0:00:00.000,0:00:05.081 The-- The VA is an organization[br]that has a mission to protect 0:00:05.081,0:00:07.821 and to serve the needs[br]of our veterans, 0:00:07.821,0:00:12.151 those who go and are willing[br]to sacrifice all for our country. 0:00:12.151,0:00:15.731 And unfortunately what we're[br]seeing is that even after 0:00:15.731,0:00:21.648 all of these years --both in the[br]post 9/11 era of veterans 0:00:21.648,0:00:24.578 but also with Vietnam veterans,[br]Korean War veterans, 0:00:24.578,0:00:27.390 those who've come before us--[br]the-- the services are still 0:00:27.390,0:00:28.630 falling short. 0:00:28.630,0:00:30.860 And this area of post-[br]traumatic stress I think 0:00:30.860,0:00:33.880 is one of the main areas[br]where that's true. 0:00:33.880,0:00:36.582 There continues to be a[br]stigma around this, 0:00:36.582,0:00:39.272 whether people are willing[br]to admit it or not, 0:00:39.272,0:00:43.590 both within the military and[br]also with people transition back to 0:00:43.590,0:00:45.354 their civilian lives. 0:00:45.354,0:00:49.654 I've experienced it through some[br]of my friends who I've served with, 0:00:49.654,0:00:53.654 who've come home really, really[br]struggling and 0:00:53.654,0:00:58.128 having a hard time finding the best[br]place that can really help them. 0:00:59.374,0:01:03.584 This is one of the drivers[br]behind the continued rate 0:01:03.584,0:01:08.540 of veterans' suicide that we're[br]seeing in our country and 0:01:08.540,0:01:12.210 shows that we have to take[br]a more holistic approach, 0:01:12.210,0:01:14.880 and this is what I would[br]lead as president, 0:01:14.880,0:01:18.810 where as a veteran I understand [br]in a deeply personal way 0:01:18.810,0:01:22.810 who pays the price for war[br]and how heavy that price is, 0:01:22.810,0:01:26.430 and will ensure that our VA[br]leaves no veteran behind, 0:01:26.430,0:01:29.288 that every single veteran gets[br]the care that they need. 0:01:29.288,0:01:32.108 And as we look at post-[br]traumatic stress, 0:01:32.108,0:01:36.478 there are many different levels[br]of how it impacts people 0:01:36.478,0:01:38.288 on a whole spectrum. 0:01:38.288,0:01:42.368 Some very, very extreme situations;[br]some may be less extreme. 0:01:42.368,0:01:49.455 But every person heals and finds[br]their therapy and their path forward 0:01:49.455,0:01:51.127 in a different way. 0:01:51.127,0:01:53.407 And as a VA, as a government,[br]as a society, 0:01:53.407,0:01:57.897 we need to be able to help[br]support that-- that journey. 0:01:58.842,0:02:02.102 I-- I had a woman who'd work[br]for me in my congressional office. 0:02:02.102,0:02:06.322 She's a military spouse.[br]Her husband had many deployments 0:02:06.611,0:02:10.001 and had been exposed to some[br]of the most extreme environments 0:02:10.001,0:02:14.341 and situations that really had a--[br]deeply, deeply impacted him. 0:02:14.763,0:02:18.010 He got to the point where he[br]couldn't fly, he couldn't travel. 0:02:18.010,0:02:20.623 And they didn't know what to do[br]to be able to help him. 0:02:20.623,0:02:23.885 He didn't want to just take drugs[br]to try to numb the pain. 0:02:23.885,0:02:27.075 And for him, their breakthrough[br]happened when they had a plant 0:02:27.075,0:02:29.245 that was dying on their front step. 0:02:29.245,0:02:31.866 And he was home, and he just[br]started watering the plant. 0:02:31.866,0:02:33.996 Taking care of the plant,[br]trimming the plant. 0:02:33.996,0:02:36.476 And starting to bring this plant[br]back to life. 0:02:36.476,0:02:40.206 And he experiences, as well[br]as his wife saw, that that was 0:02:40.471,0:02:44.471 awakening something in him[br]that had been lost for a long time. 0:02:44.777,0:02:48.617 Long story short, now they have[br]a farm with many acres. 0:02:48.617,0:02:51.717 He has found his path towards[br]peace by working the land 0:02:51.717,0:02:55.006 and is inviting other veterans[br]there to come and join him, 0:02:55.006,0:03:01.616 and finding that connection with the[br]earth, and growing food and plants 0:03:01.616,0:03:04.356 as a way forward for them. 0:03:04.356,0:03:06.976 Meditation is something others[br]are finding. 0:03:06.976,0:03:09.386 Working with animals, horses, dogs. 0:03:09.386,0:03:13.386 Others-- others through surfing,[br]actually. I've-- I've been surfing with 0:03:14.164,0:03:19.174 severely wounded warriors,[br]disabled veterans, and others 0:03:19.174,0:03:23.844 who are finding their[br]empowerment once again 0:03:23.844,0:03:26.464 in the ocean, and it's[br]an incredible thing. 0:03:26.464,0:03:29.464 We've gotta support this[br]holistic approach to actually 0:03:29.464,0:03:33.164 treating the root cause[br]rather than just seeing 0:03:33.164,0:03:37.224 mental health treatment and[br]treatment for post-traumatic stress 0:03:37.224,0:03:43.214 as something that can only[br]be responded to with more drugs.
