WEBVTT 00:00:03.139 --> 00:00:04.139 Hey! 00:00:04.139 --> 00:00:07.509 Welcome to Make Thrift Buy, the show where YOU send in clothes that you’ve seen online 00:00:07.509 --> 00:00:12.080 – clothes that are either expensive, mass-produced, or the brand just doesn’t make efforts to 00:00:12.080 --> 00:00:15.660 pay their workers a living wage – and then I do my best to recreate them. 00:00:15.660 --> 00:00:19.710 So today I’m doing an item that’s been suggested by … oh… about a BILLION of 00:00:19.710 --> 00:00:20.710 you. 00:00:20.710 --> 00:00:25.019 Coming in at a cool $95 are these pair of mom jeans from Topshop, that feature little 00:00:25.019 --> 00:00:26.019 windows for your knees. 00:00:26.019 --> 00:00:31.199 Assumedly the windows are there so that your knees can gaze out upon the world, no longer 00:00:31.199 --> 00:00:33.650 constricted by cruel, opaque fabrics. 00:00:33.650 --> 00:00:34.650 #freetheknee 00:00:34.650 --> 00:00:39.370 Anyway – the internet has been divided by these jeans and my social media has been flooded 00:00:39.370 --> 00:00:44.410 with requests asking me to try and recreate them, so I’m basically just doing them so 00:00:44.410 --> 00:00:49.379 I can go back on my twitter account without having to scroll through pages and pages of 00:00:49.379 --> 00:00:50.520 these damn jeans. 00:00:50.520 --> 00:00:52.040 So let’s get started. 00:00:52.040 --> 00:00:53.040 *** 00:00:53.040 --> 00:00:56.640 So I took myself to the thrift store – I went to a warehouse sized-one that I know 00:00:56.640 --> 00:01:01.090 has a lot of pairs of jeans – and the quest for a suitable pair of mom jeans commenced. 00:01:01.090 --> 00:01:06.190 After trying on like 30 different pairs of jeans – I finally found my perfect pair 00:01:06.190 --> 00:01:07.420 of mom jeans. 00:01:07.420 --> 00:01:10.920 They fit snugly on the waist but they are nice and loose on the legs. 00:01:10.920 --> 00:01:14.869 The main thing you want to look for in any pair of jeans you’re using for this project, 00:01:14.869 --> 00:01:18.000 is that it should have lots of loose fabric around the knee. 00:01:18.000 --> 00:01:20.960 This project won’t really work with tight-fitting jeans. 00:01:20.960 --> 00:01:25.220 So while wearing the jeans, I grabbed some chalk and I roughly measured out where I wanted 00:01:25.220 --> 00:01:27.550 the top and the bottom of the cutouts to be. 00:01:27.550 --> 00:01:31.189 As you can see, I’m bending my leg a lot in this process, that’s because I wanted 00:01:31.189 --> 00:01:34.369 to make sure my knees would be around the middle of the cutout. 00:01:34.369 --> 00:01:37.829 If you measure only while your legs are straight you’ll probably make the cutouts a little 00:01:37.829 --> 00:01:39.090 bit too high. 00:01:39.090 --> 00:01:43.479 These jeans also had a really cute pocket on the side down here, but unfortunately it’s 00:01:43.479 --> 00:01:47.259 in the way of the cutouts, so I had to remove the top part of the pocket just to make life 00:01:47.259 --> 00:01:48.259 easier. 00:01:48.259 --> 00:01:51.930 Then, I laid the jeans out flat on my table, and I made the chalk lines thicker and I also 00:01:51.930 --> 00:01:56.770 made sure they were even on both legs and the same height as each other by using a ruler. 00:01:56.770 --> 00:02:00.970 I then made small chalk marks exactly in the centre of the pant legs, by measuring the 00:02:00.970 --> 00:02:05.850 width of the pant leg and dividing this by 2, and then I drew on rectangles that were 00:02:05.850 --> 00:02:07.930 4 and a half by 7 inches. 00:02:07.930 --> 00:02:12.090 Of course, the length of your rectangles might differ slightly depending on where you drew 00:02:12.090 --> 00:02:16.290 your first chalk marks but this is a good ball-park measurement of the size that your 00:02:16.290 --> 00:02:17.430 cutouts should be. 00:02:17.430 --> 00:02:21.879 Then using a pair of fabric scissors I chopped out the fabric inside the rectangles. 00:02:21.879 --> 00:02:27.010 Then at the corner of each rectangle, I made small slits like this at 45 degrees, each 00:02:27.010 --> 00:02:28.200 about half an inch long. 00:02:30.560 --> 00:02:35.120 Then, I turned my jeans INSIDE OUT, make sure you turn them inside out before this next 00:02:35.120 --> 00:02:37.860 step, and I folded the edges of the cutouts back like this. 00:02:37.860 --> 00:02:42.209 Now, we’re going to sew these pieces down, using some thread in a matching colour to 00:02:42.209 --> 00:02:43.340 the jeans. 00:02:43.340 --> 00:02:46.901 Now you can hand-stitch this, but if you’re doing this on a sewing machine, you’ll need 00:02:46.901 --> 00:02:51.000 to do some clever folding so that you don’t sew through the back of the jeans as well. 00:02:51.000 --> 00:02:54.910 So, I manipulated my jeans like this, to make sure that I’d only be sewing through the 00:02:54.910 --> 00:02:58.520 FRONT fabric of the jeans, and then I sewed down this edge using a straight stitch and 00:02:58.580 --> 00:03:00.460 a normal sewing needle. 00:03:02.840 --> 00:03:06.180 And I repeated this for all of the raw edges around the cutouts. 00:03:06.180 --> 00:03:11.280 Annnnd don’t goof up and sew one of these flaps on the wrong way like I did here – I 00:03:11.280 --> 00:03:15.150 accidentally sewed this flap to the right side of the jeans, and didn’t notice that 00:03:15.150 --> 00:03:19.760 I'd done this until after I’d sewn on the plastic – and I spent a lot of time unpicking 00:03:19.760 --> 00:03:20.760 my stitches. 00:03:20.760 --> 00:03:21.790 Don't do this! 00:03:21.790 --> 00:03:24.310 ANYWAY, next I grabbed my plastic material. 00:03:24.310 --> 00:03:29.390 This is flexible PVC plastic that I had remaining from this plastic skirt that you guys got 00:03:29.390 --> 00:03:34.579 me to make back in episode #33 – I think it was originally meant to be a table protector? 00:03:34.579 --> 00:03:39.189 – and I laid it on top of one of my cutouts, and then I drew out a rectangle shape directly 00:03:39.189 --> 00:03:43.000 onto the plastic, making the rectangle slightly larger than the cutout. 00:03:43.000 --> 00:03:44.000 And… 00:03:44.000 --> 00:03:47.790 damn, I accidentally drew onto my fabric here, luckily the jeans are still inside out so 00:03:47.790 --> 00:03:49.110 it doesn’t really matter! 00:03:49.110 --> 00:03:53.080 Anyway I finished drawing on that rectangle and then I cut it out. 00:03:53.080 --> 00:03:57.530 Now actually sewing the plastic onto the inside of the cutouts is a little bit tricky and 00:03:57.530 --> 00:04:02.000 took me a while to work out, because there’s a lot of fabric that you DON’T want to sew 00:04:02.000 --> 00:04:03.260 through in the way! 00:04:03.260 --> 00:04:07.160 If you just put this straight on your sewing machine now you will have a lot of difficultly. 00:04:07.160 --> 00:04:11.830 So what I’m going to do next is to open up one of the side seams on this pant leg, 00:04:11.830 --> 00:04:16.459 just from here to here, because this will give me easy access to the cutout and make 00:04:16.459 --> 00:04:19.290 it about 100 times easier to sew the plastic on. 00:04:19.290 --> 00:04:24.000 When I’d done that, I made sure that the plastic was in place over the cutout, and 00:04:24.000 --> 00:04:28.420 then I pinned it on around the edges, making sure that I’d only pinned it to the front 00:04:28.420 --> 00:04:32.650 layer of the jeans, not the back, and then I sewed the plastic on using a straight stitch 00:04:32.650 --> 00:04:33.650 like this. 00:04:33.650 --> 00:04:37.440 Now, sewing with PVC plastic is a little bit difficult – it kept getting a little bit 00:04:37.440 --> 00:04:41.860 stuck on my sewing machine’s feeding mechanism – but I didn’t need to use any special 00:04:41.860 --> 00:04:46.390 sewing tools or sewing feet, I simply helped feed the fabrics through by pulling on it 00:04:46.390 --> 00:04:49.020 a little bit, using my hands as I sewed. 00:04:49.020 --> 00:04:53.380 Now once that plastic was sewn on around all 4 edges of the cutout, I sewed the side-seams 00:04:53.380 --> 00:04:58.520 of the jeans back up and then I cut off the excess edges around the plastic, leaving about 00:04:58.520 --> 00:05:00.970 half an inch next to the stitches that I just made. 00:05:00.970 --> 00:05:04.890 Finally, I wanted to cover up the edges of the plastic so they wouldn’t dig into my 00:05:04.890 --> 00:05:09.560 legs, so using those denim scraps that I cut out from the knees of these jeans earlier, 00:05:09.560 --> 00:05:14.101 I cut these into strips, brushed some fabric glue on the edges of the plastic, and then 00:05:14.101 --> 00:05:18.870 I placed the strip of fabric down over the plastic edge, covering it entirely. 00:05:18.870 --> 00:05:22.700 And I did this at both the top and the bottom of the cutouts; I didn’t worry about the 00:05:22.700 --> 00:05:26.271 sides because they weren’t ever going to touch my legs, but you could do this if you 00:05:26.271 --> 00:05:27.271 wanted to. 00:05:27.271 --> 00:05:30.360 Finally, remember that cute leg pocket that I cut off before? 00:05:30.360 --> 00:05:34.410 I sewed the top of the pocket back in place – which would have been a lot easier if 00:05:34.410 --> 00:05:39.140 I’d done this before I sewed the side seams back up, but I still managed to sew it on 00:05:39.140 --> 00:05:41.440 using a needle and some thread – and then I was done! 00:05:41.440 --> 00:05:44.180 So, how did it turn out? 00:05:44.180 --> 00:05:45.360 How did I go? 00:05:45.420 --> 00:05:47.720 [Electronic dance music plays] 00:05:59.120 --> 00:06:02.780 Look, I did try really hard to film this seriously for you guys, but… 00:06:02.790 --> 00:06:03.790 [singing]: Boop! 00:06:03.790 --> 00:06:06.780 Boop boop boop boop boop boop boop! [laughs] 00:06:06.780 --> 00:06:09.860 It's so hard to be serious filming these! 00:06:09.860 --> 00:06:12.590 I mean, knees are really weird! 00:06:12.590 --> 00:06:17.400 And they're just - they're just so THERE, like, WHAT ARE THEY DOING THERE?! 00:06:18.520 --> 00:06:19.760 [Whispering]: What are knees? 00:06:19.900 --> 00:06:22.040 Yeah, I think this episode has broken me. 00:06:22.040 --> 00:06:23.040 A little bit. 00:06:23.040 --> 00:06:26.740 It definitely initiated an existential crisis about the meaning of knees. 00:06:26.760 --> 00:06:28.480 [Sound of knees slapping up against the plastic] 00:06:28.480 --> 00:06:33.170 Seriously I’ve looked at my knees so much now, both filming and editing this video, 00:06:33.170 --> 00:06:36.250 that I don’t really feel like they’re a normal body part anymore. 00:06:36.250 --> 00:06:38.660 Alright so – it worked! 00:06:38.660 --> 00:06:39.660 And… 00:06:39.660 --> 00:06:40.830 I have to admit… 00:06:40.830 --> 00:06:43.160 I actually quite like them. 00:06:43.160 --> 00:06:49.430 Sure, there’s some definite cons – the main one being that they’re… really not 00:06:49.430 --> 00:06:50.430 comfortable. 00:06:50.430 --> 00:06:55.560 Whenever I bend my knees – like, every second while I'm walking – my knees bump up against 00:06:55.560 --> 00:06:57.310 and stick to the rigid plastic. 00:06:57.310 --> 00:07:02.530 I am literally sitting like this right now because I don't want the plastic to touch 00:07:02.530 --> 00:07:06.480 my knees! [laughs] Also, on a hot day, your sweaty knees will 00:07:06.480 --> 00:07:10.820 produce a lot of condensation that'll be very visible and show up on these windows. 00:07:10.820 --> 00:07:14.080 I just thought of another one if you're someone who occasionally shaves their legs like I 00:07:14.080 --> 00:07:17.080 do, you can't just forgo shaving in the winter if you're going to wear these! 00:07:17.080 --> 00:07:21.130 Oh, I just thought of another one, if you're pale, like I am, you're going to have to put 00:07:21.130 --> 00:07:24.970 sunscreen on your knees before you go out because this is not UV protective - unless 00:07:24.970 --> 00:07:27.250 you want rectangle burn lines on your legs. 00:07:27.250 --> 00:07:30.650 Man, so many of the clothes I make on Make Thrift Buy give you weird tan lines. 00:07:30.650 --> 00:07:33.860 But there’s some pros, as well, like... 00:07:33.860 --> 00:07:35.140 You can put stickers on them! 00:07:35.140 --> 00:07:36.640 And change the stickers up! 00:07:36.640 --> 00:07:40.120 You can also grab a whiteboard marker and write down things that you have to remember! 00:07:40.120 --> 00:07:42.220 Your knees won't get wet in the rain... 00:07:42.220 --> 00:07:44.230 They're certainly a conversation starter. 00:07:44.230 --> 00:07:46.620 As if someone isn't going to mention these weird-ass jeans. 00:07:46.620 --> 00:07:47.670 Also - fashion. 00:07:47.670 --> 00:07:48.970 I guess that's a pro. 00:07:48.970 --> 00:07:50.080 For some people. 00:07:50.080 --> 00:07:52.140 Anyway, in conclusion, these jeans are a: 00:07:52.140 --> 00:07:53.980 [scissor snipping, zipper sound effect] 00:07:54.020 --> 00:07:56.020 Thrift a pair of jeans, and make these for yourself. 00:07:56.020 --> 00:08:01.330 Mine came in at about $5 total if you include the plastic material and thread I used. 00:08:01.330 --> 00:08:04.830 So I hope this video either helps, or amuses you, and I’ll see you all in my next video. 00:08:04.830 --> 00:08:05.830 Bye! 00:08:05.830 --> 00:08:06.830 Hey! 00:08:06.830 --> 00:08:07.830 Youtube family! 00:08:07.830 --> 00:08:10.310 This is a call-to-action to sign up and donate to my Patreon page! 00:08:10.310 --> 00:08:13.540 If you have ever used one of my sewing tutorials and you’ve made something awesome, consider 00:08:13.540 --> 00:08:18.860 all the money you’ve saved on taking sewing lessons, and on clothing, and consider throwing 00:08:18.860 --> 00:08:20.900 a couple of dollars my way. 00:08:20.900 --> 00:08:25.570 Currently only 0.03% of my Youtube subscribers donate to my Patreon page. 00:08:25.570 --> 00:08:30.840 If just 0.1% of you pledged a dollar per month, it’d really really really help me out! 00:08:30.840 --> 00:08:34.510 I spend like 20-30 hours on each of these videos, so it's something that I put a lot 00:08:34.510 --> 00:08:35.680 of time and effort into. 00:08:35.680 --> 00:08:39.610 So consider signing up – it’s Youtube communites coming together and supporter their 00:08:39.610 --> 00:08:41.820 favourite content creator that keeps us going. 00:08:41.820 --> 00:08:45.370 If you can’t commit to a dollar a month, that’s okay, you can also support me by 00:08:45.370 --> 00:08:50.160 making a one-off purchase on my merchandise page, or, if you absolutely can’t spare 00:08:50.160 --> 00:08:54.230 a dollar a month, then at the very least force all your friends to watch my videos as well. 00:08:54.230 --> 00:08:55.560 Alright, thanks again, I'm going now. 00:08:55.560 --> 00:08:56.160 Bye!
