1 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 When you have a job that pays you enough to cover your basic needs, 2 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 your bills, and even some more to spend, 3 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 the assumption is that you'd be happy, 4 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 or, even better, fulfilled. 5 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And it seems unthinkable when you wake up and say 6 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 you're going to leave a job like that to pursue a passion. 7 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And that was my dilemma six years ago. 8 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I had a comfortable job, I lived a comfortable life, 9 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and people expected me to be fulfilled, 10 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 but I wasn't. 11 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 There was something in me that wanted more. 12 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 There was a misalignment between the things I did on a daily basis 13 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and the things that I deeply cared about. 14 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And so I decided to quit 15 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and explore the possibility of bringing this passion into my daily routine. 16 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And the think about finding your passion 17 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 is that it's not straightforward. 18 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Even for people and money and degrees, 19 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 they still struggle to identify their passion. 20 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And here I was as a 30-year old talking about finding my passion 21 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and turning it into a career. 22 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Literally, people told me, 23 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 "You don't talk about passion until you've made enough money." 24 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 (Laughter) 25 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 "Or at least until you're ready to retire." 26 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Because, there's a notion that looking inward 27 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and finding the things that give us pleasure and fulfillment 28 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 is a luxury that only the rich can enjoy, 29 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 or a pleasure that only the retired can indulge in. 30 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Which made me wonder: 31 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 is passion only for the rich 32 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 or an experience only the retired can enjoy? 33 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 For many of us, we've been led to believe 34 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 that life is a race for survival. 35 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 We've been conditioned to see ourselves as survivors that must do everything 36 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 in our power to survive. 37 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 In Africa, we had to go through school, cram and pass, 38 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 in the hope that you get a job after, 39 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and if you do, stick at it no matter how much it sucks. 40 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 (Laughter) 41 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Until you get a better offer or you're asked to retire. 42 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And as a dropout, 43 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I knew that I was not entitled to anything. 44 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Every opportunity was a privilege. 45 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And so when I thought about quitting, 46 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 it was a huge risk. 47 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I was given two alternatives, 48 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 which are the most popular in Africa. 49 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 The first one is sign up for any course at a vocational institution and do it. 50 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 My second option, settle for any job offer you can get, 51 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 no matter the working conditions, 52 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and do it. 53 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 That probably explains why we have so many of our young people 54 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 being trafficked in search of greener pastures. 55 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I opted for the first option. 56 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I did look at a couple vocational institutions 57 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 in the hope that I would find a course that resonated with my persona, 58 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 my dream, and my aspiration. 59 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I was disappointed to learn that there was no room for misfits like me 60 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 in these institutions. 61 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 The education system in many parts of the world 62 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 has been designed around pre-selected options 63 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 that young people are expected to fit in or risk becoming misfits. 64 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And so going through school I was nurtured and conditioned 65 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 to think in the straight line and stay within the straight line. 66 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 But when I dropped out, I discovered a world of possibilities. 67 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I knew I could be anything, I could study anything, 68 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 so I leveraged free online courses. 69 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 That's how I built my CV, got into employment, 70 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and worked for eight years. 71 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And after eight years, 72 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I told myself there must be more to life 73 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 than just going through the routines of life. 74 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 So in 2014 I started an organization called Kyusa 75 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 where we are working with other school youth 76 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and empowering them to turn their passions 77 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 into profitable, scalable and sustainable businesses. 78 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Now, when we talk about passion, 79 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 one of the most common questions that people ask is, "What is passion? 80 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 How do I even find it?" 81 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And in the simplest definition, 82 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 passion is a collection of your life experiences 83 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 that give you the deepest sense of fulfillment. 84 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And to identify your passion, you need to look inward. 85 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 So we used two reflective questions. 86 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 The first question is, 87 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 if you had all the time and the money in the world, 88 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 what would you spend your time doing? 89 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 It sounds like a very simple question, 90 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 but many people struggle to answer this question 91 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 because they've just never thought about it. 92 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 The second question we ask 93 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 is, what makes you happy 94 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 or gives you the deepest sense of fulfillment? 95 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Now, you would assume that we all know what makes us happy, 96 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 but it's also interesting to note that so many people have no idea 97 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 what makes them happy, 98 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 because they are so busy going through the routines of life, 99 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 they've never stopped to look inward. 100 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And so identifying the things that give us a deep sense of fulfillment 101 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and the things that give us deep joy 102 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 are thoughts that begin to direct us in the direction of our passion. 103 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And just in case you're wondering 104 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 what your answers are to those two questions, 105 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I invite you to sit with those questions later and just reflect about it. 106 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 However, I am also aware that passion alone 107 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 cannot guarantee success in life. 108 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And I should note 109 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 that not every passion can become a career. 110 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 For passion to become a career, 111 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 it must be coupled with the right set of skills, conditioning, and positioning. 112 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 So when we get our young people to look inward, 113 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 we also ask them what skills do you have, 114 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 what talents do you have, what experience do you have 115 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 that you can use to build a niche in the marketplace. 116 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 But more than that, we also look at the market trends, 117 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 because it doesn't matter how much you love and enjoy it. 118 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 If nobody wants it or is willing to pay for it, 119 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 it can't be a career. It's just a hobby. 120 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And the third thing we look at is how do you position yourself? 121 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Who are you targeting? Who do you want to sell to? 122 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Why would they want to buy from you? 123 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And so the combination of the three is what enables you to move 124 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 from just a passion to a business. 125 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And many of our young people have been able to turn their ideas 126 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and burning desires into profitable businesses 127 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 or social enterprises, 128 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and they're not just creating jobs, 129 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 but they are solving societal challenges. 130 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I'll share with you two examples. 131 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 One of them is Esther. 132 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I met Esther two years ago. 133 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 She had been out of school for two years 134 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and she had been deeply affected by her dropping out. 135 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 As a result, she had experienced severe depression 136 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 to a point where she attempted to take her own life several times. 137 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Her friends and family didn't know what to do for her. 138 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 They simply prayed for her. 139 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 When I met Esther and I started to converse with her, 140 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I asked her a simple question. 141 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I said, "If you had all the time and the money in the world, 142 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 what would you do?" 143 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Without thinking or hesitation, 144 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 her eyes lit up and she began to tell me 145 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 how she wanted to change the lives of young people. 146 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 She wanted to restore hope and dignity to other teenagers 147 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 by helping them make informed decisions about life. 148 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 I was certain of the fact that this burning desire in her 149 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 was unquenchable, 150 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 so we worked with Esther to put a framework around this desire. 151 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Today, she runs a social enterprise in her village 152 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 raising awareness about substance abuse, mental health, sexual reproductive health, 153 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and is helping other school dropouts acquire vocational skills 154 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 so they can make a living for themselves. 155 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Esther turned 20 this year, 156 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 and for the last two years, she has organized and annual teen fest 157 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 that brings together over 500 teenagers. 158 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 (Applause) 159 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Young people that are able to network and collaborate 160 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 on different projects, 161 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 but more importantly to meet professionals they would otherwise never have met. 162 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 This is all engineered by a girl that believed the world had no room for her, 163 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 that without education she would never amount to anything. 164 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 But by looking inward and tapping into a burning desire, 165 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 putting structure around it, 166 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 it has become a model 167 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 that not only changed her life 168 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 but it's transforming the lives of hundreds of young people every year. 169 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 My other example is Moussa. 170 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 Moussa is a natural artistic guy. 171 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 He's the kind that would look at any design and replicate it with ease. 172 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 And so he seeks to recognize that ability in him. 173 99:59:59,999 --> 99:59:59,999 When I met Moussa, he was doing all kinds of crafts -- bags, belts, wallets -- but it was more of a part-time thing, or sometimes if he was really broke and needed to make quick money then he would come up with a design and sell it. But he had never thought of it as a business. We started working with Moussa, helping him shift his mindset from a hobby to a business, and beginning to rethink how can he make products that he could sell and even be able to scale. Moussa makes some of the most amazing bags I've ever seen, and over the last one year Moussa's business has grown. He has been recognized in different places. Currently, he's talking about exporting to developed countries. Moussa, like any other dropout, believed that without academic credentials, he wouldn't amount to anything. He thought the talent he had was nothing simply because it did not have an academic paper to define it. But by looking inward and finding that what he had was the greatest asset and supporting him to turn it into a business, he's not just living, he's thriving. The thing about looking inward is that it can be scary, especially if you're doing it for the first time, but the truth is you never truly start living until you learn to live from the inside out. And in unlocking potential, we need to look inward to identify the things that give us a deep sense of fulfillment, the things that give us the deepest joy, and then weave them into the patterns of our daily routines. In so doing, we cease to work and we start to live, and the thing about living is that you never have to retire or to resign. (Laughter) (Applause) And so as you think about unlocking potential for ourselves, for our young people, for our children, let's not condition them to look outward but condition them to look inward to tap into who they are and bring that self into what they do every day. When you cease to work and you live, when passion becomes a career, you don't just excel, you become unstoppable. Thank you. (Applause)
