9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Hi, I'm Medium Invader 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 from the classic video game Space Invaders, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and I want to tell you a little bit 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 about where video games came from. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 A video game is an electronic game 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that has an interface designed for human interaction 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 on a video device. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Simple. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Video games are used by scientists, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the military, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and people like you, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and their evolution has spread across arcades, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 consoles, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 computers, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 smart phones, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and all kinds of other electronics. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 These days video games are everywhere, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but they were actually made in science labs. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In fact, the earliest U.S. video game patent on record 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 was in 1948, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and at the time it was referred to 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as a cathode-ray tube amusement device. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 That's a mouthful! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Some of the earliest video games include 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the Nimrod computer, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 OXO, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Tennis for Two, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and my personal favorite, Spacewar! 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 But none of these early video games 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 were ever sold to the public 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 because there were either too huge 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 or too expensive 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to get out of the lab. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 This all changed when a man named Ralph Baer 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 looked at his television screen and wondered 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 how else it might be used. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In 1972, Baer's idea to get video games 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 out of the science lab and into the living room 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 led to the release of a game console 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 called Odyssey. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Odyssey allowed you to play a game on your TV. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 At about the same time, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 two other people, Nolan Bushnell and Ted Dabney, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 were working on something similar 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 in a little company called Atari. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 You might have heard of it, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and even if you haven't, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 I'm sure that your Dad has. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Atari's first major game release was in 1972, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 an arcade game called Pong. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It was an immediate hit, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it is credited 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 as the first commercially successful video game. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Atari then released a home version of Pong in 1974. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 By 1978, competition between Atari 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and another game company called Midway 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 was heating up. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Midway had licensed an arcade game 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 for the Japanese company, Taito, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that put them on the map. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The game: Space Invaders. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It featured iconic actors like me, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and it went on to become 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the second highest selling arcade game of all time. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Space Invaders also helped kick-off 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 what is known as the Golden Age of Arcade Games. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In response, Atari followed 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with the release of the arcade game Asteroids, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 which ranked sixth on the list 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of highest selling arcade games. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It was a good game, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 but it's no Space Invaders. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 By 1980, color came to arcade games, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and this was also the year 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 that another video gaming milestone was born. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Pac-Man, created by the Japanese company Namco, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 was brought to the U.S. by Midway. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Important to the spread 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of video games into popular culture, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Pac-Man was a character that could be licensed. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It wasn't long before it had a song on the charts, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a Saturday morning television show, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and all sorts of other products. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In just a year, Pac-Man arcade games 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 made over one billion dollars in quarters. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Then, in 1981, a company called Nintendo 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 started making waves in the U.S. video game market 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 with their release of Donkey Kong. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It was the earliest video game 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to have a story line. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 The story went a bit like this: 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Donkey Kong is the pet 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of a carpenter called Jumpman. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Jumpman mistreats his pet ape, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 so the ape steals his girlfriend, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 leaving the game player to assume the role 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of Jumpman and rescue the girl. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Jumpman was eventually renamed to Mario. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Other iconic arcade games from the early 80s include 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Frogger, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Dragon's Lair, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and Mario Brothers. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 Perhaps the last iconic game considered 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to be part of the Golden Age of Arcade Games 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 is Double Dragon. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 It was the first really successful example 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of the beat-them-up genre. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 In was released in 1987, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and, like Donkey Kong, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 it featured a damsel in distress storyline, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a storyline common in many video games. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 By the mid-90s, the Golden Age of Arcade Games 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 was coming to an end, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and the home game console 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 was gaining in popularity. 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 While arcade games continued 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 to decline in sales over the years, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 the popularity of video games was merely beginning, 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 and we'll talk about that 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 a lot more in part two 9:59:59.000,9:59:59.000 of a brief history of video games.
