Hackerspace is an open creative space open in the sense than anyone who deals mostly but not exclusevily with technology, with anything that has to do either with constructions or software and hardware can come here to exchange ideas, to cooperate, to work together on a project Considering that many times we exchange ideas about projects or some times even working together on a project we thought why not having a physical place where we can meet instead of communitating through internet This is Makerbot, a 3d printer, that mostly prints plastic It's a kit that costs around $700 It's manual assembled It was assembeld by a Greek team Hacker is one who likes to experiment, likes to share knowledge and cooperating with other people For instance there several Open-Source projects developed in here Another example is the Linux lessons that taking place for free in a monthly basis and have gathered a lot of interest from people Hackerspace is open and doesn't require any fee to participate At this point there are 22 people, working as operators who are responsible for administrating this place in a daily basis and they're also responnsible for the financial obligations in order to keep track with the operational costs Here we have an OLPC, meaning One Laptop per Child also known as $100 laptop It's a project that started some years ago from MIT but it's independent from the first time It's a project with the goal to create a very cheap laptop in large scale production for developing countries Today we have these kind of laptop on schools in Africa and South America It runs on Open-Source software, a variant of Linux and it's significant to mention that there is an OLPC Greece initiative where you can find about 600 such laptops on Greek schools If we visit hackerspaces.org which is the central website for all the hackerspaces around the world we'll see many of them at USA, where this movement started, but also in Europe we'll see countries like Germany or France where is hard to find a city without a hackerspace In Greece at the moment we know that besides Athens Hackerspace there is another one in Patras Each Hackerspace has its own character that makes it unique At Hackerspace.gr we have decided from the very beginning to act in the spirit of Open-Source culture meaning that anything that is being developed or even discussed in here is open to everyone, nothing is closed Furthermore many discussions are taking place on subjects that are less technical for instance about digital rights issues In the last few days we had discussions about the famous SOPA and ACTA plans or about P2P economy and alternative economy models
