So where is the iPhone made? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's really made here in the world. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's a world phone like many of the products we consume today, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's produced by thousands, hundreds of thousands 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of people all brought together, all cooperating 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in order to produce a product. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now take a look at this picture. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It shows something utterly familiar but I want you to see it 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 deeper now with new eyes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We have here grapes from Chile, pineapples from Brazil, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Kiwis from New Zealand, all of these within a hand's breath 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to one another. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Think of all the farmers, all the truckers, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all the airline pilots who have worked together 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to bring this literal cornucopia to you. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And what do we call this place? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Think of the name now with a new meaning. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We call it a supermarket. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 When you read the news or see it on television, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we're often told about conflict, but there's another story, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a deeper story, a story which is all around us everyday, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 although sometimes it's hard to see and that is a massive, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a tremendous amount of worldwide cooperation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Hundreds of thousands of people from Kido to Chicago cooperated 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to bring the rose to our handsome young man 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and they did so voluntarily, on the basis of self interest, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 without central command or central direction. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is invisible hand in action. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Self interest coordinated towards the social good 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 through the use of markets. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Even in economics, we often focus on competition 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but the deeper story is cooperation, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 worldwide cooperation. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What markets do is coordinate the self interest 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of many different people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who ultimately have different goals, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 different preferences, different insights, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 different knowledge, different circumstances. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 What markets do, they coordinate the different interests 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and knowledge of these different people 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to produce extensive cooperation and mutual gain. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's one of the deep lessons of economics.
