0:02:08.050,0:02:13.370 We did a study of hundreds of[br]students making a very difficult 0:02:13.370,0:02:20.320 school transition to seventh grade,[br]which is about 13, 14 years old. 0:02:20.320,0:02:23.110 In my country,[br]this is when the work gets harder, 0:02:23.110,0:02:28.650 the grading gets more stringent and[br]lots of kids turn off to school. 0:02:28.650,0:02:32.700 At the beginning of seventh grade,[br]we measured students mindsets and 0:02:32.700,0:02:36.860 then we monitored their grades[br]over the next two years. 0:02:36.860,0:02:38.000 Look what happened. 0:02:39.390,0:02:40.900 The students with the fixed and 0:02:40.900,0:02:47.280 growth mindsets entered seventh grade[br]with identical past math achievement. 0:02:47.280,0:02:51.070 But by the end of their[br]first term of seventh grade, 0:02:51.070,0:02:57.800 their grades jumped apart and continued[br]to diverge over the next two years. 0:02:57.800,0:02:59.136 Why did that happen? 0:02:59.136,0:03:04.290 First, we showed that 0:03:04.290,0:03:10.830 the kids with a fixed mindset[br]only care about looking smart. 0:03:10.830,0:03:13.500 Look smart and never look dumb. 0:03:13.500,0:03:17.700 Therefore they avoided[br]challenging learning task and 0:03:17.700,0:03:21.790 they didn't study deeply[br]in order to learn. 0:03:21.790,0:03:26.780 But those with the growth mindset,[br]there was no risk. 0:03:26.780,0:03:29.260 They weren't showing how smart they were. 0:03:29.260,0:03:38.230 They just dove into challenging learning[br]tasks with gusto like the babies. 0:03:38.230,0:03:40.660 The second thing was that 0:03:40.660,0:03:45.380 two mindsets created very[br]different beliefs about effort. 0:03:45.380,0:03:47.920 And this is critically important. 0:03:47.920,0:03:51.360 In a fixed mindset, effort is a bad thing. 0:03:52.510,0:03:57.910 Students believe if you really have[br]ability, you shouldn't need effort. 0:03:57.910,0:04:02.790 And if you have to apply effort,[br]it means you are not very smart. 0:04:02.790,0:04:05.910 They subscribe to Homer Simpson's motto. 0:04:05.910,0:04:08.470 Trying is the first step towards failure. 0:04:11.170,0:04:16.745 But in the growth mindset,[br]kids understand that hard work and 0:04:16.745,0:04:22.220 practice, that's what makes you smarter,[br]and they also understand 0:04:22.220,0:04:26.840 that even genius' have had to work[br]hard for their great discoveries. 0:04:26.840,0:04:28.610 So they enjoy effort. 0:04:28.610,0:04:30.860 It makes them feel like they're learning, 0:04:30.860,0:04:33.600 rather than making them[br]feel like they're dumb. 0:04:34.950,0:04:39.150 And the third thing we[br]found was that the mindsets 0:04:39.150,0:04:44.290 created completely different[br]attitudes towards setbacks. 0:04:44.290,0:04:50.070 In a fixed mindset,[br]setbacks have a really negative meaning. 0:04:50.070,0:04:51.950 They mean you're not smart. 0:04:51.950,0:04:56.600 If you were smart, you wouldn't be[br]making mistakes or having failures. 0:04:56.600,0:05:03.670 So their tendency is to get defensive,[br]to hide mistakes, to conceal deficiencies. 0:05:03.670,0:05:07.340 But in a growth mindset,[br]there's this realization 0:05:09.050,0:05:11.430 that set backs are an actual[br]part of learning. 0:05:12.570,0:05:16.850 And that you need to confront your[br]mistakes and deficiencies and 0:05:16.850,0:05:17.440 learn from them. 0:05:17.440,0:05:23.750 I have to say with the way I got into[br]this field was that I was testing 0:05:23.750,0:05:28.950 some kids and they were reached[br]some problem they couldn't solve. 0:05:28.950,0:05:32.040 And one of them said, I love a challenge. 0:05:32.040,0:05:36.270 Or another said,[br]I was hoping this would be informative. 0:05:37.280,0:05:37.800 And so 0:05:37.800,0:05:42.780 here were these ten year olds having[br]these exuberant reactions to setbacks. 0:05:43.780,0:05:47.280 Ultimately I understood[br]they had a growth mindset. 0:05:49.940,0:05:55.436 We asked our seventh graders[br]what they would do after a poor 0:05:55.436,0:05:59.700 score on the first exam in a new course. 0:05:59.700,0:06:01.670 Here's what they said. 0:06:01.670,0:06:04.410 Those who endorsed a fixed mindset said, 0:06:04.410,0:06:08.240 I'd spend less time on[br]this subject from now on. 0:06:08.240,0:06:10.379 I would try to cheat on the next test. 0:06:12.910,0:06:14.180 Well, think about it. 0:06:16.290,0:06:19.660 This set back meant that[br]weren't smart at it and 0:06:19.660,0:06:23.050 effort isn't something they enjoy or[br]value. 0:06:23.050,0:06:24.830 What are their options? 0:06:24.830,0:06:29.050 But in a growth mindset, they'd said I'd[br]work harder in this class from now on. 0:06:29.050,0:06:31.400 I'd spend more time studying for the test. 0:06:32.980,0:06:37.882 Let me show you how this works[br]in the brain, in this study 0:06:37.882,0:06:42.570 the researchers monitored from 0:06:42.570,0:06:47.740 the brain as students worked on a task and[br]made errors. 0:06:47.740,0:06:52.679 You see this red hot brain on the right,[br]those are growth mindset students 0:06:53.790,0:06:57.750 detecting the errors,[br]processing them and correcting them. 0:06:59.230,0:07:04.382 On the left, you have that[br]fixed mindset brain looking so 0:07:04.382,0:07:10.169 cool, fleeing, running from[br]the errors as quickly as possible. 0:07:10.169,0:07:15.520 The good news is that when students[br]were taught a growth mindset, 0:07:15.520,0:07:17.477 they looked like that. 0:07:19.947,0:07:25.450 So a fixed mindset doesn't give[br]students a way to handle difficulty. 0:07:25.450,0:07:29.520 They give up, run away, become defensive. 0:07:29.520,0:07:35.560 When you see students acting bored or[br]acting out or blaming the teacher, 0:07:35.560,0:07:42.360 it is often trying to hide the fixed[br]mindset of fear, of not looking smart. 0:07:44.180,0:07:47.020 How are these mindsets transmitted? 0:07:47.020,0:07:52.400 The most interesting way that we've[br]studied is how they are transmitted 0:07:52.400,0:07:57.060 through the praise parents,[br]teachers, adults give to kids. 0:07:58.310,0:08:02.570 We undertook this research at[br]the height of the self-esteem movement. 0:08:02.570,0:08:07.580 When the gurus were telling everyone,[br]just praise kids lavishly, 0:08:07.580,0:08:10.770 globally, praise their talent,[br]praise their abilities. 0:08:11.880,0:08:17.280 In 15 or more years of research,[br]we have shown 0:08:17.280,0:08:22.420 that praising children's ability[br]backfires, it harms them. 0:08:23.490,0:08:29.075 It does not create growth in young minds. 0:08:29.075,0:08:30.620 Here's how we found this out. 0:08:32.030,0:08:36.299 In some studies, we brought ten year[br]olds into a room in their school. 0:08:36.299,0:08:42.741 And we gave them initially ten[br]problems from this non-verbal IQ test. 0:08:42.741,0:08:49.770 Then after the ten problems,[br]we gave each child one form of praise. 0:08:49.770,0:08:52.520 Some children were praised for[br]their intelligence. 0:08:53.690,0:08:58.600 Wow, that's a really good score,[br]you must be smart at this. 0:08:58.600,0:09:03.432 Some were praised for the process[br]they engaged in, like their effort. 0:09:03.432,0:09:07.030 Or their strategies that[br]could be in other studies or 0:09:07.030,0:09:09.494 their focus or their persistence. 0:09:09.494,0:09:14.419 Wow, that's a really good score,[br]you must have tried really hard. 0:09:14.419,0:09:17.859 And a third group was told, wow,[br]that's a really good score. 0:09:17.859,0:09:22.130 But we won't talk much about them,[br]they were right in the middle. 0:09:22.130,0:09:22.930 What happened? 0:09:24.850,0:09:30.800 First, we found that praising intelligence 0:09:30.800,0:09:34.900 did indeed put students[br]into a fixed mindset. 0:09:34.900,0:09:40.839 It said, I can look inside of you and[br]measure how smart you are. 0:09:42.810,0:09:48.020 Whereas praising the process put[br]them into more of a growth mindset. 0:09:48.020,0:09:53.040 But to me, the most astonishing[br]thing was that praising 0:09:53.040,0:09:56.570 intelligence turned kids off to learning. 0:09:57.940,0:10:01.040 When we gave them a choice[br]after the praise, hey, 0:10:01.040,0:10:02.820 what do you wanna work on now? 0:10:02.820,0:10:07.470 Something hard, you might make mistakes,[br]but you'll learn something new. 0:10:07.470,0:10:12.990 Or something you're good at,[br]so you're sure to do well. 0:10:12.990,0:10:14.750 Most of the kids praised for 0:10:14.750,0:10:20.910 intelligence chose the easy task[br]where they were sure to do well. 0:10:20.910,0:10:26.290 I like to say they didn't wanna risk[br]their newly minted gifted label. 0:10:26.290,0:10:27.690 But those praised for 0:10:27.690,0:10:33.500 the process overwhelmingly chose[br]the hard task they could learn from. 0:10:36.270,0:10:41.260 Later, we gave everybody a hard[br]set of problems to work on. 0:10:42.810,0:10:47.298 And those who were praised for[br]their intelligence, 0:10:47.298,0:10:52.704 after these hard problems,[br]when we went back to the easy ones, 0:10:52.704,0:10:56.282 showed deeply undermined performance. 0:10:56.282,0:11:00.220 They did not recover from[br]the difficult problems. 0:11:00.220,0:11:05.670 Telling them that they were smart[br]made their IQ lower on that test 0:11:05.670,0:11:07.950 when they encounter difficulty. 0:11:07.950,0:11:12.130 But the kids praised for[br]the process really flourished. 0:11:15.260,0:11:19.882 We just two months ago published a study, 0:11:19.882,0:11:25.835 where we looked at mothers'[br]praise to their babies. 0:11:25.835,0:11:29.800 The babies were one to three years of age. 0:11:29.800,0:11:35.180 And we showed that the mothers' praise[br]to these babies predicted the child's 0:11:35.180,0:11:40.300 mindset and desire for[br]challenge five years later. 0:11:40.300,0:11:42.350 So it starts young. 0:11:42.350,0:11:45.870 It can always be changed,[br]but it starts young. 0:11:45.870,0:11:50.676 And now when I hear a mother[br]telling her baby in the airport 0:11:50.676,0:11:53.490 that he's a genius, I stop her. 0:11:53.490,0:11:58.030 >> [LAUGH][br]>> Other research also 0:11:58.030,0:12:03.232 showing parents' praise to their[br]older kids too is predicting 0:12:03.232,0:12:08.154 that child's mindset and[br]desire for challenge over time. 0:12:10.915,0:12:13.900 I've fallen in love with a new word, yet. 0:12:13.900,0:12:20.225 And I think that's another way[br]we can convey mindsets to kids. 0:12:20.225,0:12:26.492 I learned of a high school in Chicago,[br]where when students didn't pass a unit, 0:12:26.492,0:12:31.750 instead of getting a failing grade,[br]they got the grade, not yet. 0:12:33.690,0:12:36.240 And I thought, isn't that beautiful? 0:12:36.240,0:12:38.938 If you get a failing grade,[br]you're nowhere. 0:12:38.938,0:12:41.890 You're dumb, you're at the starting gate. 0:12:41.890,0:12:45.870 But not yet means, hey,[br]you're on that learning curve, 0:12:45.870,0:12:49.570 maybe you're not at the finish line,[br]but you're on that curve. 0:12:49.570,0:12:55.460 So, if a student says,[br]I'm not good at, same as, yet. 0:12:57.260,0:12:59.424 I can't do it, yet. 0:12:59.424,0:13:01.470 Get back on that learning curve. 0:13:01.470,0:13:04.450 I tried, but it didn't work yet. 0:13:04.450,0:13:09.460 It tells them, we have faith in[br]their ability to learn over time, 0:13:09.460,0:13:11.201 and we expect them to. 0:13:14.423,0:13:19.055 When we saw that a growth mindset had so[br]many benefits, we asked, 0:13:19.055,0:13:21.720 could we teach it to kids?
