land, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they may have looked up into the sky 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and said, "Hey, it would be nice to go to the clouds, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I'm going to fly." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "You can't break the law of gravity, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 there's no way you can fly." 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And yet, nature has invented, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 multiple and independent times, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 ways to fly. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I love to study these animals that break the rules, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 because every time they break a rule, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 they invent something new 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that make it possible for us to be here today. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 These animals did not get the memo. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 They broke the rules. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 So, if we're going to study animals that break the rules, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 shouldn't how we study them also break the rules? 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 I think that we need to renew our spirit of exploration. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Rather than bringing nature into our laboratories 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and interrogating there, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 we need to bring our science into the majestic laboratory that is nature. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And there, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with our modern, technological armamentarium, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 interrogate every new form of life we find, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and any new biological attribute that we may find. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We actually need to bring all of our intelligence 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to becoming stupid again -- 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 clueless in front of the immensity of the unknown. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because after all, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 science is not really about knowledge. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Science is about ignorance. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 That's what we do. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Once, Antoine de Saint-Exupery wrote, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 "If you want to build a ship, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 don't drum up people to collect wood 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and don't assign them tasks and work, paraphrase Exupery 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that we scientists need to teach our students 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 to long for the endless immensity of the sea ... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that is our ignorance. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We homo sapiens are the only species we know of 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that is driven to scientific inquiry. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 We, like all other species on this planet, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 are inextricably woven into the history of life on this planet. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 And I think I'm little wrong when I say life is a mystery. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Because I think that life is actually an open secret 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 that has been beckoning our species for
