Of course you don't." 00:00:31.301 --> 00:00:10.672 In our hyper-connected world, 00:00:32.952 --> 99:59:59.999 where most of us carry around handheld devices 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that keep us connected to the world at all times, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and tech companies monitor our behavior 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and purchasing habits constantly, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 a game in which you harness that technological web 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to disrupt the schemes of powerful corporations 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 makes perfect sense. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But with 2014's Watch Dogs, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Ubisoft failed to turn this premise 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 into a compelling game. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Watch Dogs 2 makes some meaningful improvements 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on its predecessor. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It gives us a more memorable hero 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and supporting cast, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and a San Francisco that exudes a 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 bit more more personality 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 than the first games' setting did. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Unfortunately, Watch Dogs 2 still fails 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where it matters most: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 trotting out a series of crushingly-repetitive 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 missions that never come close to making you feel 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 like a hacker extraordinaire. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Nearly every main story mission 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 has you infiltrating some heavily-guarded facility 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or another, in order to steal something, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or hack something, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and once you find a strategy that works for you, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 it's very easy to fall into a pattern of approaching 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all of these missions in more or less the same way. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Your character, Marcus Holloway, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 can't take much punishment, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and the environments are filled with enemies 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who will immediately fall for more reinforcements 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 at any sign of trouble -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so you're discouraged from relying on the 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all-out, guns-blazing approach. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This makes sense in a game that wants you 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to use your hacker abilities to tackle 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the situations you're faced with, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but because failure in this game can be 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so punishing, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and send you back so far, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I tended to complete most missions 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by using the same tactic; 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the core of my strategy was hanging back, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 hacking into the building's security systems, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 picking off the enemies who could call 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for reinforcements one-by-one, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by forging criminal records and having police 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 come in and arrest or kill them. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was passive and often tedious, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but it got the job done. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Of course, sometimes it's a strength 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 when a game punishes you for failure. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In games with precise combat, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the prospect of a significant setback 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 can raise the stakes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 encouraging you to master the mechanics, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and making your victories all the more rewarding. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But Watch Dogs 2 is no such game. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is no Dark Souls. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is a by-the-numbers, open world game 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with mediocre gun play and systems that interact 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 so erratically, that all you can do is try to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 manage them well enough to complete 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 your objective and get out alive. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As shabby as the mission design is, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the game deserves some credit for its 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 obviously well-intentioned efforts to acknowledge 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the existence of structural racism. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 At one point, the young black protagonist, Marcus, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 discusses the racial profiling tactics that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 tagged him as a criminal risk. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And his brother-in-arms, Horatio, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 whose day job is at the Google stand-in, "Nudle," 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 comments frankly on the racism and 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 condencension he experiences as one of the only 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 people of color in an 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 overwhelmingly-white company. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "You haven't experienced 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 corporate life until you're the only brother 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in a meeting and have to represent 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 all of blackdom." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Jesus!" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The presence of Miranda, a black trans 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 councilwoman who does what she can 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to help Marcus and his colleagues 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 in the hacker collective known as "DedSec" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is also welcome. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 On the other hand, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Latinx people in Watch Dogs 2 are 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 primarily represented as the most clichéd 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 kind of gang members imaginable. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 As important as it us that games give us heroes 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and supporting characters that break from 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the long-established molds, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there's more to great characterization than 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 simply ticking off a few boxes 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 on a diversity checklist. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And Watch Dogs 2 falls short here. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Its characters relate to each other more in 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 geek, sci-fi references and cheesy one-liners, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 than in anything that actually reveals to us 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who they are, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 or what makes them tick. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So it's hard to get invested in their struggle 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and their relationships with each other. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Come on, Wesley Crusher! Launch waits!" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Bitch, please. I'm clearly Sisko." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Jake Sisko?" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "CAPTAIN Sisko." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The San Francisco setting of Watch Dogs 2 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is recognizable but doesn't feel authentic -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 despite being packed with landmarks 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and familiar landmarks, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 including San Francisco's greatest treasure 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the sea lions down at Pier 39. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It's great to see Pride flags flying in 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 certain parts of the city, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and Watch Dogs 2 makes no effort 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to minimize or deny SF's queer community. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But for all that, the game's concerns 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 feel oddly detached from the real issues 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that face San Francisco today. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Graffiti that reads 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "ARTISTS USED TO LIVE HERE" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 poignantly speaks to the fact that 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 entire communities are being driven out of the city 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as tech companies make life here unsustainable 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for so many. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And the occasional passerby may make mention 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of the gentrification that's taking place: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "Super gentrification! It's wretched!" 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So why isn't DedSec using its power 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to stand up for marginalized communities? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Why isn't DedSec fighting for affordable housing, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and against the police injustice 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that specifically targets people of color? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Why not confront the things that are really happening here? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The things that really matter? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The people who call San Francisco home? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Perhaps the strangest thing of all 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 about Watch Dogs 2, though, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is its uneasy relationship with power. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Ostensibly, DedSec is all about 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 waking up the populace, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 getting them to understand 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 how power is abused by politicians, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 tech companies, and government agencies 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to limit people's freedom 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to act and think for themselves. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But what DedSec never does, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 is turn that questioning lens on its own use 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and abuse, of power. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 It was never lost on me that, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 playing as a young black man 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who had been profiled as a likely criminal 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because of his race, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I then harnessed the power of techonology 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to force criminal records for dozens and dozens 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 of innocent people, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and watched them get marched off 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by the cops themselves. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 But hey, what was I gonna do? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I had a mission to complete. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "We will not stand idle while that happens." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "DedSec is given you truth. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Do what you will."
