me wrong, yknow that wasn't just[br]an afterthought of the game, I put in a lot 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of time and effort into FNAF obviously[br]but as far as expecting it to explode? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 No, of course not. Yknow I remember when[br]I released it, I didn't get it on Steam or 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 anything it was on a site called Desura at[br]the time, which was more imediately 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 welcoming of yknow anybody who wanted to[br]post games. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There are other sites that do that now, but[br]yknow I was watching the download count on[br]that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I was watching it kinda skyrocket and [br]eventually my wife would come over and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 she'd be like "lemme look at the number[br]lemme look at the number". She'd come over 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 every 10 minutes wanting to see because she[br]was just astonished at how quickly that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 number was going from yknow 5000 to 10000[br]to 15000 and 20000. It was just going [br]through the roof by the minute! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Yknow at the time I was just kinda enjoying[br]it that evening. I was like 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 "Well yknow this is great but yknow it'll[br]be over tomorrow." Yknow that was my mindset. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Like "Oh wow this is a big spike, everybody[br]is enjoying it. I wonder what I'll make tomorrow." 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I had no idea that 4 years later I was still [br]gonna be in the middle of a bunch of FNAF projects. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Dawko: Yeah, that's awesome. That's really [br]awesome 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Do you have a favorite memory of FNAF 1? 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Scott: yeah, yeah ,yeah I do and it's the first jumpscare for me 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the first jumpscare from my two kids you know and 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it was all Bonnie which thrilled me because Bonnie is the only one that
