Path leads off from 0:01:03.300,0:01:08.830 it. Follow that 'til you come across a lone[br]rock. Walk around that and into the woods, 0:01:08.830,0:01:10.840 find the old cart, you're there. 0:01:10.840,0:01:16.860 Okay, got it. Pond, Boulder, Cart. I'm on[br]it. But as soon as we leave the conversation, 0:01:16.860,0:01:21.770 a dotted line appears on my mini-map. So[br]I follow it. I was about to say that. 0:01:26.290,0:01:31.500 The quests in this game are often exciting[br]and funny and thoughtful, but getting to them 0:01:31.500,0:01:37.079 just has you blindly stumbling from waypoint[br]to waypoint, not fully taking in this incredible 0:01:37.079,0:01:42.460 world that CD Projekt Red has established.[br]It's so hard to be truly immersed in a world 0:01:42.460,0:01:47.950 like this when you spend most of your time[br]operating in this artificial video game layer, 0:01:47.950,0:01:52.780 that sits on top of everything else. 0:01:52.780,0:01:59.280 Games with nonlinear levels and big open worlds[br]didn't use to be like this. You actually[br]have to be a part of the world, and become 0:02:37.450,0:02:42.080 immersed in the landscape. Those are arcane retro games and[br]high concept indies. What about modern triple-A 0:03:29.140,0:03:34.599 open worlders, that feel the need to offer[br]dynamically updated maps and helpful hints 0:03:34.599,0:03:36.330 in the name of accessibility? 0:03:36.330,0:03:42.340 Well, how about more optional quests that[br]shun such navigational aids, and encourage 0:03:42.340,0:03:47.000 devoted players to really engage with the[br]world? Like the treasure maps you find in 0:03:47.000,0:03:51.349 games like Red Dead Redemption, Skyrim, and[br]Assassin's Creed Black Flag. 0:03:51.349,0:03:55.290 The idea with these is that you get a scrap[br]of paper which directs you to some hidden 0:03:55.290,0:04:00.170 booty. The map might have a crude drawing[br]of some landmass or a rock or a tree, and 0:04:00.170,0:04:05.159 that's about it. You then need to scour the[br]landscape and find the real-world equivalent 0:04:05.159,0:04:10.459 of this drawing. You're left to figure it[br]out yourself with no hints, no map markers, 0:04:10.459,0:04:12.120 no hand-holding. 0:04:12.120,0:04:16.850 They're fun because they encourage you to[br]really study and explore the game's world. 0:04:16.850,0:04:21.130 And they also have a nice byproduct in that[br]they delay the gratification of getting a 0:04:21.130,0:04:27.090 reward. I always cherished these scraps of[br]paper in games because they give me a chance 0:04:37.870,0:04:42.400 to slow down, take in the environment, and[br]figure things out for myself. 0:04:42.400,0:04:47.350 The other way to encourage proper exploration[br]is with small scavenger hunts, that don't 0:04:47.350,0:04:52.509 actually count as quests. Sometimes they're[br]called hidden quests or unlisted quests by 0:04:52.509,0:04:53.770 the fans. 0:04:53.770,0:04:59.259 One of my most memorable moments in Fallout[br]3 took place in the Anchorage memorial museum. 0:04:59.259,0:05:03.620 I hacked into this computer, and found a note[br]about a hidden stash, behind a busted storage 0:05:03.620,0:05:07.610 door near the service entrance. I just needed[br]to find a floor safe in the clinic. 0:05:07.610,0:05:12.360 Which is this room. How do I know it's the[br]clinic? Well it says clinic on the door which 0:05:12.360,0:05:17.310 is a pretty big giveaway but also there's[br]an operating table and x-rays on the wall 0:05:17.310,0:05:21.949 and a changing screen and a scalpel in the[br]locker. You can see how playing in this fashion 0:05:21.949,0:05:27.190 encourages you to read the world in a very[br]different, but more organic way. 0:05:27.190,0:05:31.050 Anyway. Inside the safe is a component, which[br]lets me open the door. And behind that door 0:05:31.050,0:05:36.030 is some goodies, a key, and a note pointing[br]me to a refrigerator. Which I find and open 0:05:36.030,0:05:40.979 to get my prize: a big load of bottle caps[br]and... A recipe for mirelurk cakes? 0:05:40.979,0:05:45.830 Well, turns out the recipe is just an Easter[br]egg. An inside joke at Bethesda. But I didn't 0:05:45.830,0:05:50.750 care. The real reward was the chance to engage[br]my brain, to study the surroundings, and to 0:05:50.750,0:05:54.720 follow clues instead of bread crumbs. 0:05:54.720,0:06:00.389 So that's why I'm wandering the wasteland[br]in Fallout 4 without waypoints and quest markers. 0:06:00.389,0:06:05.250 I want to be lead by my own curiosity, and[br]not by a compass. I've been playing Fallout 4 for 0:06:34.610,0:06:39.970 around 10 hours and finished exactly two quests.[br]The game simply isn't designed to be played 0:06:39.970,0:06:43.919 this way - like how you can also turn off[br]all the quest helpers in The Witcher 3 but then 0:06:43.919,0:06:45.059 some guy will say... 0:06:45.059,0:06:50.399 MILAN NORAN: The patrol has been lost, somewhere along the south shore of Lake Wyndemere 0:06:50.400,0:06:54.789 and you soon realise there are no signposts[br]and no place names on your map and you can't 0:06:54.789,0:06:59.550 ask for directions. So you try and find it[br]yourself and you end up in a bandit camp and you 0:06:59.550,0:07:03.590 run away and oh god is that a bear? But, for now,[br]at least, it'd be cool to see a few more optional 0:07:16.990,0:07:20.680 missions in games that don't show up on your[br]map or your quest log, and let you take a 0:07:20.680,0:07:25.630 moment to really soak the world in.
