0:00:04.886,0:00:08.046 (Half bell) 0:00:10.875,0:00:25.045 (Bell) 0:00:35.935,0:00:48.105 Nowadays, in Korea, many people feel [br]lonely or sad, 0:00:51.984,0:00:58.064 so I want to do something for them. 0:01:00.888,0:01:05.538 I don't know: What can I do for them? 0:01:06.900,0:01:08.618 I wonder: In my country, in Korea, 0:01:08.948,0:01:11.708 there are people who have a lot of sadness 0:01:12.839,0:01:15.629 and loneliness in their heart, 0:01:17.855,0:01:20.985 and how can I bring healing to them? 0:01:31.939,0:01:35.069 The first thing to do is to heal yourself. 0:01:40.544,0:01:42.474 Because if society is sick, 0:01:44.003,0:01:46.053 we are sick at the same time. 0:01:52.211,0:01:53.881 Because we are in society 0:01:54.913,0:01:57.293 and the collective suffering of society 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 has influenced us. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And that is why we have to recognize that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we need the healing for ourselves. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If we can not heal ourself, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we can not help heal other people. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And the first thing is to organise our life 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in such a way that we can protect ourself 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 from the kind of energies 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that make you sick. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Like when you watch television. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The film may be full of violence[br]and fear and hate 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and if you allow yourself [br]to watch that film, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you are getting more violence and fear, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and craving and hate in you, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and you are not helping you to heal, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but you are making yourself more sick. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When you eat, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 if you practice mindfulness of eating, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and then you will not bring into your body 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 toxins and poisons. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And that is to protect yourself. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When you go to the market, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you buy only the things [br] 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that will not bring toxins into you 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 – into your body and your mind. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You will not buy the kind of magazine 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that has articles full of fear, anger,[br]hate and craving. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, the problem is how to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 practice the fifth mindfulness training 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 – mindful consumption. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Because our society is a society of consumption. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We believe that the more (we) consume 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the happier we become. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We need money to buy, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but people are consuming a lot more, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and suffer a lot more, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because they don't practice mindful consumption. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You consume food, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you consume magazines, music, feelings, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 books, conversation ... . 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Conversation is consumption. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 What the other person says 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 might be full of toxins – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 may be full of hate and despair. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And if you listen to her for one hour, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you consume. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And if the other person says things 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that have a lot of compassion and joy, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 then you consume good things. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, conversation is also consumption. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The Internet is consumption. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There are many good things, but 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 there are also many toxins ... poisons. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, the first thing we're going to do 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is to protect us from allowing these toxins 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and poisons to enter our body 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and our mind. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And by doing so, we heal ourselves. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And we are happy, compassionate, fresh 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we are in a situation to help people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of our generation, and other people. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And one person cannot do it. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You need friends – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you need another friend, two other friends, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 three other friends. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You need a group of people – a group 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of dedicated people who live in such a way 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that can preserve health 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and joy and compassion. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And as a sangha, you have more hope 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of changing society. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And there are still many Buddhist 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 practitioners in Korea. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And many of them practice only devotion 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 – the Buddhism of devotion: to pray 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to the Buddha, and ask Buddha to give us 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 health and wealth and things like that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And many Buddhists ask for these things -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the things that the Buddha 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 has left behind – like fame, power – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 political power, sex, good food. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And Siddhartha has left all that behind 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in order to become a monk 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and search for true happiness. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And now we are praying the Buddha 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to give us exactly these things that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 he had rejected. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 There are those who ask the Buddha that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 their son, their daughter will be successful 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in their examination ... 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 asking the Buddha for these things. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And one teaching of the Buddha 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is to help us to take care of our body, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to take care of our feelings, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to transform our suffering, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and to have true joy ... true happiness. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 True happiness is not made of power, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 fame, wealth and sex. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 True happiness is made of understanding 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and love and compassion. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So we need a community of people 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who practice according to this 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 teaching of the Buddha – to become 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a healthy and joyful community. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And as we have brothers and sisters 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who are healthy, who are compassionate, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who are in harmony 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 – we can help. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We can help people to heal. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 One person, even a buddha, is not enough. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The Buddha knows that, knew that. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And that's why after enlightenment 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 he began to search for a sangha. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Without a sangha, the Buddha cannot 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 achieve his career of a teacher. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So we, if we want to help society 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to suffer less, to heal – we need a sangha. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And we should consider ourselves 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as the first element of the sangha. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And then, we look for another person 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that lives in harmony and compassion 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and happiness. We do exactly what 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the Buddha did after enlightenment 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 – build a sangha. Without a sangha, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you cannot hope to achieve 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 something important. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Even a buddha is not enough. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 – We need many buddhas. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We need many bodhisattvas. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And when we build a sangha 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with brothers and sisters who are dedicated 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to the practice, there are many 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 bodhisattvas in our sangha. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And, then, we can effectively help society 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to change. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, you may like to go home 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and look around – to recognize 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 people, maybe of your age, first, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 who have the same kind of intention, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 aspiration, and sit down, and discuss 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 about how to set up, how to build 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a community of practitioners who are 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 happy, harmonious, compassionate, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 healthy – and then there is hope. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So our hope is in the sangha. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Without a sangha, we cannot do much. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And we know that the Buddha was 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 an excellent sangha builder. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have to learn from him. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It's not very easy to build a sangha. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 We have to get a lot of love, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 understanding, patience, in order 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to build a sangha. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 When I met Pastor Martin Luther King, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we discussed about sangha building. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I said that without a strong sangha 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we cannot succeed. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And after King was assassinated 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I was very sad, because he 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 could not continue the work 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of sangha building. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So I doubled my efforts 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I tried to build a sangha in Europe 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and in America – because at that time 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I was in exile – because I had dared 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to call out for peace, for the cessation 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of hostility in Vietnam. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And that is why the warring parties, they 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 did not allow me to go home. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And I had to spend 40 years in exile 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in the West. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I left my sangha in Vietnam, and I knew 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that if I wanted to do something, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I had to build a sangha here, in Europe 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and in America 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 – because I knew that without a sangha, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we cannot do much. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And here is my sangha! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 My sangha is (living?) everywhere – 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Europe, and in America and Asia also. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, sangha is our hope. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 If you want to be a bodhisattva, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to help the Buddha, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 you need a sangha. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Sangha building is a very crucial thing to do. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 And everyone of us should be a sangha builder. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 After the retreat, when we go back to our city, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 we have to look around and identify 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 elements of our sangha and build 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a group of people practicing 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 walking meditation, sitting meditation, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 dharma sharing and so on 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that help us to continue the practice -- 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 not to lose our practice – and that help us 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to have a place for other people to come 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and take refuge, and learn the practice. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So, sangha building is very important. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 So that is what you are going to do 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 when you go back to your country. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Half bell) 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 (Bell)
