Yes, it’s exactly what you think it is: 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 instead of a kiss, sex with the rescued victim is the player’s reward. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 “That was gonna get ugly. You saved us!” 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 “My pleasure, ladies.” 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 “Thank you, thank you. Thank you.” 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 “You saved my life. video games. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The trope frames female bodies as collectible, as tractable or as consumable 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and positions women as status symbols 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 designed to validate the masculinity of presumed straight male players. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 There’s some overlap between the Damsel in Distress and Women as Reward 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 but they function differently. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 While the Damsel in Distress trope uses women 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 as a plot device to motivate male heroes, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the Women as Reward trope presents women as a formalized reward mechanism, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 meaning that the reward is coded into the game system itself. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The result of this incentive structure is that access to women’s bodies, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 women’s affection or women’s sexuality is reduced to a simple equation that guarantees 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 delivery as long as the correct set of inputs are entered into the system. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 In this way the Women as Reward trope helps foster a sense of entitlement 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 where players are encouraged to view women as something they’ve earned the right to 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 by virtue of their gaming actions, skills or accomplishments. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 This is illustrated in arcade classics like Joe and Mac 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 after players save the damsel in both games, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 she will bestow a kiss on the character who earned the most points on that stage. 99:59:59.999 99:59:59.999 these secrets are usually difficult to find but are meant to be discovered as rewards 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for particularly industrious gamers. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Easter Eggs can be hidden messages, items, secret characters or random events, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and their inclusion encourages experimentation with the game’s systems 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 and mechanics in order to uncover these extra treasures. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Some can be found inside game environments, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 while others require a cheat code to unlock. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 For example, if players input a specific button sequence while starting up 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 the 1991 role-playing game Rings of Power the title screen would change. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 By pressing down, right, A, B, C and the start button, players were rewarded 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 with an image of a topless woman 99:59:59.999 to reward players with women’s bodies. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Tony Hawk Pro Skater 4 included a secret unlockable character named Daisy, 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 who bore the likeness of porn star Jenna Jameson. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Daisy’s sexualized appearance and skateboard tricks are designed as a reward 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 for those players who unlocked her. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 One way to do that is by entering this code 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 Probably one of the most famous Women as Reward easter eggs 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 brings us back to Samus Aran. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 The original Metroid used a password system to save progress. 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 By inputting the secret code You didn’t like it? It’s pretty sturdy and protects my body quite nicely... 99:59:59.999 --> 99:59:59.999 See?
