0:00:03.139,0:00:04.139 Hey! 0:00:04.139,0:00:07.509 Welcome to Make Thrift Buy, the show where[br]YOU send in clothes that you’ve seen online 0:00:07.509,0:00:12.080 – clothes that are either expensive, mass-produced,[br]or the brand just doesn’t make efforts to 0:00:12.080,0:00:15.660 pay their workers a living wage – and then[br]I do my best to recreate them. 0:00:15.660,0:00:19.710 So today I’m doing an item that’s been[br]suggested by … oh… about a BILLION of 0:00:19.710,0:00:20.710 you. 0:00:20.710,0:00:25.019 Coming in at a cool $95 are these pair of[br]mom jeans from Topshop, that feature little 0:00:25.019,0:00:26.019 windows for your knees. 0:00:26.019,0:00:31.199 Assumedly the windows are there so that your[br]knees can gaze out upon the world, no longer 0:00:31.199,0:00:33.650 constricted by cruel, opaque fabrics. 0:00:33.650,0:00:34.650 #freetheknee 0:00:34.650,0:00:39.370 Anyway – the internet has been divided by[br]these jeans and my social media has been flooded 0:00:39.370,0:00:44.410 with requests asking me to try and recreate[br]them, so I’m basically just doing them so 0:00:44.410,0:00:49.379 I can go back on my twitter account without[br]having to scroll through pages and pages of 0:00:49.379,0:00:50.520 these damn jeans. 0:00:50.520,0:00:52.040 So let’s get started. 0:00:52.040,0:00:53.040 *** 0:00:53.040,0:00:56.640 So I took myself to the thrift store – I[br]went to a warehouse sized-one that I know 0:00:56.640,0:01:01.090 has a lot of pairs of jeans – and the quest[br]for a suitable pair of mom jeans commenced. 0:01:01.090,0:01:06.190 After trying on like 30 different pairs of[br]jeans – I finally found my perfect pair 0:01:06.190,0:01:07.420 of mom jeans. 0:01:07.420,0:01:10.920 They fit snugly on the waist but they are[br]nice and loose on the legs. 0:01:10.920,0:01:14.869 The main thing you want to look for in any[br]pair of jeans you’re using for this project, 0:01:14.869,0:01:18.000 is that it should have lots of loose fabric[br]around the knee. 0:01:18.000,0:01:20.960 This project won’t really work with tight-fitting[br]jeans. 0:01:20.960,0:01:25.220 So while wearing the jeans, I grabbed some[br]chalk and I roughly measured out where I wanted 0:01:25.220,0:01:27.550 the top and the bottom of the cutouts to be. 0:01:27.550,0:01:31.189 As you can see, I’m bending my leg a lot[br]in this process, that’s because I wanted 0:01:31.189,0:01:34.369 to make sure my knees would be around the[br]middle of the cutout. 0:01:34.369,0:01:37.829 If you measure only while your legs are straight[br]you’ll probably make the cutouts a little 0:01:37.829,0:01:39.090 bit too high. 0:01:39.090,0:01:43.479 These jeans also had a really cute pocket[br]on the side down here, but unfortunately it’s 0:01:43.479,0:01:47.259 in the way of the cutouts, so I had to remove[br]the top part of the pocket just to make life 0:01:47.259,0:01:48.259 easier. 0:01:48.259,0:01:51.930 Then, I laid the jeans out flat on my table,[br]and I made the chalk lines thicker and I also 0:01:51.930,0:01:56.770 made sure they were even on both legs and[br]the same height as each other by using a ruler. 0:01:56.770,0:02:00.970 I then made small chalk marks exactly in the[br]centre of the pant legs, by measuring the 0:02:00.970,0:02:05.850 width of the pant leg and dividing this by[br]2, and then I drew on rectangles that were 0:02:05.850,0:02:07.930 4 and a half by 7 inches. 0:02:07.930,0:02:12.090 Of course, the length of your rectangles might[br]differ slightly depending on where you drew 0:02:12.090,0:02:16.290 your first chalk marks but this is a good[br]ball-park measurement of the size that your 0:02:16.290,0:02:17.430 cutouts should be. 0:02:17.430,0:02:21.879 Then using a pair of fabric scissors I chopped[br]out the fabric inside the rectangles. 0:02:21.879,0:02:27.010 Then at the corner of each rectangle, I made[br]small slits like this at 45 degrees, each 0:02:27.010,0:02:28.200 about half an inch long. 0:02:30.560,0:02:35.120 Then, I turned my jeans INSIDE OUT, make sure[br]you turn them inside out before this next 0:02:35.120,0:02:37.860 step, and I folded the edges of the cutouts[br]back like this. 0:02:37.860,0:02:42.209 Now, we’re going to sew these pieces down,[br]using some thread in a matching colour to 0:02:42.209,0:02:43.340 the jeans. 0:02:43.340,0:02:46.901 Now you can hand-stitch this, but if you’re[br]doing this on a sewing machine, you’ll need 0:02:46.901,0:02:51.000 to do some clever folding so that you don’t[br]sew through the back of the jeans as well. 0:02:51.000,0:02:54.910 So, I manipulated my jeans like this, to make[br]sure that I’d only be sewing through the 0:02:54.910,0:02:58.520 FRONT fabric of the jeans, and then I sewed[br]down this edge using a straight stitch and 0:02:58.580,0:03:00.460 a normal sewing needle. 0:03:02.840,0:03:06.180 And I repeated this for all of the raw edges[br]around the cutouts. 0:03:06.180,0:03:11.280 Annnnd don’t goof up and sew one of these[br]flaps on the wrong way like I did here – I 0:03:11.280,0:03:15.150 accidentally sewed this flap to the right[br]side of the jeans, and didn’t notice that 0:03:15.150,0:03:19.760 I'd done this until after I’d sewn on the[br]plastic – and I spent a lot of time unpicking 0:03:19.760,0:03:20.760 my stitches. 0:03:20.760,0:03:21.790 Don't do this! 0:03:21.790,0:03:24.310 ANYWAY, next I grabbed my plastic material. 0:03:24.310,0:03:29.390 This is flexible PVC plastic that I had remaining[br]from this plastic skirt that you guys got 0:03:29.390,0:03:34.579 me to make back in episode #33 – I think[br]it was originally meant to be a table protector? 0:03:34.579,0:03:39.189 – and I laid it on top of one of my cutouts,[br]and then I drew out a rectangle shape directly 0:03:39.189,0:03:43.000 onto the plastic, making the rectangle slightly[br]larger than the cutout. 0:03:43.000,0:03:44.000 And… 0:03:44.000,0:03:47.790 damn, I accidentally drew onto my fabric here,[br]luckily the jeans are still inside out so 0:03:47.790,0:03:49.110 it doesn’t really matter! 0:03:49.110,0:03:53.080 Anyway I finished drawing on that rectangle[br]and then I cut it out. 0:03:53.080,0:03:57.530 Now actually sewing the plastic onto the inside[br]of the cutouts is a little bit tricky and 0:03:57.530,0:04:02.000 took me a while to work out, because there’s[br]a lot of fabric that you DON’T want to sew 0:04:02.000,0:04:03.260 through in the way! 0:04:03.260,0:04:07.160 If you just put this straight on your sewing[br]machine now you will have a lot of difficultly. 0:04:07.160,0:04:11.830 So what I’m going to do next is to open[br]up one of the side seams on this pant leg, 0:04:11.830,0:04:16.459 just from here to here, because this will[br]give me easy access to the cutout and make 0:04:16.459,0:04:19.290 it about 100 times easier to sew the plastic[br]on. 0:04:19.290,0:04:24.000 When I’d done that, I made sure that the[br]plastic was in place over the cutout, and 0:04:24.000,0:04:28.420 then I pinned it on around the edges, making[br]sure that I’d only pinned it to the front 0:04:28.420,0:04:32.650 layer of the jeans, not the back, and then[br]I sewed the plastic on using a straight stitch 0:04:32.650,0:04:33.650 like this. 0:04:33.650,0:04:37.440 Now, sewing with PVC plastic is a little bit[br]difficult – it kept getting a little bit 0:04:37.440,0:04:41.860 stuck on my sewing machine’s feeding mechanism[br]– but I didn’t need to use any special 0:04:41.860,0:04:46.390 sewing tools or sewing feet, I simply helped[br]feed the fabrics through by pulling on it 0:04:46.390,0:04:49.020 a little bit, using my hands as I sewed. 0:04:49.020,0:04:53.380 Now once that plastic was sewn on around all[br]4 edges of the cutout, I sewed the side-seams 0:04:53.380,0:04:58.520 of the jeans back up and then I cut off the[br]excess edges around the plastic, leaving about 0:04:58.520,0:05:00.970 half an inch next to the stitches that I just[br]made. 0:05:00.970,0:05:04.890 Finally, I wanted to cover up the edges of[br]the plastic so they wouldn’t dig into my 0:05:04.890,0:05:09.560 legs, so using those denim scraps that I cut[br]out from the knees of these jeans earlier, 0:05:09.560,0:05:14.101 I cut these into strips, brushed some fabric[br]glue on the edges of the plastic, and then 0:05:14.101,0:05:18.870 I placed the strip of fabric down over the[br]plastic edge, covering it entirely. 0:05:18.870,0:05:22.700 And I did this at both the top and the bottom[br]of the cutouts; I didn’t worry about the 0:05:22.700,0:05:26.271 sides because they weren’t ever going to[br]touch my legs, but you could do this if you 0:05:26.271,0:05:27.271 wanted to. 0:05:27.271,0:05:30.360 Finally, remember that cute leg pocket that[br]I cut off before? 0:05:30.360,0:05:34.410 I sewed the top of the pocket back in place[br]– which would have been a lot easier if 0:05:34.410,0:05:39.140 I’d done this before I sewed the side seams[br]back up, but I still managed to sew it on 0:05:39.140,0:05:41.440 using a needle and some thread – and then[br]I was done! 0:05:41.440,0:05:44.180 So, how did it turn out? 0:05:44.180,0:05:45.360 How did I go? 0:05:45.420,0:05:47.720 [Electronic dance music plays] 0:05:59.120,0:06:02.780 Look, I did try really hard to film this seriously[br]for you guys, but… 0:06:02.790,0:06:03.790 [singing]: Boop! 0:06:03.790,0:06:06.780 Boop boop boop boop boop boop boop![br][laughs] 0:06:06.780,0:06:09.860 It's so hard to be serious filming these! 0:06:09.860,0:06:12.590 I mean, knees are really weird! 0:06:12.590,0:06:17.400 And they're just - they're just so THERE,[br]like, WHAT ARE THEY DOING THERE?! 0:06:18.520,0:06:19.760 [Whispering]: What are knees? 0:06:19.900,0:06:22.040 Yeah, I think this episode has broken me. 0:06:22.040,0:06:23.040 A little bit. 0:06:23.040,0:06:26.740 It definitely initiated an existential crisis[br]about the meaning of knees. 0:06:26.760,0:06:28.480 [Sound of knees slapping up against the plastic] 0:06:28.480,0:06:33.170 Seriously I’ve looked at my knees so much[br]now, both filming and editing this video, 0:06:33.170,0:06:36.250 that I don’t really feel like they’re[br]a normal body part anymore. 0:06:36.250,0:06:38.660 Alright so – it worked! 0:06:38.660,0:06:39.660 And… 0:06:39.660,0:06:40.830 I have to admit… 0:06:40.830,0:06:43.160 I actually quite like them. 0:06:43.160,0:06:49.430 Sure, there’s some definite cons – the[br]main one being that they’re… really not 0:06:49.430,0:06:50.430 comfortable. 0:06:50.430,0:06:55.560 Whenever I bend my knees – like, every second[br]while I'm walking – my knees bump up against 0:06:55.560,0:06:57.310 and stick to the rigid plastic. 0:06:57.310,0:07:02.530 I am literally sitting like this right now[br]because I don't want the plastic to touch 0:07:02.530,0:07:06.480 my knees! [laughs][br]Also, on a hot day, your sweaty knees will 0:07:06.480,0:07:10.820 produce a lot of condensation that'll be very[br]visible and show up on these windows. 0:07:10.820,0:07:14.080 I just thought of another one if you're someone[br]who occasionally shaves their legs like I 0:07:14.080,0:07:17.080 do, you can't just forgo shaving in the winter[br]if you're going to wear these! 0:07:17.080,0:07:21.130 Oh, I just thought of another one, if you're[br]pale, like I am, you're going to have to put 0:07:21.130,0:07:24.970 sunscreen on your knees before you go out[br]because this is not UV protective - unless 0:07:24.970,0:07:27.250 you want rectangle burn lines on your legs. 0:07:27.250,0:07:30.650 Man, so many of the clothes I make on Make[br]Thrift Buy give you weird tan lines. 0:07:30.650,0:07:33.860 But there’s some pros, as well, like... 0:07:33.860,0:07:35.140 You can put stickers on them! 0:07:35.140,0:07:36.640 And change the stickers up! 0:07:36.640,0:07:40.120 You can also grab a whiteboard marker and[br]write down things that you have to remember! 0:07:40.120,0:07:42.220 Your knees won't get wet in the rain... 0:07:42.220,0:07:44.230 They're certainly a conversation starter. 0:07:44.230,0:07:46.620 As if someone isn't going to mention these[br]weird-ass jeans. 0:07:46.620,0:07:47.670 Also - fashion. 0:07:47.670,0:07:48.970 I guess that's a pro. 0:07:48.970,0:07:50.080 For some people. 0:07:50.080,0:07:52.140 Anyway, in conclusion, these jeans are a: 0:07:52.140,0:07:53.980 [scissor snipping, zipper sound effect] 0:07:54.020,0:07:56.020 Thrift a pair of jeans, and make these for[br]yourself. 0:07:56.020,0:08:01.330 Mine came in at about $5 total if you include[br]the plastic material and thread I used. 0:08:01.330,0:08:04.830 So I hope this video either helps, or amuses[br]you, and I’ll see you all in my next video. 0:08:04.830,0:08:05.830 Bye! 0:08:05.830,0:08:06.830 Hey! 0:08:06.830,0:08:07.830 Youtube family! 0:08:07.830,0:08:10.310 This is a call-to-action to sign up and donate[br]to my Patreon page! 0:08:10.310,0:08:13.540 If you have ever used one of my sewing tutorials[br]and you’ve made something awesome, consider 0:08:13.540,0:08:18.860 all the money you’ve saved on taking sewing[br]lessons, and on clothing, and consider throwing 0:08:18.860,0:08:20.900 a couple of dollars my way. 0:08:20.900,0:08:25.570 Currently only 0.03% of my Youtube subscribers[br]donate to my Patreon page. 0:08:25.570,0:08:30.840 If just 0.1% of you pledged a dollar per month,[br]it’d really really really help me out! 0:08:30.840,0:08:34.510 I spend like 20-30 hours on each of these[br]videos, so it's something that I put a lot 0:08:34.510,0:08:35.680 of time and effort into. 0:08:35.680,0:08:39.610 So consider signing up – it’s Youtube[br]communites coming together and supporter their 0:08:39.610,0:08:41.820 favourite content creator that keeps us going. 0:08:41.820,0:08:45.370 If you can’t commit to a dollar a month,[br]that’s okay, you can also support me by 0:08:45.370,0:08:50.160 making a one-off purchase on my merchandise[br]page, or, if you absolutely can’t spare 0:08:50.160,0:08:54.230 a dollar a month, then at the very least force[br]all your friends to watch my videos as well. 0:08:54.230,0:08:55.560 Alright, thanks again, I'm going now. 0:08:55.560,0:08:56.160 Bye!
