WEBVTT 00:00:01.420 --> 00:00:06.012 Racial and ethnic divide, something that hit so close to home for many yet 00:00:06.012 --> 00:00:08.689 gets ignored constantly in legislation. 00:00:08.689 --> 00:00:10.267 It is October 2020, 00:00:10.267 --> 00:00:15.540 an election year that holds extreme tension between political extremes. 00:00:15.540 --> 00:00:18.544 And we are living through a pandemic that has already lasted for 00:00:18.544 --> 00:00:20.819 almost eight months with no clear end in sight. 00:00:23.336 --> 00:00:26.197 Racial and ethnic divide has never been clear than protests in 00:00:26.197 --> 00:00:28.025 the streets fighting for black lives. 00:00:28.025 --> 00:00:31.186 There's no reason to wait to have conversations about racial and 00:00:31.186 --> 00:00:32.570 ethnic divides in America. 00:00:35.026 --> 00:00:40.232 Many of the problems of racial and ethnic divides stem from economics. 00:00:40.232 --> 00:00:41.936 The wealth gap between white and 00:00:41.936 --> 00:00:45.830 POC Americans has only been becoming clearer in recent years. 00:00:45.830 --> 00:00:49.898 During the uprising of the coronavirus outbreak, the labor and 00:00:49.898 --> 00:00:51.940 stock market face major blows. 00:00:51.940 --> 00:00:56.900 Even though this is mostly subsided, the effects on Americans have not, 00:00:56.900 --> 00:00:59.550 significantly financial hardships. 00:00:59.550 --> 00:01:00.129 Black and 00:01:00.129 --> 00:01:04.921 Hispanic individuals have been most affected by these financial hardships. 00:01:04.921 --> 00:01:09.142 According to the Pew Research Centre, 30% of Hispanic Americans, and 00:01:09.142 --> 00:01:14.033 33% of black Americans, have reported that they've gotten food from a food bank or 00:01:14.033 --> 00:01:17.936 similar organization since the start of the coronavirus pandemic. 00:01:17.936 --> 00:01:21.240 While only 11% of white Americans reported the same thing. 00:01:22.270 --> 00:01:27.837 I had a conversation with my friend Bethany Jablon about this wealth gap. 00:01:27.837 --> 00:01:31.698 >> Do you have any background knowledge in the subject of wage gaps in conjunction 00:01:31.698 --> 00:01:33.814 with racial and ethnic divide in America? 00:01:33.814 --> 00:01:38.499 >> I have a very limited level of knowledge on that subject. 00:01:38.499 --> 00:01:41.975 I have watched a couple TED talks just to familiarize myself with it. 00:01:41.975 --> 00:01:45.737 But I don't think that we spend nearly enough time in school talking about wage 00:01:45.737 --> 00:01:48.659 gaps, having serious conversations around these issues. 00:01:48.659 --> 00:01:53.139 And I think a lot of us have chosen to focus a little bit more on racial 00:01:53.139 --> 00:01:58.019 inequities, especially this year after the killing of George Floyd and 00:01:58.019 --> 00:02:00.112 Black Lives Matter protests. 00:02:00.112 --> 00:02:02.121 >> Yeah, I can definitely agree. 00:02:02.121 --> 00:02:06.727 I actually went to some Black Lives Matter protests in the past couple months. 00:02:06.727 --> 00:02:08.326 And from the speakers there, I learned so 00:02:08.326 --> 00:02:11.642 much more about racial inequalities that I never even thought of before. 00:02:11.642 --> 00:02:16.778 And with economics, I'm taking a macroeconomics class at state and 00:02:16.778 --> 00:02:20.657 I've learned a lot about economics with racial divides. 00:02:20.657 --> 00:02:22.725 And that's one of the reasons I'm doing this project. 00:02:22.725 --> 00:02:26.940 More specifically with wage gaps in these racial inequalities. 00:02:27.940 --> 00:02:31.769 For example, during the coronavirus pandemic, black and Hispanic individuals 00:02:31.769 --> 00:02:34.999 have actually been the most affected by these financial hardships. 00:02:34.999 --> 00:02:39.118 According to the Pew Research Center 30% of Hispanic Americans and 00:02:39.118 --> 00:02:42.747 33% of black Americans have reported going to food banks or 00:02:42.747 --> 00:02:46.261 similar organizations during the coronavirus pandemic. 00:02:46.261 --> 00:02:50.604 While only 11% of white Americans have had to report doing the same thing. 00:02:50.604 --> 00:02:54.083 I thought this was really interesting, how do you feel about it? 00:02:54.083 --> 00:02:58.590 >> It's crazy that there's that big of a difference between them. 00:02:58.590 --> 00:03:03.216 I definitely think that everyone should have access to food 00:03:03.216 --> 00:03:06.930 without having to resort to a food bank. 00:03:06.930 --> 00:03:09.580 It's really unfair that those numbers are so different. 00:03:09.580 --> 00:03:14.600 So I think it's really important that we take steps to level the playing field 00:03:14.600 --> 00:03:19.247 there and to make sure that everyone is able to afford food on their own. 00:03:19.247 --> 00:03:20.628 >> Yeah, definitely. 00:03:20.628 --> 00:03:22.322 And just like you were saying, 00:03:22.322 --> 00:03:25.985 we need to level the playing field we need to have these solutions. 00:03:25.985 --> 00:03:29.024 So during this project, I've been trying to look around for 00:03:29.024 --> 00:03:32.242 different solutions that I could find, such as reparations for 00:03:32.242 --> 00:03:35.713 different communities, more specifically, black communities. 00:03:35.713 --> 00:03:39.603 Or government help to all different types of communities, 00:03:39.603 --> 00:03:44.658 poorer communities, such as job opportunities or job help, job training, 00:03:44.658 --> 00:03:49.115 all these different types of things that government can help with. 00:03:49.115 --> 00:03:51.873 But in all, I think it's just really important for 00:03:51.873 --> 00:03:54.518 these conversations to happen between people. 00:03:54.518 --> 00:03:58.721 I think it's really important that we're talking today. 00:03:58.721 --> 00:04:01.007 Do you think it's important too? 00:04:01.007 --> 00:04:05.595 >> Definitely, I think this is a subject that we've denied attention to for 00:04:05.595 --> 00:04:06.485 far too long. 00:04:06.485 --> 00:04:11.772 And in order to combat these issues, in racial inequities and in the wage gap, 00:04:11.772 --> 00:04:16.257 I think that we need to get more comfortable with talking about it, 00:04:16.257 --> 00:04:18.120 talking about solutions. 00:04:18.120 --> 00:04:20.530 First, identifying that there is a problem there. 00:04:20.530 --> 00:04:25.895 And then taking specific steps to ensure that the playing field is level, 00:04:25.895 --> 00:04:27.029 like you said. 00:04:27.029 --> 00:04:29.849 And just to make sure that all people 00:04:29.849 --> 00:04:35.100 have the same opportunities regardless of their race. 00:04:35.100 --> 00:04:38.046 >> I do understand that I too have a lot more to learn about this topic. 00:04:38.046 --> 00:04:41.243 Whether that be from people with different perspectives from me or 00:04:41.243 --> 00:04:43.653 people being affected by these issues right now. 00:04:43.653 --> 00:04:48.292 I urge you to initiate these conversations with your friends, family members, and 00:04:48.292 --> 00:04:51.446 those who you may not normally have conversations with. 00:04:51.446 --> 00:04:53.280 You never know what you might learn.
