WEBVTT 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Letterman) Thank you, I guess a lot of us, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 most of us, have been thinking about Robin Williams. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I believe we found out a week ago that he had died. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Many things come to mind in a situation like this, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and, of course, more questions are raised than can possibly be answered, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but I started reflecting about it. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I knew Robin Williams for 38 years. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 38 years, which, in and of itself, is crazy how time... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I met him at The Comedy Store. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He and I were kids, along with Jay Leno, and Tom Dreesen 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and Tim Thomerson, and Johnny Dark, and Elayne Boosler, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and on and on, and Jimmy Walker. And we were all out there 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at The Comedy Store and we wanted to make people laugh. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We wanted to get on the Tonight show, we wanted something because 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we all felt that we were funny. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In those days, we were working for free drinks-- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 some were working for more free drinks than others. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So you would go on stage, and then you would do your little skits, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and then you would come off stage, and if there was a new guy 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 coming on, you'd want to stick around and make fun of the new guy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (man off screen) Sure. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because we were all worried that somebody else is coming in 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who's really funny, and then we'll have to go back, in my case, to Indiana. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 - (man off screen) Yes. - (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I can remember the night my friend George Miller 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I, who was a very funny comic, and was on this show many times, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we were at The Comedy Store and they introduced Robin Williams. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And, for some reason, in the beginning he was 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 introduced as being from Scotland. They said he was Scottish. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So now we're stumped. We don't know. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There's a Scottish guy, really, coming to the United States? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So we were feeling pretty smug about our position right away 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because it's gonna be haggis and that kind of crap. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So we're relaxed. We're ready to go. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And, all of a sudden, he comes up on stage 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and you know what it is. It's like nothing we had 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ever seen before. Nothing we had ever imagined before. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We'd go home and are writing our little jokes about stuff, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and this guy comes in and we're like morning dew. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 - He comes in like a hurricane. - (man off screen) Yeah. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And now the longer he was on stage, the worse we feel about ourselves. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And because it's not stopping! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then he finishes and I thought, "Well, that's it. They're gonna have 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to put an end to show business because what could happen after this?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then we get to see this night after night after night, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and we didn't approach him because we were afraid of him. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Honest to God. You though, "Holy crap! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There goes my chance at show business because of this guy from Scotland." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then, like shot out of a cannon, he goes and he's on the Happy Day's show. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then from the Happy Day's show, he gets to be on Mork and Mindy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now there's some structure to his life. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He's not at The Comedy Store every night because he's got an actual job. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So the rest of us can pretend that it never happened. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But, yet then, he goes from Mork and Mindy, and then he starts making movie 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 after movie after movie. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He's nominated four times for an Academy Award. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And it wasn't really until Paul and I started the NBC version of this show, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 which, by the way, is still running in Mexico-- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 - (man off screen) It is. - (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Very popular. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But it wasn't until then that I got to really know Robin Williams 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because he would come on to promote movies, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or concerts or whatever he was talking about, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and he was always so gracious, and we would talk about the old times. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Never did he act like, " Oh, I knew you guys were scared 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because I was so good." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And it was just a pleasure to know the guy. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And he was a gentleman and delightful, and even in the old days, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 he was kind enough to ask me to appear on his Mork and Mindy show. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Now this is a double edged sword. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because he did it only because he was trying 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to help other fledgling, starting out comics. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 - Makes sense. - Right. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The other side of the sword is I have no business being on that show. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I can't...I have no business being on that show. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter and applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But he gave me a job! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In those days, jobs were hard to come by, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and there I was, and I was on Mork and Mindy, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and I can remember between the dress rehearsal 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the actual taping of the show, the director of the program, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 - Howard...Howard...Howard Shore-- - Howard Storm. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Storm. Howard Storm comes up to me and he says, "Well, you've been trying 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all week, so this is your last chance." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 - (laughter) - Oh. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So even to the detriment of the show, Robin was kind enough to invite 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 me to come on because he thought, "Why can't I spread this around 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and have some of my friends share in my success?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Which is exactly what he did. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He then was on our show, this show and the old show, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 - a total of merely 50 times. - A total of 50 times? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 - 50 times. 50 times. - (applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And two things would happen because Robin was on the program. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 - One: I didn't have to do anything. - Yes. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 All I had to do was sit here and watch the machine. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Yeah. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And two: People would watch. If they know Robin was on the show, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the viewership would go up because they wanted to see Robin. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And, believe me, that wasn't just true of television. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I believe that was true of the kind of guy he was. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 People were drawn to him because of this electricity. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Whatever it was he radiated that propelled him and powered him. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And then he came back after my heart surgery, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Robin was nice enough to come on that night 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and it was very, very funny and very, very appropriate. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And here is a picture that I will now cherish, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 even more than I had previously. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 - There are four people right there. - Wow. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Two of which wildly funny, insanely funny. Two are not. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter and applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (Letterman) The handsome woman there is Mitzi Shore. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 She owned The Comedy Store. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We all, the three of us, worked there. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think Robin and I, it'd be safe to say,we started there. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Richard Prior was already Richard Prior, but he would work there 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the guy in the middle, I trimmed hedges. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 - So we would like to-- - (applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We put together a segment of Robin William's appearances, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and moreover, more than anything, it will make you laugh 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and, really, that's what we should take from this. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 He could make you laugh under any circumstances. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 - Here he is on our show. - (applause) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's from the Gandhi on Ice collection! 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Oh, god, how you doin', Mr. Williams? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 God, Mrs. Doubtfire is very funny. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 You know, you're much more attractive as an older woman. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 (laughter) 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 - (Letterman) Hold him! Robin Williams. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 - We'll be right back. - (applause)
